To say Nils is a better guitarist than Bruce would be possible only if Bruce played the same style.Bryce has the raw soloing/playing style that is so easy to recognize. The same with the incredible Nils. He plays with his thumpick and the harmonics better than anyone. But is he better than clapton? Is he better than J0oe Bonamassa? No idea and it doesn´t matter. I really like when a guitarist has hes own sound and when he plays the solo different every time..to each his own!
On the next tour the crowd needs to put up signs to Bruce asking him to play a specific version of the song :). Example: The "prove it all night" intro from 78' beats every other intro on youtube. If he ever comes to the west, I'll bring a huge sign to ask Bruce to play the solo for "Because the night"...although I think he might not oblige. After he's the Boss and he decides :)!
I would ask for prove it all night 78 or saint in the city hammersmith 75 :)
But i think he would think "well...this has gone too far, after all I write the songs and play whatever I want and however I want to, i just gave too much power to my crowds" hahaha. Well, perhaps not...he's a great man lol
Nils is a great guitar player, he's the fastest of the three and he gets a very personal sound and style. He adds a really high technique level to the band!
Anyway, I still prefer the unique and powerful Bruce's way of playing and solos :) He's a very underrated guitarist...
Have you checked Bruce's guitar solos in the 78' tour and in the early 70s both with the E Street and his previous band Steel Mill??
I'd better check that first and then decide if Neil's better than him...or not. I prefer Bruce style, but Neil's a great guitarist too, they're just different!
yes i know bruce can play ive seen all the videos, i love the 78' prove it intro. i understand bruce in his younger days could rock with the best of them, but at the same time i feel nils is always been better. please dont take this the wrong way or as a knock on springsteen in any way. i am a huge springsteen fan, in fact springsteen is pritty much all i listen to. 10 shows in 09 alone. bruce is the boss for a reason
Ok, sorry for the missunderstanding. You know, there are some people in youtube (and elsewhere) who dont really know bruce music, shows and stuff...and they dare to say he's a horrible guitarist, he just writes comercial songs...
I dindt think you didnt like him at all, but its quite a surprise for me that you prefer Neil even though you know bruce's best guitar efforts. You know, a matter of taste :) And yeah, he's the boss for...lots of reasons! :)
I would say it´s about growing up. He wants to leave the city he used to live as well as his parents home. So he goes "down to lucky town" where he wants to lose "the blues he had found". But after all he recognizes that leaving his hometown wasnt the best idea ("I had some victory that was just failure in deceit, now the joke is coming up trough the soles of my feet"). In the end he figures out that he had everything he ever wanted in his hometown and so he went back
looks like the rising tour to me though could be wrong, wasn't giants 3 of magic anyway, plus Bruce always wore those sorta waist coats on the rising tour and mostly just a shirt on the magic tour.
Actually I like Bruce's guitar solo efforts better than Nils. For example I've been trying to find the Because the Night 3rd night at Shea stadium back in 2000, which I think was just an awesome solo mid song. Bruce just shreds it. I miss Miknosurrender's videos. These days Nils does the solo on Because the night, and I just dont like his erratic movements while playing on stage and the solo itself.
Make no mistake, I am big fan of Nils and Steve too! I am an E-Street Band fan.
Agree. Bruce gives me some feelings when he plays his solos that Neil doesnt usually do.
I loved Neils solo on Because the Night this tour, but theres no better version of the song that the ones with great bruce solos in 1978. What I really disliked was Neil taking the solo in Prove it all night this tour...the sounds he did just didnt fit the song. Again, nothing better like the 78 tour :)
Anyway, Neil and Steve are great guitar players :)
well shane Fontayne wasnt that bad back in the 90s but Nils is much better, frankly. The "other Band" didnt have this house rockin, pants droppin, heart stoppin sound ;)
I agree the ''other band'' arent in the same league as ESB but they werent dreadful...it was a good sucessful tour and the albums are still very good considering
Yeah, the guy had 15 years of good music and he's had another good streak since, so he was entitled to a few mistakes. Still, there were good songs even on the lesser albums---like this song.
i saw the band at that time he was playing with, they were awesome. no one tried to be e street, they were new street. great tour, great band, and bruce never lost anything playing withose guys.
I love this song, although i preferd human touch to lucky town,i hate the band during them periods they didnt suit bruce!Shoulda stuck with the E Street!
Lucky Town is such a under rated Springsteen album. Sure, he should never have fired the E Street Band for those idoits he played with but he wanted to try something new and I reckon let at night, he regrets that he ever let go of the greatest backing band in rock history!
Maybe but they certinley were not happy that he did not want to play with them anymore. They are intergal to his music, vital and it's telling that he had his leanest creative period during the 90's without them.
Yeah Lucky Town is a decent album, Human Touch was awful though. Ghost Of Tom Joad has it's moments, Streets Of Phildelphia is great and I really love Lift Me Up. But compared to his earlier work and the music he makes now, it doesnt stand up to scrunity.
It's very good but the rest of the album is the worst material that Bruce ever saw fit for public consumption. Appranteily he wrote a album in 1994 and Jon Landau thought that it was so poor that he said to Bruce that it wasn't worthy of his fans. So he released Greatest Hits instead!
Well one of the songs was meant to be Nothing Man which I find hard to believe as it fits perfectily into The Rising's 9/11 theme. There were a few rap style songs on it and Back In Your Arms, which I love, was going to be in there somewhere. But Landau listened to it and said that Bruce would be making a big mistake if he brought it out. So Landau suggested that he bring back The E Street Band for a money spinning greatest hits cd. Thats all I know dude.
billybillyboab - couldn't agree more, I have recently dug out my Lucky Town cd, and been playing in my car to and from work, and I just cannot get over how great it is. Love the title track, but the big one is The Big Muddy is absolutely fantastic. See also my comment on Lucky Town videos.
'Got in some trouble and needed a hand from a friend of mine, This old friend had a figure in mind, It was never illegal just a little bit funny, He said ''Come on don't tell me the rich don't know sooner or later it all comes down to money''. The Big Muddy is great, as is Local Hero, it's got such a laid back feel to it. Lucky Town is a cracking rock song, any idea what it is about? If I Should Fall Behind is beautiful and I think that Souls Of The Departed is semi-autobiographical.
I think that this song is about a man who is lost and not feeling happy with himself ("house's to crowded, clothes too tight") and is in the process of finding himself "there is somebody calling my secret name", "I wanna lose these blues I found". Lucky Town is, I presume, the place where he can find himself again. Probably his lucky town is New Jersey? :)
Anyway, that is 100% my own interpretation... could be something else.
Yeah I think most Bruce fans agree that the band he toured with in the early 90's were pretty dreadful. As far as I know when he recorded Lucky Town, he did most of it himself with Roy Bittan and got the band in later to add guiater tracks and such.
What was your sampling technique? Did every fan have an equal chance of being sampled, thus, assuming your sample size was about 400, or more, that your conclusion is correct about "most fans" assessment of the 92-93 band.
I don't have that kind of data either but my opinion is the band was very good. Their main flaw for most fans, I think, was that they weren't the E-Street Band.
