When disco officially died in the early 80s, along with my friends from AIDS...then came Howard Jones. I don't know how I would have gotten through the 80s without him. He's a more synth-pop version of George Michael, but their lyrics, in most cases, are emotional equals. I'm quite surprised George hasn't covered Howard, and please, not WHAT IS LOVE? Good song, got burned out. Howard's gems are the pearls in the shell.
Both versions of this song are great. Phil Collins and the drums he revive it. I do not think that anyone else should ever sing this or try to with the exception of Rob Thomas. No one else could ever come close.
remember this from high school, heard it a few times on the radio in the last 20 yrs. Glad to find it a Youtube, big differnce between a singer and a storyteller.
You can look at the menu, but you just can't eat, you can feel the cushion, but you can't have a seat, you can dip your foot in the pool, but you cant have a swim, you can feel the punishment, but you cant commit the sin,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, and you want her? and she want's you..................... Nobody is to blame???????
Yep...love this song and Things Can Only Get Better. This guy still sounds as great as he did years ago. Duran Duran is another band that still has their classic sound, and haven't lost a thing.
From what he said at his 7/15/08 concert, the attraction/temptation has no blame attached - but if you choose to act on the temptation there are heavy consequences to deal with.
What do you think it means by 'No one ever is to blame?' At times I feel life is just like that, some things happen without being anyone's fault. At times though, I listen to this song and wonder if it's something a bit more sarcastic, perhaps no one is to blame when really the only person responsible is oneself.
I think in this case, it's the latter. The song is about being unfaithful and not taking responsibility for it. I think he's saying everyone has temptations, and for that reason, one might use the excuse "everyone else is tempted, so it's not my fault." That's my take, anyway.
