I think she or he(look to the big foots!!!) is using a 1920's hearing aid(In the early 1920s, people used hearing aids that you needed to hold up to your ears. Looks just like a cellphone.Oticon was founded in 1904 in Denmark by Hans Demant whose wife was hearing impaired) or a Lutz Ferrando Ear Trumpet and Etui(An early 20th century telescopic ear trumpet in its original crocodile skin etui). Google it and think yourself!
Of course the "time traveler" would not want anyone to know, so she/he would disguise it as an itch. If it is an itch, she/he was itching for a long time. What is convincing for the cellphone argument is that she/he seems to talk to it and smile and nod. It is odd how she/he disappears when she turns her/his head to the camera. At this point we cannot know what actually happened, and need to stop drawing conclusions on very very little evidence.
Her hands move a bit, and that's way to long to be scratching. Anyways when you get really close up there looks to be a black object in her hand, I'm sure her hand does not cast that much of a shadow. If you look closely while the screen is enlarged, you can pause as she walks by and see that her hand is wrapped around something tightly, and the end of something that looks like it has a screen. Now wither this is a cell from the future or from the past like an older Nokia is a question to me O_O I do believe however that she is talking into it. What makes this a great find and a good video, is the fact that no one can explain what is actually happening here. We know she can't be talking on a cell phone. Or is She? Hearing aid. before modern tech, hearing aids wouldnt actually fit in the ear (unless you had really large ears) and you actually had to hold it up to your ear. This lady, or man not real sure, was only tryin to listen in on hollywood and emiting "walla" which is a filler sound almost all movies use for background talking or acting.
Why are people seriously wondering about this? Couldn't this just be someone with a tooth ache walking down the street clutching their jaw in pain? Maybe they have sensitive ears and they're protecting themselves from some noise on the street? There are probably dozens of possibilities and we all know time travel is not one of them. Discovery Channel has lost some integrity be actually taking this seriously. If this film was "discovered" in the 1970s, no one would be suggesting time travel.

@lukacho5 here here i think she is carrying an object poss, a fone, 9 seconds she on walking across and although hand stays there fingers only move at the end. If it was scratching here head fingers would move all through the scene. She / He definately looks like she/he chatting on fone. Ive watched it quite a lot too and can only say its a fone. My point is that is much more likely that the video had been edited (incorrectly) than some "time traveller" had been caught on a roll of film.
I don't even believe "the woman" was using the hearing aid device, because she was clearly deep into conversation (body language tells us when one gets too focused on something while walking, one usually stops walking).
So, that's my point.
The woman's shadow was not edited correctly, giving away that this is not what the original is like.
@bloodsurf69 - I had this thought too. You then have to think outside the box and contemplate that another method of transmission was in action. If we REALLY push it tho, you have to ask why she would be talking into something she needs to hold. If she really was a time traveller, it would be more likely to be something discreet.

Actually this finger scratching explanation is void. What does that indeed have anything to do. Look late in the clip and you an object in the hand that casts a straight edged shadow. There is definitely an object in the hand.
This is probably the genius Tesla in drag. He showed you didn't need power lines to provide power to homes, and you don't need cell towers either to use a cell device, before they sent him away. Not good for business.

This would not have been seen on the VHS version as extras etc only really became popular when a digital format was popular. It's my understanding that this footage in particular is not of the movie, but of a documentary. Therefore it would have only seen the light of day when the original reel was remastered to DVD. To clarify, I do NOT think this is fake but still not sure what it is!

But in some way, it seems that this discussion would have made someone actually take a look at the original tape recording.. To see if it´s there or not

@TheConnyB - absolutely. We would need to ascertain what is happening in order to come to a conclusion. Based on what we're seeing, it most definitely looks like she's holding something up to her ear and talking into it. As you say however, it's totally inconclusive as to what that might be (if anything). Most of these questions should be directed at the studios however as the original film would show more detail. If they had the original documentary reel prior to editing, that would be perfect.

Of course the "time traveler" would not want anyone to know, so she/he would disguise it as an itch. If it is an itch, she/he was itching for a long time. What is convincing for the cellphone argument is that she/he seems to talk to it and smile and nod. It is odd how she/he disappears when she turns her/his head to the camera. At this point we cannot know what actually happened, and need to stop drawing conclusions on very very little evidence.

If you look closely while the screen is enlarged, you can pause as she walks by and see that her hand is wrapped around something tightly, and the end of something that looks like it has a screen. Now wither this is a cell from the future or from the past like an older Nokia is a question to me O_O I do believe however that she is talking into it. You can obviously see her lips moving as she turns to the camera. Just saying people. Believe what you see it's right there in front of you

Hearing aid. before modern tech, hearing aids wouldnt actually fit in the ear (unless you had really large ears) and you actually had to hold it up to your ear. This lady, or man not real sure, was only tryin to listen in on hollywood and emiting "walla" which is a filler sound almost all movies use for background talking or acting.

Why are people seriously wondering about this? Couldn't this just be someone with a tooth ache walking down the street clutching their jaw in pain? Maybe they have sensitive ears and they're protecting themselves from some noise on the street? There are probably dozens of possibilities and we all know time travel is not one of them. Discovery Channel has lost some integrity be actually taking this seriously. If this film was "discovered" in the 1970s, no one would be suggesting time travel.

there's DEFINATELY some thin black object in her/his hand. fact. you can see it as clear as day. you can even see the shadow cast on her/his cheek. i don't think photoshop existed in 1928, but also there were no mobile phone masts back then either! iv'e seen this clip on a higher resolution than on here and at the top of the "phone," where the antenna used to be on older phones, there is a strange triangular shape. could be a flesh & blood god (does walk different). time travel is less likely.

According to imdb.com the movie The Circus "Release Date:
1928 (Turkey)".In the year 1925 Western Electric Model 34A "Audiphone" Carbon Hearing Aid was on the market. It makes sense beacuse the device was released in year 1925. Three years later this movie was released. Plus if that really is a phone, how could he use it if at that time there was no signal, sattelites werent even invented at the time. Peace.

If it was scratching here head fingers would move all through the scene. She / He definately looks like she/he chatting on fone. Ive watched it quite a lot too and can only say its a fone. My point is that is much more likely that the video had been edited (incorrectly) than some "time traveller" had been caught on a roll of film.
I don't even believe "the woman" was using the hearing aid device, because she was clearly deep into conversation (body language tells us when one gets too focused on something while walking, one usually stops walking).
So, that's my point.
The woman's shadow was not edited correctly, giving away that this is not what the original is like.

This would not have been seen on the VHS version as extras etc only really became popular when a digital format was popular. It's my understanding that this footage in particular is not of the movie, but of a documentary. Therefore it would have only seen the light of day when the original reel was remastered to DVD. To clarify, I do NOT think this is fake but still not sure what it is!

@TheConnyB - absolutely. We would need to ascertain what is happening in order to come to a conclusion. Based on what we're seeing, it most definitely looks like she's holding something up to her ear and talking into it. As you say however, it's totally inconclusive as to what that might be (if anything). Most of these questions should be directed at the studios however as the original film would show more detail. If they had the original documentary reel prior to editing, that would be perfect.
