The Shangri-Las were the best at doing tear-jerkers. They managed to make hits of three of them ("Leader Of The Pack" and "I Can Never Go Home Anymore"), whereas with most other artists follow-up TJ records seemed contrived. I think one reason it worked for the Shangri-Las was that they had just the right touch of parody as well as pathos in the songs.

Ray was a much better singer than the Shangri-Las' singers, but I think that his interpretation of this song was awful. The Shangri-Las interpretation of this song is much better.
