Actually it's European 2 in 8. Japanese 2 in 8 uses a different linking pattern (basically an interconnected chain). So far I've been sticking to European weaves for these tutorials, but I may delve into Japanese styles eventually.
This is a traditional chainmaille weave that has been around for centuries. Dylan and I both are copying a pattern that was used by kings (hence the name) and the wealthy as a maille technique for their armor. Of course, they didn't wear it as a choker, and would have used much smaller rings so there weren't holes, but it's the same weave that they used.
To adjust, just use smaller rings and make more rows - that will make it less chunky if that's what you're going for.
The rings in the video are silver plated. Sterling silver is heavy so for some designs it would be uncomfortable (for example, the dragonscale choker which will be a future tutorial).
