tears are the streams that make our grass green . our mother is the land of our deepest love .......... fhéadfadh tú lobhadh i hIfreann David Lloyd George & Winston Churchill ,
It is a shame on Britian that they executed Men who rebelled against us who wore uniforms and stood thier ground . I am British but I turn my head away from what happened on that day .
@bozimo1 actually in a kind of messed up way, it was the executions which led to widespread support for the rebellion, so who knows? may never have got freedom without it. can at least be content knowing these men knew exactly what awaited them and persevered regardless. hopefully i can be as courageous should i ever be tested in a similar fashion.
Oh they all knew that they were going to lose the Rising, even if the thing had been carried out without a hitch and they had succeeded in securing Dublin, they never would have made it out . The British would have burned the city to the ground rather than have the rebels secure a stronghold.
IIRC, both Connolly and Pearse are on record stating that they knew that they would be executed, and that their deaths would inspire the people rise in their place.

Pearse was a clown. Guys like Connolly and Griffiths knew where Ireland was going. Shame it never got there

Maxwell was a fool to martyr the heroes of 1916, yet thank God he did otherwise we wouldn't have an Irish Republic.
