@fightluv I trained in many things, ITF (pre sine wave), Goju Ryu, Boxing, Judo. You know our little debate was not intended to offend. I just wanted to know if the sine was actually implemented in application. YOu answered my question. Good luck on your fourth dan test.
@fightluv Ok I take back my wish for you to do well on your 4th dan test. You practiced for years and you as well as practicioners of your art will lose to fighters of other styles. Have you ever practiced against other styles? Most likely not. All you can actually do is sling insults. Go test your test your skills. It is the fighter who makes styles, and you are not that fighter.
@fightluv Don't try to insult me. Tae Kwon Do's sine wave is a silly concept. It will not work against other arts. As far as sparring goes, in TKD there is no sine wave. You people just mindlessly obey General Choi. I don't want to disrespect the man. But he realized that his art was influenced by the Japanese, and he needed to do something to mitigate this fact, and the sine wave is born. Check out what happen to TKD ITF and WTf people they fight other arts. They lose.
@fightluv They must be just giving away those dan rankings. Everybody in the martial arts community looks down on Tae Kwon Do, ITF and WTF. ITF spends too much time doing forms, and that little tap sparring. WTF spends too much time doing that point sparring. Tae Kwon Do sucks, but it does not have to, if more time was spent applying the basics, it would be a good art. And stop that damn sine wave.
The sine wave. It may add power, but it is slow. In my opinion it is also an unatural movement. People always talk scientific about martial arts, but science has shown that for there to be power in a strike, there must be a chain. Foot up to the fist. I would not want to sacrifice my balance doing the sine wave. People have been punching and doing destruction without the sine wave.
Why shouldn't one twist their hip to perform sine wave? If you understand 'sine wave' scientifically, you should understand that you would naturally perform the oscillation when you drop your weight and throw a punch or kick. It's nature.
Y Yul Guk was a patriot of korea. This looks like small segments of Yul Guk. The General was trying to help student to better his punch and include sine wave in his movements.
maybe from practical point of view however, practising patterns is a form of sparring practice. If we can easily move between low, rigid stances in ways which the body doesn't naturally move, then it becomes easier for us to generate power and increase manouverability in natural stances.
patterns have zero to do with sparring ability. The only value they have is preserving the art and passing gradings.Without patterns tkd would just be a watered down version of kickboxing as the more lethal techs are banned in sparring
Im not saying patterns are a way of measuring or bettering sparring ability, however they do allow you to practice using muscles that perhaps wouldn't normally be used and as a result, it is easier to perform kicks with speed and power (in theory). I agree that perhaps sine wave is not the best power generating motion but i do not disregard its use as i have tried using it and with certain movements, it does work. I beleive that Hip twist with a tiny sine wave motion to be best.
you said it was a form of sparring practice. If you want to get better at a technique you need to hit something not fresh air, also patterns dont alow for enough repetition of technique to be of any use.Your argument re using different muscles is illogical.Sine wave and patterns are ill conceived methods of practise with no application whatsoever
I see your point. When i said sparring practice i didn't mean its a way of practising fighting. I also agree with you that to get better at applying a technique, you must practice it realistically towards objects. As for my arguement being illogical; i still disagree to an extent. When stretching, we allow for a wider range oif motion. From flexibility comes some form of speed due to movements becoming easier. My arguement is a little like this. If we practise movements in unnatural positions...
.....and body movements, then our range of motion etc becomes easier and our body can move much easier (perhaps not in all cases) in more natural ways. Patterns perhaps do not allow for enough repetition for technique but if practise is confined to just the Dojang, then many benefits of much epetition is lost. I do see your point and it is valid. It's good to be able to have debates about Martial Arts and training methods with someone such as yourself.
pattern doesnt mean everything about that art, it is just a part of that martial art practice, it really depends on whether u appreciate the art or not, if you dont appreciate it of course u say that is useless, it means everything for the person who appreciate it.
That's not true. Tae kwon do at least as taught in the ITF is not a sport it's a self defence art. There are many techniques which are lethal that are taught including eye gouges and neck strikes etc. How exactly do you propose that one practises lethal techniques? Ancient Samurai doing jiu jitsu used to practice on condemned prisoners that obviously can't be done now. Can you name an art where lethal techniques are practiced for real? What you on about!?
You can twist your hip - if that is what your particular MA style teaches. In this style (ITF) a new way of delivering power is to using a Sine Wave motion. Without meaning to condescend, your statement that hip twisting creates more power is not really based on actual proof. Also you are assuming that power is the main aim of technique, but what about other concepts such as economy of motion, balance and control, maintaining 'natural motion'?
works for me! where n who would the people on video be?

unlike karate, twisting the hip is prohibited, replaced by sine wave..this is why tkd is not karate or any other style..

the sine wave as taught by gen choi is rubbish from a practical point of view,a complete waste of training time instilling an unnatural motion.
