Also, no one else could play Agnes Carpenter other than Nurse Ratchett (Louise Fletcher)...She did come from the "old school", but she took it way beyond the extreme with Karen....

If anyone wants something that resembles the truth, read "little girl blue". And, it was not stage fright that caused her anorexia. She would not have had "the sound" if that were the case. Truth is, Karen wanted every note to be studio quality, and often yelled at the musicians if there was a note off. Karen was a very kind person, but control was what she lived, and because her life was out of control, food was the only thing she though she had control of. again, read "little girl blue".

Agnes Carpenter tried to rip her ADULT millionaire daughter's shirt off. Karen was independent at 18. The family was completely over-the-top ! ! !

A 24-year-old Karen C. says, "You are smothering me. I know you mean well, BUT..." Then Richard Carpenter strolls in on her losing her virginity at 24 or 25.

Why is everyone down on their mom? She was born probably in the 1920s, and she raised her kids the way they did in her generation. No parent is perfect. She showed great concern for Karen and her weight loss -- at least someone did care.

I once read an article where RC said that he didn't believe KC was using Ipecac because constant vomiting could damage her voice. I think she did use the stuff because it said so in her autopsy. Also he needs to realize that although singing may have been her first love,she was Anorexic and that has to do with psyche. Who knows what she was thinking,the disease ravages their minds and destroys their rationale. It is possible that losing weight was more important to her when it came down to it!

There would be hundreds of days we never would have seen PHOTOS everyday of Karen Carpenter, as she lived a normal life in the Hollywood world. The Paparazzi were not as bad as what it is today....So she could have worn hundreds of different outfits we never will see....

There's a balance. When your child is an adult, yes, be concerned and love the hell out of them but at the same time, they have to make their own choices. Like when a parent has an adult child that is hooked on drugs-you can't make them stop, you can only do so much to help. I do feel bad for the mom but her controlling Karen in trying to make her stop her ED is ironically a big reason Karen did have anorexia.

@lesterclaypool1 Both me and my fifteen years older sister has had anorexia she got help in time, but I am still fighting it every day and no one in my family, ecept my sister and older brother. My grandparents and my parents still tells me to watch those calories and exercise away more than I eat. I sometimes wonder if I developed anorexia because of me wanting to be like my sister. My BMI is now 13 and I canät stop loosing.

Actually by Christmas 1974 Karen WAS looking very thin. If you watch her appearance on the Perry Como Christmas Special she is very thin. Summer of 1975 she was down to 80 lbs.

If no one really knew about bulimia back then, then why is Richard talking about the laxatives? How would he have any idea what Karen's doing with those? Better yet, how did Karen know to use them?

The fact that eating disorders where unknown to the general public during Karen's lifetime that does not mean that she as a practicing anorexic would have have not stumbled on to using them in her quest to loose weight and stay thin. In fact its well known that Karne relied on laxatives to maintain her anorexic figure. Both Richard and Agnes believed that she did not make herself vomit due to the damage it could cause to her vocal cords.

fact is in the "Business" karen would have been told of slimming aids, its well documented that even the movie studios their own doctors would give stars pills and potions to keep them slim & speeding their tits off to keep working long hours. Just becuase the Public were unaware those in the business were well aware.

Although it wasn't supposed to be funny, I was laughing hysterically the way Richard completely forgot the previous night when he found Karen making out with that creep. I just compared quaaludes to Ambien 10 mg in section 5 of the movie due to the buzz you get, and now I just learned via Karen's/Richard's argument that quaaludes also erased memory as badly as Ambien.

Actually, Karen was always very protective of Richard. None of the girlfriends that he had ever lived up to her standards. Before Randy was Maria Gadzia.. She has gone on record stating that Karen would more offen then not accompany them on dates. And jokingly state.. " Well its just the three of us again..." It used to drive Richard nuts, and finally he and Karen got in to a massive fight over it all. That is what led to Karen looking for and getting her own condo...

Great movie, but the way Karen was portrayed in this movie was introverted and anti-social. In real life, Karen, despite her insecurities, was always bubbly and outgoing and loved being around people. Still a good cautionary movie though.

i really love this movie but they messed up a little on the time line. Karen didn't really start looking very thin until the end of 75 to 76. In 74 she hired a personal trainer and looked very toned (you can see it in her Japan concerts).

This movie is great but would have been a million times better if they paid attention to minor details.

In actuality at the end of this clip her ribs weren't that apparent. U could see then yes, but if you're a thin person that's normal.

May not be for the 'average' size 12 american woman but for the 'normal' low single digit sized women that is not what most now a days call emaciated.

She is not that skinny! This is what bugs me out in those movies, maybe it's just because in the 70' being this thin wasn't normal... Well what's good about this movie is that the action is coming slowly, not all at the same time at hte beggining of it. It makes it more reallistic!
