For a Hall of Famer, Tony Esposito had a reputation for allowing long shots get past him for goals. Great to see Jeopardy's Alex Trebek score that slapshot on Tony.
What makes me sick is Gordie Howe's number is not retired from the NHL,but Gretzky's is?Howe was Mr.Hockey before Gretzky came around and to me personally if you're gonna retire #99 from the entire league, than you need to retire #9 from the entire league as well.
Bossy, Trottier, Howe, Esposito, another Esposito, Sittler, Robinson, Gretzky, Dionne, Lafleur, Perreault...jeez, all that's missing is Orr, Hull, and Richard, and you've got THE who's who of hockey all on one piece of ice. Those were the glory days of hockey folks. Not like the cookie cutter, snot-nose kids who play today. I don't even watch hockey anymore, it's so boring.

when they played hockey then..they played for the love of the game...not for the money..shame on the players of today...because their outrage salaries the average joe cant afford to take his family to an NHL game.
@DiggerD007 not all players feel this way. James Reimer of the Leafs makes 550k a year and claims he makes tooo much. And he's a pretty good rookie goalie. so no not all of them
I agree with allenst comment, what a collection of talent led by number 9. If you ever get a chance to meet him, you will find one of the most gracious persons you will ever find. He deserved every cheer that night because he should have never been forced to leave Detroit. One of the worst things that ever happened to hockey in the Motor City.
Larry Robinson looks like a 70's pimp Daddy! Seriously are you kidding me with this lineup? The Prince of whale starters is a freaking whos who in the history books of hockey. Hall of famers literally EVERYWHERE!!!
so was the Campbell conference stars with Bossy, Trottier, Potvin, Gretzky....good god. what's happened with the NHL...... The best player now would have been MAYBE in the top 20 back then.......
I envy you haha. I saw a few clips of him on ESPN Classic when they played the highlights of the 1954 Cup Finals, but to see him out there firsthand must've been a treat
It was and remains one of the precious memories of my childhood. Honestly back then I was more interested in basketball, because the game played faster. But there was nothing (no rock concerts yet) that could compare to Gordie skating out onto the ice and tens of thousands of people losing their minds. I cherish it , as I do most of my childhood. Wish I could beam it into your frontal lobe, you seem like such a good guy!
This was back when the all star game ment something. When the apposing conferences had a message to send to each other and there was definetly no "skipping" the all-star game to prevent injury. This is a great video...one of the best on youtube. GORDIE!!!
You are absolutely right! This was before every inch was for rent and still complain about revenue shortages. The more you have, the more you want. I agree...this looks great!
i have lived in Detroit my hole life and have met Gordie Howe many times and he is by far better than Gretzky no matter what the stats say! this must have been an amazing game!
not to mention, Ray was also the smartest best thinking defenseman to play the game. BUT, I will say Bobby Orr was probably tied with ray or maybe even a little better. Ray is a great pick tho.
It's the "good hitter" bit that does it for me. Ask Kariya about that. I could never stand high-flying defencemen who score a bizillion goals but rarely lay anybody out in the process. Was never really a fan of a guy like, say, Paul Coffey. Stevens always got my respect because he was a hard-hitter, but, not a goon. A true 2-way defenceman, and never a liability at the offencive end, NJ didn't make him the first Devil to have his number retired for nothing. The best I've seen during my 38 years.
I agree. I have tons of respect for stevens because he is a GREAt 2 way player like you said. I think hockey players ESPECIALLY Defencemen are the best when they play 2 way.
wow hockey was much less physical back then, in terms of contact
