Would love to have worked at Salvation but did not want the commute from Boca.
I usually worked beside Lynne at Backstreet and at the Copa I was always at the first bar on the left as you walked in. Remeber Tiny Tina (Ray) and Dana Manchester?(John)
@gonzodriver Who could ever forget Tiny Tina? Not just the fact that he was big, but he had presence, which too few people have today. Tiny Tina was a true professional and a very fine person. Also, its very rare that a cover is better than the original.
If this cover horrifies U so much then you'd die if you heard the 'Stars on 54 - Ultra Nate' version.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
This version is almost as bad as Barbra Streisand's, both this idiot & Barbara should have been put to death at the end of the 70's. Gordon's version is epic & moving, this is big stinkin' pile of disco poop.
I always loved Viola Wills!! awesome voice!!!I Have her greatest hits!!!! Great disco!!! I remember listening to Disco 93 BOSs and Kiss 108 fm in Boston!!!!
As a 24 yr. old I am discusted by my generation's confidence lacking music. I have rejected mostly any music from the 90's and 2000's... I like to be motivated by music. I love disco.
bitter alert. continue to watch and comment on a video you clearly have no connection to, other than to spew childish rhetoric...this reply is for PROMISCUOUS
I would rather be frozen in time then listen to your so called rap, and watch your no talent people grab their nuts when the sing and wear your pants around your ass, hats on sideways and cant speak a proer word of English and see your draws...In our era, we knew how to dress with class and style.
know wha Ima seyin.about dat.....thats your ignorant language.
ditto mike76, PROMISCUOUS is devoid of any logic when it comes to this genre, PROMISCUOUS is from a country that still worships kings and queens, and whos latest export is "david and victoria beckham" 2 over exposed overrated britiots who have all the sex appeal and talent of "barbi and ken", and has the nerve to post there are "hundreds of brilliant aritsts and bands" from the land of UNKNOWN, whos area size is roughly equivalent to 2 of our states...i didnt get that memo, did you mike76?
thanx mike76, i cant stand people who think they know what they are talking about. meanwhile they were just a glimmer in their parents eyes at the time. they are a typical product of their generation. how sad
Asides from a woeful taste in music, a need to have the upper hand in arguments and to be in the right, you can now can add xenophobia to your list of crimes. You have shown with your attack how uneducated in music you are! The UK is responsible for hundreds of brilliant artists and bands.
i will reiterate this one more time, i will not debate someone who wasnt born when this genre was at its peak. your both newbies, go play with someone your own age. im not playin with children who clearly have no clue to what they are talking about. your both dismissed.
For a forty-six year old, your prattle in relation to your age is far more childish than mine. The fact that you even replied to this contradicts the very message that you sent....
you said something i agree with, yes your "prattle" is far more childish than mine, and u can also add IQ to that equation as well, you can say what u want about an era you cleary have no connection to, therefore, your comments have "ZERO" credibility here, not to mention that you also are clearly in the minority, you and your stupid, clueless, ignorant, someewhat racist counterpart catherinstupidspark. whether or not im stuck in era has no relevance as far as your concerned,......
...Go and do something useful; the reason the disco era is no longer raging is clearly that it attempted to crush the originality and diversity from every other good song of every other genre and turn it into factory produced disco-fodder. The disco age may have been great, but you have clearly been frozen in time. You're fired.
bottom line, you were not there, you didnt experience it, period. thats too bad on your part. why dont ou go find another clueless 21 year old who feels the same way about a genre of music that clearly has had impact that was far greater than any other genre, but u wouldnt know that, you born in the height of the "aids" epidemic, now get lost, ive made you look pretty stupid already, or should i say,you made yourself look pretty stupid..newbie
how could someone your age comment on a song that was popular before u were even born? regardless of its genre interpetation. you had to have been part of the disco generation to fully understand its meaning, you were not, therefore your opinions are not only stupid, close minded, but baseless. this is a brilliant disco version, of a brilliant song....go listen to your mindless, non-melodic, repetitive hip/hop, since thats the music that defines your pathetic generation....what a waste.
I have heard enough disco, been to enough disco events, seen enough about the age to comment. I think what we have here is a basic personality clash and we would both do well to leave each other to our own opinions, however deluded they are in your case or mine. There is no point in excluding people -you are not special or more qualified by being part of a 'disco age'. Anyway it's all opinion anyway, so there is no right or wrong. I would say the same back to you and not be wrong therefore.
im not going to debate someone about a genre that was at its peak before they were even born, hearing it, and "been to disco events" is a far cry from actually being there when the genre was at its peak. disco was a product of the time, it was a product of the sexual revolution, it was a freedom cry for gays and blacks, it was a revolt against the political upheaval and disillusionment of our world and our government. right after nixons involvment with watergate was announced people....contin
were tired of the bullshit, and everyone needed to lighten up...im not talking "bee gees" "donna summer", im talking a sub culture of disco that u had to experience to understand what im talking about, but your a newbie, you dont get it, you never will.
As a matter of fact I wrote this with a person who is much older than me - who agreed with me and has lived through the disco period. He was glad when it was over, and I am glad I never had to endure what he clearly did. Being tired of bad music and needing to lighten up is all very well, but I know plenty of uplifting and upbeat songs that actually retain their soul. If they wanted to have upbeat disco songs they should have written their own, not ruined another one that also solved a...
...very real and sensitive purpose for many people. ANd that does not make them soppy, it makes them intelligent - those same people probably loved the disco era as well, but they kept downbeat songs to serve certain purposes and upbeat songs to seve other purposes. You also seem to be confusing hippies with the disco period. Hippies listened to rock, not disco. You don't get That, and never will, so we should leave it there.
I'm not an idiot. I just have a wider taste in music than you. Too bad you can't think of an adequate response anymore. So last real impression is left by me as a result.
the only last real impression you left, is what a close minded idiot you are, your responses do not merit an adequate, or for that matter, an intelligent response. your a product of your sad generation, you live in a country "UK" or better known as "unknown" whos contribution to the music industry in your 19 years is "the spice girls" and "boy george"....need i say more..
Do I have to name them all for you, or shall I take it as read that you are cosy to sit in America shutting out the rest of the world and disagreeing with everyone who isn't yourself? In your next attack, please choose an alternative term of abuse to "idiot" as this is wearing on me. Also bear in mind your last few responses were riddled with poor grammar and clumsy syntax mistakes. You are in no position to compare yourself to me intellectually.
if this were a video discussion about grammar and syntax you would have gotten a gold star, but its not, and you wont.... ah, to be 21 and intellectually inferior, those were the days!!!!
I concede. You are a towering giant of knowledge and erudition. I bow to your incredibly astute comments and opinions on music. Did you used to write for Rolling Stone? Jeez... you sure are one mighty smart person. My name is PUMICEOUS by the way... although your pun was incredibly clever. I still hate this song though. MIKE761CPU... I only have two words for you: "stop commenting."
I just want to point out - perhaps the disco era has some incredible, great songs that lift peoples' lives; I wasn't there and I'm not a fan, so I don't know - I just don't think THIS song was right for disco. It's too sensitive and too well done in the original. Nothing inferior about that, and nothing wrong with thinking that. On that slightly more amiable note, we close.
thats correct, catherine, there is nothing wrong with not liking something, thats your free will, but comments like " a curse on all those who enjoy this" is inflammatory to say the least, especially when its from a 19 year old, i would have let it go had you been my age or older, because that way, you would have some credibility to back your statement, those were the best times for many people, the world was a whole lot simpler then, people respected each other, unlike today for sure....
Fair enough - I have had my taking down, but remember being 19 I still have maturing to do - also, age may be a factor, but not the only thing to judge by. Still, I wasn't there as you say. I suppose the curse thing was a bit much - I wouldn't have fought so hard over it if I hadn't thought YOU were some sort of judgemental, aggressive person,
catherine, thats sort of ironic because thats exactly what i thought you were doing, being judgemental that is, i mean lets be truthful here, everyone to a certain extent is judgemental, thats not necessarily a bad thing, as long as its not your way of life..
but you are not nearly the one minded, narrow and abusive person I thought you were, although you are certainly not infinitely wise. But then, neither am I. I still think this particular song is kind of ruined in its message and emotion by turning it into disco, but apologise for my inflammatory way of putting it across. What do you think of Cascada, by the way?
catherine, ive never thought of myself as "one-minded", however, i also never thought of myself as "infinitely wise" either, but when it comes to this genre, im quite well versed, you dont like this version, fine, but disco was meant to be happy uplifting music, thats all, whats wrong with that? the producers took a relatively dark song and brought a "happiness" twist to it, and exposed it to a whole new generation(at the time) is that a crime?
that was one of the great things about disco, it could take the saddest most depressing song, and make it seem "happy", did i like every disco song? hell no!! there was a fair amount of cheese in this genre as well.
i would imagine that you probably would have supported the anti-disco rally back in july 1979, held at cominskey park. due to discos immense popularity, rockers revolted and burned disco records at half time, i thought it was kind of racist, since most disco artists were black... i will get back to u on cascada, however, i will warn you, you may not like my assessment of her, since i find most of todays music and its artists to be quite generic..i hope the air is clearer now..
Looking at it like that - taking sad songs and turning them into happier ones, that seems like a hopeful outlook, which has to be a good thing. I now wish I did like this version more(!)
I suppose for songs like this I would support a medium of hope with a tinge of sadness, which I'm not sure the disco does for me, though I don't think I would be out there protesting aganist disco - it's not personally my type, but it's not 'bad' music. I didn't mean you were one minded necessarily, just that I thought that at the time. I can also see now and accept that you know the original, which is a great interest and relief.
I guess the image of 'cheese' in a fair amount as you say has tainted disco to some degree, in peoples' minds now - so being open minded would be important. The air is much clearer now, and don't worry; if I don't like your assesment of her, we're even, as you disliked my initial assessment of this.
Also, given that pumicious helped write the comment, and he is aware of the inflammatory nature of that particular part of it as well, can you give him a little benefit of the doubt and ease off on him as well? Thanks...
thats correct pumy, you will never acquire the knowelage i have when it comes to this genre, i was part of it, you werent, if you knew about music you would have known that no musical idiom ever "dies" it morphs into something else, the word "disco" died, the music didnt, disco became "dance" at or around 1982, the music became what it is today, "dance music". instead of pinpointing grammatical errors which clearly shows your age, maybe you should take music 101.
@discoguy79 actually disco became high energy first after that phase it was called dance music and has so many offshoots now I don't care to name all of them.
I remember this version. Viola Wills. My mother had that album someplace. I have to find it...
By the way, didn't Viola Wills resembled a very young Wanda Sykes? Maybe it is just me, but, boy, did she look exactly like her. It's like Wanda want solo before comedy. Anyway, still a great song.
Aside from Gordy's, this is a great great song; she makes it her own, and it even transcends disco. Somehow, though, this lip sync of this is just all wrong, ditto the clapping along. I always pictured her sitting and singing this, very demurely and aching. But thanks for posting anyway. (And what happened to Rex Smith??!!)
After Gordon Lightfoot's original, hers is the next best version so far. Sinatra COULD have done THE best version of it, but he never really understood it and gave up on it.
Naked women dancing in the video..why that?J.Cash is close to death and it seems, he´s singing to his 1st wife, apologize for the pain he caused..and now there are women, almost naked, dancing...can´t understand that!
I love this version and I love Gordon Lightfoot's as well. We're in this world together. The world's inhabitants are like a prism through which light flows giving rise to the beauty and diversity within all of us. Right on! Girl!
Hey- at 50 I remember both versions....of course GL's is the one- but Miss Viola took it to a fabulous Disco place...why not enjoy both(plus the later Beyonce version), after all those are some of the best pop lyrics of all time.....Just sayin....
I don't even know if she still alive, hey do you know who I saw yesterday on my way home from work? Remember Gabriela 'Gabby'? I was right next to her but I guess she didn't recognize me. It's been a long time, I just looked at her and smiled. She was so busy with what looked like her kids. She still lives in the same place down in Summit Avenue. I'm glad she still alive. Remember her "muffins"!!! LOL!!! ;-)
I will never forget those days of the 80s and the dance, drink and be merry. None any better!

This version is almost as bad as Barbra Streisand's, both this idiot & Barbara should have been put to death at the end of the 70's. Gordon's version is epic & moving, this is big stinkin' pile of disco poop.

I would rather be frozen in time then listen to your so called rap, and watch your no talent people grab their nuts when the sing and wear your pants around your ass, hats on sideways and cant speak a proer word of English and see your draws...In our era, we knew how to dress with class and style.

MIKE761CPU 3 years ago
ditto mike76, PROMISCUOUS is devoid of any logic when it comes to this genre, PROMISCUOUS is from a country that still worships kings and queens, and whos latest export is "david and victoria beckham" 2 over exposed overrated britiots who have all the sex appeal and talent of "barbi and ken", and has the nerve to post there are "hundreds of brilliant aritsts and bands" from the land of UNKNOWN, whos area size is roughly equivalent to 2 of our states...i didnt get that memo, did you mike76?

i will reiterate this one more time, i will not debate someone who wasnt born when this genre was at its peak. your both newbies, go play with someone your own age. im not playin with children who clearly have no clue to what they are talking about. your both dismissed.

Pumiceous 3 years ago
you said something i agree with, yes your "prattle" is far more childish than mine, and u can also add IQ to that equation as well, you can say what u want about an era you cleary have no connection to, therefore, your comments have "ZERO" credibility here, not to mention that you also are clearly in the minority, you and your stupid, clueless, ignorant, someewhat racist counterpart catherinstupidspark. whether or not im stuck in era has no relevance as far as your concerned,......
discoguy79 3 years ago
...Go and do something useful; the reason the disco era is no longer raging is clearly that it attempted to crush the originality and diversity from every other good song of every other genre and turn it into factory produced disco-fodder. The disco age may have been great, but you have clearly been frozen in time. You're fired.
Pumiceous 3 years ago
bottom line, you were not there, you didnt experience it, period. thats too bad on your part. why dont ou go find another clueless 21 year old who feels the same way about a genre of music that clearly has had impact that was far greater than any other genre, but u wouldnt know that, you born in the height of the "aids" epidemic, now get lost, ive made you look pretty stupid already, or should i say,you made yourself look pretty stupid..newbie

this version beats the remake from the movie "studio 54" a few years ago, i think it was amber, ultra nate, and someone else, i never liked it.
discoguy79 4 years ago
how could someone your age comment on a song that was popular before u were even born? regardless of its genre interpetation. you had to have been part of the disco generation to fully understand its meaning, you were not, therefore your opinions are not only stupid, close minded, but baseless. this is a brilliant disco version, of a brilliant song....go listen to your mindless, non-melodic, repetitive hip/hop, since thats the music that defines your pathetic generation....what a waste.
discoguy79 4 years ago
I have heard enough disco, been to enough disco events, seen enough about the age to comment. I think what we have here is a basic personality clash and we would both do well to leave each other to our own opinions, however deluded they are in your case or mine. There is no point in excluding people -you are not special or more qualified by being part of a 'disco age'. Anyway it's all opinion anyway, so there is no right or wrong. I would say the same back to you and not be wrong therefore.
catherinespark 4 years ago
im not going to debate someone about a genre that was at its peak before they were even born, hearing it, and "been to disco events" is a far cry from actually being there when the genre was at its peak. disco was a product of the time, it was a product of the sexual revolution, it was a freedom cry for gays and blacks, it was a revolt against the political upheaval and disillusionment of our world and our government. right after nixons involvment with watergate was announced people....contin

discoguy79 4 years ago
As a matter of fact I wrote this with a person who is much older than me - who agreed with me and has lived through the disco period. He was glad when it was over, and I am glad I never had to endure what he clearly did. Being tired of bad music and needing to lighten up is all very well, but I know plenty of uplifting and upbeat songs that actually retain their soul. If they wanted to have upbeat disco songs they should have written their own, not ruined another one that also solved a...
catherinespark 3 years ago
...very real and sensitive purpose for many people. You don't get That, and never will, so we should leave it there.
catherinespark 3 years ago
thats the most ridiculous response ive ever heard, your an idiot. lets just leave it at that.
discoguy79 3 years ago
I'm not an idiot. I just have a wider taste in music than you. Too bad you can't think of an adequate response anymore. So last real impression is left by me as a result.
catherinespark 3 years ago
the only last real impression you left, is what a close minded idiot you are, your responses do not merit an adequate, or for that matter, an intelligent response. your a product of your sad generation, you live in a country "UK" or better known as "unknown" whos contribution to the music industry in your 19 years is "the spice girls" and "boy george"....need i say more..
discoguy79 3 years ago
Do I have to name them all for you, or shall I take it as read that you are cosy to sit in America shutting out the rest of the world and disagreeing with everyone who isn't yourself? In your next attack, please choose an alternative term of abuse to "idiot" as this is wearing on me. Also bear in mind your last few responses were riddled with poor grammar and clumsy syntax mistakes. You are in no position to compare yourself to me intellectually.
Pumiceous 3 years ago
if this were a video discussion about grammar and syntax you would have gotten a gold star, but its not, and you wont.... ah, to be 21 and intellectually inferior, those were the days!!!!
discoguy79 3 years ago
Pumiceous 3 years ago
I just want to point out - perhaps the disco era has some incredible, great songs that lift peoples' lives; I wasn't there and I'm not a fan, so I don't know - I just don't think THIS song was right for disco. It's too sensitive and too well done in the original. Nothing inferior about that, and nothing wrong with thinking that. On that slightly more amiable note, we close.
catherinespark 3 years ago
thats correct, catherine, there is nothing wrong with not liking something, thats your free will, but comments like " a curse on all those who enjoy this" is inflammatory to say the least, especially when its from a 19 year old, i would have let it go had you been my age or older, because that way, you would have some credibility to back your statement, those were the best times for many people, the world was a whole lot simpler then, people respected each other, unlike today for sure....
discoguy79 3 years ago
Fair enough - I have had my taking down, but remember being 19 I still have maturing to do - also, age may be a factor, but not the only thing to judge by. Still, I wasn't there as you say. I suppose the curse thing was a bit much - I wouldn't have fought so hard over it if I hadn't thought YOU were some sort of judgemental, aggressive person,
catherinespark 3 years ago
catherine, thats sort of ironic because thats exactly what i thought you were doing, being judgemental that is, i mean lets be truthful here, everyone to a certain extent is judgemental, thats not necessarily a bad thing, as long as its not your way of life..
discoguy79 3 years ago
but you are not nearly the one minded, narrow and abusive person I thought you were, although you are certainly not infinitely wise. But then, neither am I. I still think this particular song is kind of ruined in its message and emotion by turning it into disco, but apologise for my inflammatory way of putting it across. What do you think of Cascada, by the way?
catherinespark 3 years ago
catherine, ive never thought of myself as "one-minded", however, i also never thought of myself as "infinitely wise" either, but when it comes to this genre, im quite well versed, you dont like this version, fine, but disco was meant to be happy uplifting music, thats all, whats wrong with that? the producers took a relatively dark song and brought a "happiness" twist to it, and exposed it to a whole new generation(at the time) is that a crime?
discoguy79 3 years ago
that was one of the great things about disco, it could take the saddest most depressing song, and make it seem "happy", did i like every disco song? hell no!! there was a fair amount of cheese in this genre as well.
discoguy79 3 years ago
i would imagine that you probably would have supported the anti-disco rally back in july 1979, held at cominskey park. due to discos immense popularity, rockers revolted and burned disco records at half time, i thought it was kind of racist, since most disco artists were black... i will get back to u on cascada, however, i will warn you, you may not like my assessment of her, since i find most of todays music and its artists to be quite generic..i hope the air is clearer now..
discoguy79 3 years ago
Looking at it like that - taking sad songs and turning them into happier ones, that seems like a hopeful outlook, which has to be a good thing. I now wish I did like this version more(!)
catherinespark 3 years ago
I suppose for songs like this I would support a medium of hope with a tinge of sadness, which I'm not sure the disco does for me, though I don't think I would be out there protesting aganist disco - it's not personally my type, but it's not 'bad' music. I didn't mean you were one minded necessarily, just that I thought that at the time. I can also see now and accept that you know the original, which is a great interest and relief.
catherinespark 3 years ago
I guess the image of 'cheese' in a fair amount as you say has tainted disco to some degree, in peoples' minds now - so being open minded would be important. The air is much clearer now, and don't worry; if I don't like your assesment of her, we're even, as you disliked my initial assessment of this.
catherinespark 3 years ago
Also, given that pumicious helped write the comment, and he is aware of the inflammatory nature of that particular part of it as well, can you give him a little benefit of the doubt and ease off on him as well? Thanks...
catherinespark 3 years ago
thats correct pumy, you will never acquire the knowelage i have when it comes to this genre, i was part of it, you werent, if you knew about music you would have known that no musical idiom ever "dies" it morphs into something else, the word "disco" died, the music didnt, disco became "dance" at or around 1982, the music became what it is today, "dance music". instead of pinpointing grammatical errors which clearly shows your age, maybe you should take music 101.
discoguy79 3 years ago
@discoguy79 actually disco became high energy first after that phase it was called dance music and has so many offshoots now I don't care to name all of them.
