That was following the original storyline from the comic. Splinter was Yoshi's pet rat who mutated into a half-human/half-rat.

The cartoons adapted the story, and while not classed as canon amongst old fashioned TMNT fans, it certainly made the TMNT popular.

so explain this to me someone, it has been bothering me since i was a kid, splinter says the turtles took on their form because they had most recently been in contact with him, and they changed within seconds of him setting them down. but splinter becomes a rat ? wasn't he just holding them? did a rat run up his leg seconds before he changed or did he have one in his pocket or what? all i can come up with is that he didnt mean contact with him, but with the human who had dropped them...
