In addition to what all of you said, I'd say Bret might have been true to his motto "I'm the best there is, the best there was and the best there'll ever be".

Only Kurt Angle or Chris Benoit (R.I.P.) might be able to compete with him in real sports, but Bret beats them at least in one thing: Never had any steroid scandals or something wrong in his career. He got screwed by Vince, that's all. And as for popularity of his gimmick, he's only comparable to Undertaker and Hulk Hogan.
