People who aren't into her say "oh she's the one who did that Criminal video" or "she's the one that gave that speech at the awards." Listen to her music!
Painfully beautiful describes her perfectly. I agree that I can't believe that she hasn't been more widely accepted. Now she's doing jazz vocals and settling into the genre where she really belongs. She's far too talented for mainstream. She's not a Layd Gaga who's going to fake her emotions. She's 100% authentic...
I feel that the reason that she has not been embraced by more is because of the shallow and severly restricted minds that most of the world is afflicted with.
There's a clip of of her talking to Howard Stern on here and she tells him this was the first time she's ever performed on stage. She said it was a Sony Roadshow and The Fugees and all these other Sony artists were there, and they each got 15 minutes on stage.
I can't agree with you more. That is exactly what I think when I see these performances from so long ago... and the ridiculous criticism that was put on her.... it's so unbelievable to me... most people are afraid of true artists I think... they need surface, shallow bubblegum to feel comfortable with themselves... sad, she is remarkable.
@fem399 No you're wrong people criticise her becuase she cries for no reason and is just pretending to be emotional. if she wasn't crying so much and sucking idiots like you in, then people would see her music for what it really was.

Her singing is really expressive. Her piano playing is expressive as well. Combine them and you get magic. :)

Yes, this is her first show. The first full concert was that same month at the Troubador in Los Angeles.

Isn't this one of her first public performances...for record execs or something? If not the first? I know it's pretty early in her career. I love it.
