A lot of these same critics liked to hound a guy named Schmidt a few decades back for the same bullsh*t. Pat has always been a first class guy; grateful to the Phillies for paying him.
He has the ability to make us laugh more than cry so what's the whining about?
Pat the bat proved you right again last night. Big home run, 2 out, 2 strikes, bottome of the 10th, down by a run, Pat connects and drives one into the left field stands to win the game. Good video, I'm tired of hearing all that shit about Burrell. I guess people have to have someone to blame the problems on, and why not pick him? He was lights out after the all star break and now he's in a contract year. I'm pulling for a big year from Pat the Bat.
richard, i dont know where you come up with "phillies fans have embraced Burrell" stuff. I think the guy totally sux. A disappointment is an understatement. It all comes down to the GM.
What sucks about him? 2nd among NL OF in OBP last year, 9th in SLG, 6th in ISO power, 3rd in Runs created per game, 3rd in BB/K rate, 1st in BB%, 1st in BB, 2nd in AB per HR
you're very smart. you clearly have a good mind for baseball. but this video was made a year or two ago. now pat's hitting better than ever. nice video!
The problem with Phillies has been the same for fucking years.....too cheap on pitching. The ownership doesn't care about winning a World Series, they just care about filling the stadium and selling "Dollar Dogs". To be honest the Phillies winning the division was the worst thing they could have done. Now the owners are even more convinced they don't have to spend money as people will fill the stadium with false dreams of winning it all this year.

ROKIZ SUK!
I think what pissed people off the most before 2nd half 2007 was the lack of aggression in the middle of the lineup. However, I WILL say he is slowly but surely living up to what the scouts said about 8 years ago......Strikeouts will fall to 100 and walks will rise above 100. That said, if you were to start a team, would you pick Burrell over Howard, Utley, Rowand, or J Roll?? I have trouble saying yes!
I am not a little girl and I did not hear any of that stuff from my dad these are my own thoughts and opinions, think of them what you will, but I personally do not believe that he plays to his potential and I have seen better than him.
You also can't compare him to players from other cities saying that he gets more criticism because you don't live in those cities and do not have a vast number of their opinions on which to make that statement. Quite simply, if Burrell leaves the Phillies will win. One more thing... I don't see what you other fellow Philly woman see in him he is BUTT UGLY and has limited skills, unless you're a gold digger I don't see how he can appeal to you.
Look, little girl, I don't know what you know about baseball, but apparently it isn't very much. Most of Philadelphia has embraced Burrell after this past season, so I don't know where you're coming up with this random trash.
That is why Burrell is criticized because of his lack of concern and inability to provide the team with a much needed push in crucial situations. He's also slower than a dead turtle.
pressure is on and doesn't seem to care about his failed attempt. But when i say that I don't mean like he gets over it I mean it looks like "hey i struck out to end the game, but that's ok cause I'm making more money than most people will ever see in a lifetime!"
Ok sure, Pat Burrell is criticized. It is not because he has a big paycheck... it is because he doesn't earn this pay check. Who cares if you get a single if you strike out with someone on third. NO ONE!!! The point is that Burrell may have adequate numbers, but you can't even try to compare him to Ryan Howard. Yes Howard strikes out a lot too, but he also hits 50, ok not 30, but 50 home runs and continues to knock in a lot of RBIs. The point is that Burrell doesn't deliver when the
"Who cares if you get a single if you strike out with someone on third. NO ONE!!!" This just doesn't make sense, what the hell are you talking about? And why does eveyone think I'm criticizing Ryan Howard? Howard is awesome, the point is RISP stats are stupid
Soriano's gonna be making 18 million dollars a year when he's well past his prime (34-38 years old). It's a few years down the line, but the Phillies would have been foolish to give him that kind of money.
pat burrell doesnt want to leave philadelphia because he says that the only two teams that he wants to go to other than philly are boston and new york yankees. and since boston has ramirez and new york has matsui, they dont want him. i love burrell and hope he never leaves but unless boston or new york suddenly need an outfielder, phillies are keeping him.
Burrell is the man....I only buy section 138 tickets just to cheer him on!! The stats speak for themselves this year....Past 16 games he has what? 9 HR ..... Keep doin what you do PAt the Bat !
After 2008, he is. He seems to want to play here actually, otherwise he would have left by now. I think they need to try to sign him for a discount to see if he wants to stay.
burrell has been the best hitter since the all-star break so the maker of this video does look pretty smart right now, even thought the guy was hitting like .200 at one point this year. if burrell was a little better on D and didn't land that huge contract he'd probably be a fan favourite in philly right now.
In response to jiggyy, since youtube is all over the place with comments: His average going up didn't surprise me because his BABIP was really low in the first half so it was bound to average out. What surprised me greatly was the power surge. I never thought he'd reach 26 HRs after his poor start, let alone have this many by Sept 7th
fuck the phillies and fuck pat burrel. it seems hes only good against the mets and how the hell is that going to help the phillies out. ryan howard shouldnt have won MVP even though he had a great year his phillies didnt and they finished more than 10 games behind the mets which is PATHETIC. this year even though phillies swept in four games they fell back to six games and they also lost a game with a six run lead. phillies are pieces of shit
Yep, that .404 OBP and .512 SLG is a real downer on the team. So basically the Phillies finishing ten games behind the Mets is pathetic? Why? Because the Mets suck? Cause that sure is what you're implying.
Thank you, thank you, thank you. I have been trying to explain this to people, it's nice to actually see it in writing. I am glad to know that not everyone trashes Pat. GO PHILLIES!!!
I really think Burrell catches so much heat because he was the 1st overall pick and is like all other first picks in the city of Philadelphia we just expect too much and get too little.Iverson,Lindros, Randall Cunningham we all expected them to come in a win us championships and they all play well but they can never win one so we get frustrated and start blaming them for the team's problems.
how is it going too far? is it offensive? you basically made my point for me, Schmidt was a career .267 and that tells you nothing about his power or how often he didn't make an out. That's what makes it useless. His career .380 obp and .527 slg tell you a lot more. Batting average treats walks, HBP, sac flies and sac bunts like they never happened. OPS+ is an even better stat, but it's not easy to calculate
This video doesn't show one stat that is needed to be seen...Pat Burrell is batting a current .239 BA, and has a career average of .257. Also Pat Burrell will strike out 1 out of ever 3.5 ABs. Thats not clutch. He is an over payed/rated player. Pat averages 1 strike out a game...hes worthless!
How can you say that a BA is a worthless stat when all the best hitters in baseball hold the highest BA. Ordonez, Jones, Suzuki, Lee...I saw Burrell two years ago at an Reading Phills game and i believe he struck out 3 times and grounded out once at a AA level.
it's worthless because it ignores certain plate appearances
A-rod is by far the best player in MLB this year yet is 27th in batting average, placido polanco is 12th in batting average; does that make him a better hitter? no, and he's not even close
Are you joking, BA is a worthless stat? Wow. You are a bleeping moron sir. Yes Arod may be batting 27th, but you fail to mention that at that spot, he is standing at a solid .310 batting average. And a good hitter is a good hitter, you don't need to have 50 homer power to be a great hitter like Polanco is, man I wish we would have kept him to play 3B.
Ed Wade really screwed the Phillies over by putting that no-trade clause in Burrell's contract. I'm sure we could've found a home for him last offseason if there wasnt that no-trade clause. Don't get me wrong, Burrell isn't that bad of a player, he's just not worth what we're paying him. I'd rather see the Bourn, Rowand, Victorino OF play everyday, because it is probably the best defensive outfield in baseball and allows for more speed on the bases.
this video may be fine and dandy and you can point out ur statistics all you want. however, pat burrell was a former 1st round #1 overall selection in the 1998 draft. as a number one overall pick you should be paid a lot but u should also be worth what ur getting paid. Burrell is a decent outfielder and all he just doesnt cut it. how many all star games has he won? or maybe silver slugger awards? golden gloves? 0! thats pretty pathetic for a number one pick wouldnt you say.
For what it's worth, you're my hero right now. It drives me crazy that they call him a mistake. The Phillies wouldn't be the same without him. He's a good player. I don't know why people hate him so much!
The beauty of Win Shares is that they implicitly tell the value of a player's relative production (e.g, if player X's HRs contributed to wins), so were Pat Burrell worth his salt, he'd still have a higher ratio of Win Shares to AB compared to Soriano, right?
The above is a bogus statistic because teams need everyday outfielders who rack up Win Shares, but Burrell still fails the test by requiring 25%+ more ABs per Win Share compared to Soriano.
17 Win Shares in 462 ABs isn't awful, but they come at a high price. No one would complain were Burrell paid Frank Catalanotto dollars. Same position (plus some more), same ABs, same amount of WS, similar age, but many millions cheaper.
DBrown28's comment about Burrell "feasting on bad pitching" is interesting. While, naturally, an average player will hit better against poor pitching, Pat Burrell's been accused of having "padded" stats due to his monster games against pitchers who already gave up the game to every other hitter on the team. But Pat Burrell seems to take it to the extreme with multiple home runs, doubles, etc. when the opposition is losing by double digits.
In any case, Burrell's 2007 Win Shares don't even make the top 100 in NL, which is downright *pitiful* for a ballplayer in the top 1% in salary and 23rd overall. Even in a supposed "good year", Burrell barely cracks the top 60 Win Shares for 2006, though he did place a respectable 18th in 2005 with 26, which was on par with Abreu and Utley.
"But Pat Burrell seems to take it to the extreme with multiple home runs, doubles, etc. when the opposition is losing by double digits." this just isn't true, check out when he got HRs last year and get back to me
I agree with richard. Pat Burrell isn't able to move his left wrist he broke two seasons ago and can barely walk on his ankle. Poor guy's scared stiff of Phillies fans. He gets death threats and extortions from lousy people like them. Pat is one reason I like the Phillies more, because I've met him a few times and his is a nice person.
whatever man!! he fucking sucks an we need 2 get rid of his sorry ass!!! look at his numbers now!! hes a freaking bum, what are u his brother or agent..haha
dude your a doosh. Your not even a phillies fan. Your just a little bitch that sits at home to evaluate yourself just to see how much of a faggit you are. I live in philly and I will fight you. send me a email if you want to defend Pat the Bat you'll get a Pat the Bat to the face faggit!
I'm not a Phillies fan because I defend a player who plays for the Phillies. Good logic. Not that I expect much from someone who talks big on the internet.
You're kidding yourself, honestly rank who you'd want on your team among the Phillies' outfielders and Soriano, you have to admit Burrell is the worst of the five, in fact everybody reply with your rankings. I'll say:
i'd have to put soriano in 4th and move everyone else up, and put someone like werth or dobbs in 5th. i hate pat burrell... i have since he cussed me out when i was, like, 7 when i asked him to sign a baseball for me. hes a jerk, and very class-less.
you are fooling yourself and whats he doin now A ROOKIE IS PLAYING MORE TIME IN MICHAEL BOURN AND ITS NOT ALL ABOUT STATS ITS ABOUT SHOWING PASSION AND TO COMPARE RYAN HOWARD TO BURRELL IS A JOKE
i like how he chooses not to reply to this message, he replies to the messages that spell one name with an extra e on the end, or nit picks at things that arent even the main point of the message
so sorry I don't respond to everything though I see Bourn isn't starting anymore as Burrell has been killing the ball in July. Maybe moving him to 6th actually HAS helped: batting 6th this year .291 avg .447 obp .558 slg
lets say this put all stats away. will burrell ever make it to the hall of fame in cooperstown. answer, hell no! not even a chance and he was a number one pick overall. that is piss poor
if we put the stats away, that would be difficult to determine. what would the voters base it on? what larrah7 on youtube thinks? whoever said he was a hall of fame player anyway? you're just being ridiculous.
Check out Burrell's numbers when the Phillies are less than 5 games out of first. Also, check out his numbers in September.......and also when the game is CLOSE AND LATE......not just close.
"Check out Burrell's numbers when the Phillies are less than 5 games out of first." huh? i dont think any such insane stat exists, nor would it really matter
maybe i should look up his stats in the rain on sundays, gotta be clutch in the rain
this guy does bring up some good points, but i think they got all they could for abreu. abreu has a big contract and wasn't living up to it. the yankees were one of the only teams that were interested, and getting prospects for him was all they were offering. look at the tear soriano's on this year. last time i checked, burrell's batting average is around the .200. but while burrell isn't living up to his contract, it's also managements fault for offering it.
burrell's at the end of his contract and he's in his early 30's, so he's struggling in the prime of his career. soriano won't be in the prime of his career at the end of his contract. think before you write. and read what i write, dope. i said they gave him a standing O. they can cheer in their seats, i have no problem with them cheering for pat. the standing O was over the top for 2 HRs in a game, that's all.
Dick, you don't need stats to realize Fat Burrell sucks (are you going to call the "name police" on me for that one?) You can give me all the stats you want to, and OBP this and that. The fact is, he's getting benched for marginal players.. Why don't you just man up, suck up some pride and say you were wrong in saying he's a good player. Nobody else wanted this guy on their team, which is the reason why he's still here rotting on the bench.
you can't just remember all of his 500+ PA last year in your head
me man up? i give you fucking facts and you think I'm supposed to be insulted by absurdly unclever insults? fat Burrell? Dick? did you learn these gems in 3rd grade or what? oh my god, he called me dick, and what is this "name police" nonsense? is that supposed to be clever too? that doesn't even make sense
Relax, Dick. Just because you're dead wrong on something you created doesn't mean you need to be so hostile. He got benched last year in favor of good 4th OFs, Conine and Delucci, and now he's getting benched in favor of marginal players - Bourn, Dobss and Werth. Where's your common sense at? You're name is "richard." I call you Dick for short. What's wrong with that?
you are name is richard, nice grammar. ignorance is why i can't stand Burrell haters. Conine's numbers with the phillies last year: .280 .327 .390, yeah great fuckin job, that's WORSE than Burrell is doing now, but he did ok?
Throw numbers out the window. Can we just put this whole arguement to rest with a simple question.....If its late in the game in a big spot where is Burrell on your list of guys you want up there??
I think Burrell would be my 7th choice behind the first 6 hitters of the Phils lineup + Greg Dobbs.
You can't throw numbers out the window. The reason we have them is it'd be impossible to remember the 6500 PA by every Phillie last year. I don't have a "list" but given he homered off Wagner pretty recently, yeah he's on there.
The only guys I wouldn't want up there would probably be any pitcher, Nunez, Helms, but it's a dopey question IMHO
Any time in the game is key. There's no time limit in baseball so any time is crunch time.
I was just demonstrating below how much an overrated statistic OBP% is, and that was your only merit that Burrell is better than Soriano, which hes not, not even close, any team would be crazy to think hes even close to as good as Alfonso.
Reason #1 he is still a Phillie, he is getting paid 13 mill this year and 14 next yr and they dont wanna eat that money
but if you're arguing against the value of OBP, you're way out of your element. not making outs is key. in 05, soriano made outs 69.1% of the time, Burrell only 61.1%
runs scored however is almost entirely up to the TEAM cause once you're on base, it's up to the team to score you
and can we please cut out this argument? Burrell is near the end of a highly back-loaded contract (the first few years of which he made 1-5 million) so he is NOT the highest paid player
technically that is Utley right now who will make an average of 12.5 million a year for the next seven years
pat the bat deserved one more year in cbp than they coulda let him do w.e. he needed to get his dues for the 10 years he was here.

shit - then I'm glad the Phillies traded him to the Rays......cause I get to see him more now.
I'm still a Phillies fan but am also a fan of my hometeam Rays.
Streaky Burrell will do just fine in their studded-hitter lineup
Great job on the stats - you should work to become a GM someday - you obviously like the stats side of the game
Good luck

excellent video man, love the music as well.
im glad someone finally gives Burrell a little respect.
25+ homers and 80+ RBI's aren't just easily attainable stats.
his defense may be subpar and his speed as well, but the guy does not deserve a lot of the criticism he receives.
instead of always criticizing the Phils and their management, let's be BEHIND them, you never know, it may lead to something positive.

richardtheconquerer 4 years ago
Ok sure, Pat Burrell is criticized. It is not because he has a big paycheck... it is because he doesn't earn this pay check. Who cares if you get a single if you strike out with someone on third. NO ONE!!! The point is that Burrell may have adequate numbers, but you can't even try to compare him to Ryan Howard. Yes Howard strikes out a lot too, but he also hits 50, ok not 30, but 50 home runs and continues to knock in a lot of RBIs. The point is that Burrell doesn't deliver when the

Soriano's gonna be making 18 million dollars a year when he's well past his prime (34-38 years old). It's a few years down the line, but the Phillies would have been foolish to give him that kind of money.

pat burrell doesnt want to leave philadelphia because he says that the only two teams that he wants to go to other than philly are boston and new york yankees. and since boston has ramirez and new york has matsui, they dont want him. i love burrell and hope he never leaves but unless boston or new york suddenly need an outfielder, phillies are keeping him.

btw is he a free agent after this season? because i can definitely see him getting out of here as soon as his contract's up and i can't blame him.
jiggyy 4 years ago
After 2008, he is. He seems to want to play here actually, otherwise he would have left by now. I think they need to try to sign him for a discount to see if he wants to stay.
richardtheconquerer 4 years ago
burrell has been the best hitter since the all-star break so the maker of this video does look pretty smart right now, even thought the guy was hitting like .200 at one point this year. if burrell was a little better on D and didn't land that huge contract he'd probably be a fan favourite in philly right now.
jiggyy 4 years ago
In response to jiggyy, since youtube is all over the place with comments: His average going up didn't surprise me because his BABIP was really low in the first half so it was bound to average out. What surprised me greatly was the power surge. I never thought he'd reach 26 HRs after his poor start, let alone have this many by Sept 7th
richardtheconquerer 4 years ago
fuck the phillies and fuck pat burrel. it seems hes only good against the mets and how the hell is that going to help the phillies out. ryan howard shouldnt have won MVP even though he had a great year his phillies didnt and they finished more than 10 games behind the mets which is PATHETIC. this year even though phillies swept in four games they fell back to six games and they also lost a game with a six run lead. phillies are pieces of shit

Yep, that .404 OBP and .512 SLG is a real downer on the team. So basically the Phillies finishing ten games behind the Mets is pathetic? Why? Because the Mets suck? Cause that sure is what you're implying.

I really think Burrell catches so much heat because he was the 1st overall pick and is like all other first picks in the city of Philadelphia we just expect too much and get too little.Iverson,Lindros, Randall Cunningham we all expected them to come in a win us championships and they all play well but they can never win one so we get frustrated and start blaming them for the team's problems.

reid1234567890 4 years ago
I understand some of your points in supporting Burrell, but calling BA a meaningless stat is going to far. Your comments backing that up are way off.
Mike Schmidt was a career .267, but you did not mention that with that average he hit 548 homers, and played superb D at the hot corner.
eagles9067 4 years ago
how is it going too far? is it offensive? you basically made my point for me, Schmidt was a career .267 and that tells you nothing about his power or how often he didn't make an out. That's what makes it useless. His career .380 obp and .527 slg tell you a lot more. Batting average treats walks, HBP, sac flies and sac bunts like they never happened. OPS+ is an even better stat, but it's not easy to calculate
richardtheconquerer 4 years ago
This video doesn't show one stat that is needed to be seen...Pat Burrell is batting a current .239 BA, and has a career average of .257. Also Pat Burrell will strike out 1 out of ever 3.5 ABs. Thats not clutch. He is an over payed/rated player. Pat averages 1 strike out a game...hes worthless!
Kulpy11 4 years ago
you need to learn a little bit about baseball before you make comments
batting average = worthless stat
Mike Schmidt was a career .260 hitter
also how would my video from FEB show his batting average now?
his OBP is .400 right now
richardtheconquerer 4 years ago
How can you say that a BA is a worthless stat when all the best hitters in baseball hold the highest BA. Ordonez, Jones, Suzuki, Lee...I saw Burrell two years ago at an Reading Phills game and i believe he struck out 3 times and grounded out once at a AA level.
Kulpy11 4 years ago
he didn't get on base in a game you saw *gasp*
it's worthless because it ignores certain plate appearances
A-rod is by far the best player in MLB this year yet is 27th in batting average, placido polanco is 12th in batting average; does that make him a better hitter? no, and he's not even close
richardtheconquerer 4 years ago
Are you joking, BA is a worthless stat? Wow. You are a bleeping moron sir. Yes Arod may be batting 27th, but you fail to mention that at that spot, he is standing at a solid .310 batting average. And a good hitter is a good hitter, you don't need to have 50 homer power to be a great hitter like Polanco is, man I wish we would have kept him to play 3B.
eagles9067 4 years ago
I also didn't mean to imply Polanco was bad. He knows his weakness is power, so he works to just get base hits.
richardtheconquerer 4 years ago
Ed Wade really screwed the Phillies over by putting that no-trade clause in Burrell's contract. I'm sure we could've found a home for him last offseason if there wasnt that no-trade clause. Don't get me wrong, Burrell isn't that bad of a player, he's just not worth what we're paying him. I'd rather see the Bourn, Rowand, Victorino OF play everyday, because it is probably the best defensive outfield in baseball and allows for more speed on the bases.
pfost 4 years ago
Nice video,Burrell is a solid out fielder with a cannon for an arm, he may be over paid but its not his fault.
astiff713 4 years ago
this video may be fine and dandy and you can point out ur statistics all you want. however, pat burrell was a former 1st round #1 overall selection in the 1998 draft. as a number one overall pick you should be paid a lot but u should also be worth what ur getting paid. Burrell is a decent outfielder and all he just doesnt cut it. how many all star games has he won? or maybe silver slugger awards? golden gloves? 0! thats pretty pathetic for a number one pick wouldnt you say.
larrah7 4 years ago
HAHAHAHAHA "how many all star games has he won?" HAHAHAH
that may be the stupidest thing i have EVER read
how many all star games has anyone won?
and who cares about awards that people VOTE on?
richardtheconquerer 4 years ago
Last time i checked, every award in every goddamn sport is voted on.
The stupidest thing i have ever read is that ba is a meaningless stat.
And the fact that 'stupidest' is not a word.

The beauty of Win Shares is that they implicitly tell the value of a player's relative production (e.g, if player X's HRs contributed to wins), so were Pat Burrell worth his salt, he'd still have a higher ratio of Win Shares to AB compared to Soriano, right?
2006 Soriano: 649 AB / 30 WS = 21.63
2006 Burrell: 462 AB / 17 WS = 27.18
Whelkman 4 years ago
The above is a bogus statistic because teams need everyday outfielders who rack up Win Shares, but Burrell still fails the test by requiring 25%+ more ABs per Win Share compared to Soriano.
17 Win Shares in 462 ABs isn't awful, but they come at a high price. No one would complain were Burrell paid Frank Catalanotto dollars. Same position (plus some more), same ABs, same amount of WS, similar age, but many millions cheaper.
Whelkman 4 years ago
yes well, I'm sure the Phillies fans would be happy with Soriano in a few years
in his age 34-38 seasons, he's going to make $18 million a year
richardtheconquerer 4 years ago
DBrown28's comment about Burrell "feasting on bad pitching" is interesting. While, naturally, an average player will hit better against poor pitching, Pat Burrell's been accused of having "padded" stats due to his monster games against pitchers who already gave up the game to every other hitter on the team. But Pat Burrell seems to take it to the extreme with multiple home runs, doubles, etc. when the opposition is losing by double digits.
Whelkman 4 years ago
In any case, Burrell's 2007 Win Shares don't even make the top 100 in NL, which is downright *pitiful* for a ballplayer in the top 1% in salary and 23rd overall. Even in a supposed "good year", Burrell barely cracks the top 60 Win Shares for 2006, though he did place a respectable 18th in 2005 with 26, which was on par with Abreu and Utley.
Whelkman 4 years ago
Just a little more fuel for the fire...
Soriano 2006 Win Shares: 30 (7th overall and only one WS short of Howard)
Burrell 2006 Win Shares: 17 (12-way tie for 47th, yawn)
Whelkman 4 years ago
getting far less at bats doesn't really help Burrell all that much
richardtheconquerer 4 years ago
"But Pat Burrell seems to take it to the extreme with multiple home runs, doubles, etc. when the opposition is losing by double digits." this just isn't true, check out when he got HRs last year and get back to me

I agree with richard. Pat Burrell isn't able to move his left wrist he broke two seasons ago and can barely walk on his ankle. Poor guy's scared stiff of Phillies fans. He gets death threats and extortions from lousy people like them. Pat is one reason I like the Phillies more, because I've met him a few times and his is a nice person.

You're kidding yourself, honestly rank who you'd want on your team among the Phillies' outfielders and Soriano, you have to admit Burrell is the worst of the five, in fact everybody reply with your rankings. I'll say:
1. Soriano
2. Rowand
3. Victorino (almost put him second)
4. Bourne
5. Burrell
Downcannon 4 years ago
why does no one know how to spell Bourn's fucking name?

Herman8er 4 years ago
this guy does bring up some good points, but i think they got all they could for abreu. abreu has a big contract and wasn't living up to it. the yankees were one of the only teams that were interested, and getting prospects for him was all they were offering. look at the tear soriano's on this year. last time i checked, burrell's batting average is around the .200. but while burrell isn't living up to his contract, it's also managements fault for offering it.
jiggyy 4 years ago
true, though things should be interesting once Soriano gets into the final years of his contract when i believe he'll be about 37-38
richardtheconquerer 4 years ago
burrell's at the end of his contract and he's in his early 30's, so he's struggling in the prime of his career. soriano won't be in the prime of his career at the end of his contract. think before you write. and read what i write, dope. i said they gave him a standing O. they can cheer in their seats, i have no problem with them cheering for pat. the standing O was over the top for 2 HRs in a game, that's all.
PorkRollEggAndCheese 4 years ago
considering you're responding to a comment that wasn't directed at you, maybe you should learn how to read
I was talking about how much he'll be paid at the end of his absurd contract.

richardtheconquerer 4 years ago
pork roll who are you talking to?
jiggyy 4 years ago
Dick, you don't need stats to realize Fat Burrell sucks (are you going to call the "name police" on me for that one?) You can give me all the stats you want to, and OBP this and that. The fact is, he's getting benched for marginal players.. Why don't you just man up, suck up some pride and say you were wrong in saying he's a good player. Nobody else wanted this guy on their team, which is the reason why he's still here rotting on the bench.
PorkRollEggAndCheese 4 years ago
actually, yes you would need stats to realize it
you can't just remember all of his 500+ PA last year in your head
me man up? i give you fucking facts and you think I'm supposed to be insulted by absurdly unclever insults? fat Burrell? Dick? did you learn these gems in 3rd grade or what? oh my god, he called me dick, and what is this "name police" nonsense? is that supposed to be clever too? that doesn't even make sense
richardtheconquerer 4 years ago
Relax, Dick. Just because you're dead wrong on something you created doesn't mean you need to be so hostile. He got benched last year in favor of good 4th OFs, Conine and Delucci, and now he's getting benched in favor of marginal players - Bourn, Dobss and Werth. Where's your common sense at? You're name is "richard." I call you Dick for short. What's wrong with that?
PorkRollEggAndCheese 4 years ago
you are name is richard, nice grammar. ignorance is why i can't stand Burrell haters. Conine's numbers with the phillies last year: .280 .327 .390, yeah great fuckin job, that's WORSE than Burrell is doing now, but he did ok?
richardtheconquerer 4 years ago
Throw numbers out the window. Can we just put this whole arguement to rest with a simple question.....If its late in the game in a big spot where is Burrell on your list of guys you want up there??
I think Burrell would be my 7th choice behind the first 6 hitters of the Phils lineup + Greg Dobbs.
DBrown28 4 years ago
You can't throw numbers out the window. The reason we have them is it'd be impossible to remember the 6500 PA by every Phillie last year. I don't have a "list" but given he homered off Wagner pretty recently, yeah he's on there.
The only guys I wouldn't want up there would probably be any pitcher, Nunez, Helms, but it's a dopey question IMHO
Any time in the game is key. There's no time limit in baseball so any time is crunch time.
richardtheconquerer 4 years ago
I was just demonstrating below how much an overrated statistic OBP% is, and that was your only merit that Burrell is better than Soriano, which hes not, not even close, any team would be crazy to think hes even close to as good as Alfonso.
Reason #1 he is still a Phillie, he is getting paid 13 mill this year and 14 next yr and they dont wanna eat that money
thats it
eagles9067 4 years ago
as a hitter, the best thing you can do for your team is not make an out, so no OBP is not overrated
if anything, it is underrated since a lot of baseball broadcasts don't even mention it
richardtheconquerer 4 years ago
not when you are getting paid 13 million to protect ryan howard and drive in runs damn it
he just goes up there and doesnt swing
underrated my ass!
The object of the game is to score runs
not stand there and act like the pitch is inside when its outside lol
eagles9067 4 years ago
"he just goes up there and doesnt swing" now you're just lying
"The object of the game is to score runs" sure is, having a high OBP will help that, always.

In 2006, OBP was .413, but still only 92 runs.
Case and Point!!!!!!!!!!
eagles9067 4 years ago
see above comment
plus your strange logic ignores how many times they came to the plate
rollins 732 PA (2005) 758 PA (2006)
giambi 545 PA, 579 PA
and Jimmy scored more runs? WOW, amazing
richardtheconquerer 4 years ago
i was just showing the extreme example, but fine
look at 05 soriano and burrell
burrell was on base more than soriano, but soriano scored 24 more times
eagles9067 4 years ago
if you don't like Burrell, that's fine
but if you're arguing against the value of OBP, you're way out of your element. not making outs is key. in 05, soriano made outs 69.1% of the time, Burrell only 61.1%
runs scored however is almost entirely up to the TEAM cause once you're on base, it's up to the team to score you
2005 Burrell's RC/27 7.05
2005 Soriano 5.58
richardtheconquerer 4 years ago
at least pat burrell is keeping up that great OBP% this yr and proving he is worth being the highest paid player on the phils at 13 million
eagles9067 4 years ago
and can we please cut out this argument? Burrell is near the end of a highly back-loaded contract (the first few years of which he made 1-5 million) so he is NOT the highest paid player
technically that is Utley right now who will make an average of 12.5 million a year for the next seven years
richardtheconquerer 4 years ago
jesus christ this guy is a tool
he is the highest paid player right now this season
