Besides showing how beautiful Verdi can be without screaming, pushing and pressing, Araiza`s first class interpretation demonstrates here a perfect line, a wide dynamic range, strong expression, richness of colors and a diameter that makes most so called Verdian voices to look rather small.
Love Zancanaro's voice! In various moments, he reminds me of such diverse baritones as Apollo Granforte, Richard Bonelli, Robert Merrill, & Ettore Bastianini. Gorgeous chiaroscuro color and firm, flexible line! Sorry I never heard him live.
Araiza sounds somewhat tired here. Heard him live in Mozart's SERAGLIO at the Met back in the '80's and liked him very much!
---> andrecardi ... when I read your comment it reminds me of Beckmesser but in a negative sense because he was in fact a singing teacher which I doubt about you when I read that all what you hear in this duet is a wobble (which I can not hear) instead of noticing that Francisco Araiza is giving here a master class in interpretetion and vocal abilities. By the way listening to his performances ten years later his voice sounds rather stronger and richer despite some unqualified comments
Del Monaco was referring to Jose Carreras when he mentioned "Nemorino in Egitto". Francisco Araiza`s rendition here is excellent!!! and shows a wonderful lyric interpretation of this opera. I find this comment nothing more than hair splitting just trying to judge something which goes beyond your skills. As a singer and singing teacher you should be able to notice the extraordinary phrasing and dinamic which Araiza gives to this role but perhaps you are just "one of those"
-->2ManyHighCs OK let`s apply common sense. You pretend to be a voice instructor; however your comment reflects lack of knowledge about voice and style. Besides showing how beautiful Verdi can be without screaming, pushing and pressing, Araiza`s first class interpretation demonstrates here a perfect line, a wide dynamic range, strong expression, richness of colors and a diameter that makes most so called Verdian voices to look rather small. Who`s ego is here over ruling? I guess yours.

"Guess" all you like. "Frankly Scarlet. I don't give a d-a-m-n." I would just think that any tenor who is the great Verdi singer you proclaim here would still be singing big Verdi roles at all the major opera houses in the world at the age of 58. ANYTIME Araiza wishes to come out of retirement, I will be the first in line to hear him. And that my dear friend is NOT pretending. I hope HE, not you, proves me wrong. I will be the first screamin BRAVO if it is deserved. AS I feel all would!
--> 2ManyHighCs... Again your ego seems to be over ruling! It looks you have lost the ground when you think anybody is supposed to prove anything to you. A low pee-on like me can not possibly have anything to say that would even BEGIN to enlighten someone of your enormous intellect. I remain humbled before you magnificence. Please forgive my momentary lapse into the delusion of thinking I know anything about voice. It will not happen again. I will leave you and your court and crawl back into my ignorance and obscurity and spare all of you of anymore of my insane rantings.
PRETEND? I sang with these two men! I LOVE their talent. Where were you two in 1991? I was on stage with them ! Araiza was the world's most unbelievable Tamino. His Rossini was amazing. He never should have taken on heavier roles. He was the greatest Bel Canto tenor alive then and he would still be singing today if he had remained true to his God-given voice and not pushed beyond it. I am only "Negative" because I still want to be able to hear him singing today as then.
Just say "I don'like it", but do not pretend to understand anything about voices especially in this very unique case of Francisco Araiza: how did he manage to sing Rossini so brilliantly with this heavy and dark voice? AMAZING!!! Just get it!!!
