@canibaldance I don't know where you heard that, he has nowhere near enough talent or the technical chops to cut it in Zappa's band. It's kind of insulting.....
@Serpchit Not really. Considering that by the age of 17 he was already quite renowned for being an extremely skilled and creative guitarist, and having studied guitar about 15 hours a day since age 9 or something, it shouldn't come as a surprise. IF you listen to his first two albums, you'll hear a lot of Zappa potential. He chose not to play with FZ band though, which was his decision and although it may seem disrespectful to the band,I think it was eventually better than playing a gig he hated
you got to be a shittard to ever say that a cover can be disrespectful. John Frusciante covered this sincerely without trying to copy Frank Zappa, which is the most important thing
@assfacedfucker But that was not Frusciante, that was stupid-ass Kiedis (he was stupid, at least in those days). I don't imagine Frusciante took that remark easily, either.
I'm not going to start an argument over this, because things are far from "well documented". I think John is a very respectful and humble guy, and would never disrespect Zappa or his band. For all I know, John did not want to be in Zappa's band, and it came as a last minute's decision, but he still had a lot of sympathy for the man's music. Zappa was also an important influence in John's guitar playing, and you can hear it more on his solo albums.

@reedmcdonald Well if you listen to how he said it, it kind of sounds like it was the first thing he could think of at that moment. Im sure he loves Zappa as much as anyone. Crazy times back then.

Yes, I'm quite aware that being able to notice that Mr Frusicante is in no way playing tightly or correctly, or singing in tune, reveals the fact that i fellate men.
Look below, I'm in a Zappa covers band myself and on a Music Technology course involving a lot of contemporary composition and composition and sound design for film. I'm also currently writing a solo EP.
you can show a monkey how to squeeze oranges to make juice, btu doesn`t mean it`s good... dude it doesn`t matter what school your father sent you to, or what classes you take, if you don`t have that creative spirit you might as well forget it...just look at Joe Satriani...all style no substance
I agree on the Satriani point, but that also applies to this video, theres no style or substance! As for my music, you cant really judge, having not heard it. The point is, that i am creative.
well man, I've seen the Peppers play 7 times, and each and every time, John Frusciante totally killed it and sent my ass back home with such colors and shapes in my mind, and after the 7th show, I thought to myself 'maybe he IS God' it's also a live situation, don't know if you play live or whatnot, but it's a completely different ballgame, and he's singing too, playing these complex riffs. plus john was 19 in this vid...cut the kid some slack! at least we agree about Satriani:)
Im not denying that Chillis are awesome, i love BSSM. And yeah i have played live plenty times. All im saying is, he should have realised how difficult it is to sing and play and how slack he did it in rehearsal, and he just shouldnt have bothered!
Eh, I agree with the whole style and substance thing with this and Satriani, but I hate bullshit excuses for giving shitty live performances. Ooo, singing and playing complex things at the same time. Good bands are good live. Mr. Bungle didn't fuck up live, Frank Zappa didn't sound like shit live.
@thekidwiththefa John Frusciante is amazing live, he was offered a spot in Frank Zappa's band but declined, this is his ego shining through in the 1990's, he was still new to being a "rock star" and he has to keep his "I don't give a fuck" mentality. I'm sure he can play it/sing it today no problem. The band didn't find their grove until the next album really, this whole era is living and playing ego.
I'm defending the man because today he is the greatest guitar player of our generation.
@Stealth401 Yeah, that's an old comment. I think I really began to appreciate Frusicante's work when I listened to some of his solo stuff. I wouldn't go so far as to say he's the greatest guitar player of our generation, but he is great.
You havnt heard my cover band. We dont just play the songs, we interpret some parts onto different instruments and link songs in unique ways and sometimes interject with other things. it takes a lot of planning.
i agree he did a bad job, but it actually is freaking hard to play guitar and sing at the same time, not to mention with such a difficult song like this one, it would have been pretty nice to see the whole band do a cover of it, it would have been heavy work, especially for the drummer
20 years from now Zappa's compositions will be a staple in university and that like that of Mozart will be recognized for his genius. It doesn't matter what these guys do off stage, but when they go onstage and show such disrespect to a well respected composer/musician such as Frank...well, just goes to show you their lack of character and understanding. Uncultured little dweebles.
Seriously dude, you have to learn to respect interpretations of a piece of music. Zappa was a huge influence on Frusciante in his early days; this is his homage to him.
Frusciante doesn't play like a technique extreme virtuoso, there is sloppiness in his playing (back then at least).
There is as much respect and admiration for Inca Roads in this interpretation as in any polished note-for-note version.
WOW you certainly don't seem to grasp this very well. If this isn't a mock of Zappa then then its something worse. And if this just an interpretation then it is shameful to Frusciante himself (his use of drugs?) regardless of the Zappa influence had on him; this doesn't reflect anything close to Zappa
This is no way to show respect unless you one is impaired. It seems it's quite clear to me this not the case, so it is obvious you are the one impaired.
I'm sorry you're taking this so hard, but you still have a lot to learn about art.
It's important to understand how drastic different styles can be, and how strange a piece can sound when it's interpreted by the opposite end of the spectrum.
Especially when it's a song you hold dear, it can be particularity painful (as I assume you are experiencing).
I suggest you look into Frusciante's material some before you stand by your comment.
@amart7 NO!!! You're WRONG!!! Music is not about creativity, music is about strict rules and regulations, otherwise we would end up like a bunch of hippies just playing whatever pops into our head... Is that what you want???
@MasterrFlamaster That's amazing that you couldn't depict sarcasm from the phrase "music is not about creativity, music is about strict rules and regulations", buddy! :D
I'm so glad john did not join zappa's band. Zappa is good, but john belongs in the RHCP and was meant for the RHCP. The original version sounds the same so I really do not understand these lame complaints. i would have recommended john to lower the distortion and volume but it still kicks ass, I like it.
hey could somone help me and tell me why anthony said "this is theo nly frank zappa song i allow to exist" does this mean his implying he doesnt like it?
This is disgraceful. I'm not sure to whom its worse...RHCP or Zappa.....
it looks like they had to take a break though...flea was getting an emergency massage done on stage - maybe a breather? either way, don't fill the space with a crappy rendition of Inca Roads. This is probably when frusciante's teeth started falling out. The Zappa Gods took this personally.
He didn't attend the final tryout. He showed up,but left before actually auditioning. If a tryout is considered 'being offered the job', then, yes, he and many others were 'offered the job'. If, as a musician, you choose to just do drugs, and play shitty music, you are, what is known as, 'a shitty musician'. Any one with a brain would give up drugs to play music with Zappa, if actually chosen that is. And if they actually care about the shit they put into the mainstream. RHCP suck indefatigably.
i have to disagree with you completely on what you said. we agree with what you said when it comes to playing shitty music but fuck off. john isn't a technical master or anything like steve vai nor does he play really any crazy cool licks etc but hell man he is dedicated to what he does and can write some pretty mean guitar to Anthony's melodies. And you cannot compare RHCP to ZAPPA so different. one is bone crushing mayhem funk and the other is just super awesome, both r great!
so what if he did that, that doesn't make hime a shitty musician. He was only 18 at the time, he's a completely different person now. So by your logic is Hendrix a shitty musican? is Kurt Cobain a shitty musican? are countless amazing jazz players shitty musicians. I think not. RHCP definately do not suck. They've developed and changed lot since they began yet still kept and gained fans. Just becuase you don't like them doesn't mean that they suck.
Before frusciante joined rhcp he had a chance to play in zappa band instead steve vai, but zappa doesn't allowed to take drugs in his band so john decided to join rhcp
Sure he had the chance to audition, but I doubt he would have made it. Sure he's great and all, but I hardly doubt he would've made it. This bit here is pretty crappy, but at least John has excellent influence and whatnot.
come on. why does everybody gotta hate. frusciante is a phenomenal guitar player. frank zappa is a musical genius however and this is his song. im not gonna knock frusciante like everyone else cuz the fact that he digs zappa makes him cool with me. but again this song is and remains frank zappas. haha
this is awful, and kiedis is a whore for saying that's "the only zappa song he allows to exsist". but in case some of you have never even seen one of zappa's live shows, even on DVD, frusicante can play very similar to him. that's exactly something you would see at a zappa show, possibly on a different instrument. He could have easily made it in zappa's band, he is a better musician than most of you if not all of you guys, most of you probably don't even play an instrument and never could.
because when you play less notes, you put more emotion into each notes. when you're sweep picking and tapping, how much energy and emotion are you really putting into each of those notes? granted, it could be a lot; however, it doesn't really sound like it, IMO. it's not my cup of tea. watch some frusciante live solos, he seems to let lose more live. i'll leave it up to someone else to reccomend you songs, i've nearly ran out of space with this comment.
wrong my friend. if you can't hear the emotin in zappas work you are deaf to emotion. i luv jf but at that time he was not mature enough nor talented enough to play with zappa. and wat is that dude doin to fleas arm?
flea got cramp during that show and so the guy had to come on a couple of times to help relax and massage the muscles in the lower arm. if u watch at the end of the JF Tiny Dancer video from this show u can see flea react to his cramp right at the end of it.
this is genious

@thekidwiththefa John Frusciante is amazing live, he was offered a spot in Frank Zappa's band but declined, this is his ego shining through in the 1990's, he was still new to being a "rock star" and he has to keep his "I don't give a fuck" mentality. I'm sure he can play it/sing it today no problem. The band didn't find their grove until the next album really, this whole era is living and playing ego.
I'm defending the man because today he is the greatest guitar player of our generation.
Stealth401 1 year ago 2
@Stealth401 Yeah, that's an old comment. I think I really began to appreciate Frusicante's work when I listened to some of his solo stuff. I wouldn't go so far as to say he's the greatest guitar player of our generation, but he is great.
thekidwiththefa 1 year ago
Sorry bout a cover band isn't that creative at all?
explosivetoast 2 years ago
You havnt heard my cover band. We dont just play the songs, we interpret some parts onto different instruments and link songs in unique ways and sometimes interject with other things. it takes a lot of planning.
jaseonthebass 2 years ago
i agree he did a bad job, but it actually is freaking hard to play guitar and sing at the same time, not to mention with such a difficult song like this one, it would have been pretty nice to see the whole band do a cover of it, it would have been heavy work, especially for the drummer
rodcrippler 2 years ago
Agreed. He shouldnt have tried singing it at the same time.
Im in a zappa covers band an we will be giving this a go sometime after xmas. If we get a recording, i will post it here!

That's incredible guitar playing and singing....And i'm aware that some people are very close minded when it comes to Zappa's music.. tsk tsk
michyswah 2 years ago
20 years from now Zappa's compositions will be a staple in university and that like that of Mozart will be recognized for his genius. It doesn't matter what these guys do off stage, but when they go onstage and show such disrespect to a well respected composer/musician such as Frank...well, just goes to show you their lack of character and understanding. Uncultured little dweebles.
guitarran 2 years ago
Aha ha.. ha... Frusciante... uncultured.....
BAHAHAHAHHAHAH
Seriously dude, you have to learn to respect interpretations of a piece of music. Zappa was a huge influence on Frusciante in his early days; this is his homage to him.
Frusciante doesn't play like a technique extreme virtuoso, there is sloppiness in his playing (back then at least).
There is as much respect and admiration for Inca Roads in this interpretation as in any polished note-for-note version.
amart7 2 years ago 5
WOW you certainly don't seem to grasp this very well. If this isn't a mock of Zappa then then its something worse. And if this just an interpretation then it is shameful to Frusciante himself (his use of drugs?) regardless of the Zappa influence had on him; this doesn't reflect anything close to Zappa
This is no way to show respect unless you one is impaired. It seems it's quite clear to me this not the case, so it is obvious you are the one impaired.
This simple is unacceptable.
guitarran 2 years ago
I'm sorry you're taking this so hard, but you still have a lot to learn about art.
It's important to understand how drastic different styles can be, and how strange a piece can sound when it's interpreted by the opposite end of the spectrum.
Especially when it's a song you hold dear, it can be particularity painful (as I assume you are experiencing).
I suggest you look into Frusciante's material some before you stand by your comment.
I won't be responding to further comments,
Thanks.

this was just a joke cover actually, obviously

@amart7 NO!!! You're WRONG!!! Music is not about creativity, music is about strict rules and regulations, otherwise we would end up like a bunch of hippies just playing whatever pops into our head... Is that what you want???

haha this is a good effort, quite funny
though whoever said it sounds exactly the same as the original is an idiot
john is absolutely amazing but frank and everyone in his band were musical prodigies
margyspread 2 years ago
I'm so glad john did not join zappa's band. Zappa is good, but john belongs in the RHCP and was meant for the RHCP. The original version sounds the same so I really do not understand these lame complaints. i would have recommended john to lower the distortion and volume but it still kicks ass, I like it.

you are so wrong, you need to listen to more types of music and a little less popular stuff too

anniegog 2 years ago
This is disgraceful. I'm not sure to whom its worse...RHCP or Zappa.....
it looks like they had to take a break though...flea was getting an emergency massage done on stage - maybe a breather? either way, don't fill the space with a crappy rendition of Inca Roads. This is probably when frusciante's teeth started falling out. The Zappa Gods took this personally.
eskimoposh 2 years ago
He didn't attend the final tryout. He showed up,but left before actually auditioning. If a tryout is considered 'being offered the job', then, yes, he and many others were 'offered the job'. If, as a musician, you choose to just do drugs, and play shitty music, you are, what is known as, 'a shitty musician'. Any one with a brain would give up drugs to play music with Zappa, if actually chosen that is. And if they actually care about the shit they put into the mainstream. RHCP suck indefatigably.
RDZNL1111 2 years ago
i have to disagree with you completely on what you said. we agree with what you said when it comes to playing shitty music but fuck off. john isn't a technical master or anything like steve vai nor does he play really any crazy cool licks etc but hell man he is dedicated to what he does and can write some pretty mean guitar to Anthony's melodies. And you cannot compare RHCP to ZAPPA so different. one is bone crushing mayhem funk and the other is just super awesome, both r great!
prjctcivilian 2 years ago 4
actually, Anthony creates the lyrics off of John's melodies. Thats what the band said in one of the interviews.
in that case, John is even more amazing
CYCanaan 2 years ago
so what if he did that, that doesn't make hime a shitty musician.
BillyCorganlikespie 2 years ago 2
RHCP is good and all, but Frank Zappa is an absolute genius.

the chili peppers are musical genius. im not saying zappa isnt great as well but never compare the chilis with somebody like that.
MrRedhotchiliquentin 2 years ago
Before frusciante joined rhcp he had a chance to play in zappa band instead steve vai, but zappa doesn't allowed to take drugs in his band so john decided to join rhcp

Nice try. Jesus what a noob. It takes some more skills to play Zappa's music. This is pathetic and 'specially what that foolish leadsinger says.

Does Flea have tendonitis or a Repetitive Strain Injury? I've never seen someone getting their arm massaged on stage before.
voodoochili12 2 years ago
Sure he had the chance to audition, but I doubt he would have made it. Sure he's great and all, but I hardly doubt he would've made it. This bit here is pretty crappy, but at least John has excellent influence and whatnot.
thekidwiththefa 3 years ago 3
No, he was offered the job, at the same time as the chili peppers. He declined due to Zappa's straight edge policy
DominicAMG 2 years ago
This is Frusciante, not "Frusicante" X-D
Peperonauti 3 years ago 6
come on. why does everybody gotta hate. frusciante is a phenomenal guitar player. frank zappa is a musical genius however and this is his song. im not gonna knock frusciante like everyone else cuz the fact that he digs zappa makes him cool with me. but again this song is and remains frank zappas. haha

haz127 3 years ago 2
this is awful, and kiedis is a whore for saying that's "the only zappa song he allows to exsist". but in case some of you have never even seen one of zappa's live shows, even on DVD, frusicante can play very similar to him. that's exactly something you would see at a zappa show, possibly on a different instrument. He could have easily made it in zappa's band, he is a better musician than most of you if not all of you guys, most of you probably don't even play an instrument and never could.
calvinlnakf 3 years ago
easily made it in? steve vai barely made it in what makes you think john could have gone in easy

Now that's funny.
What's funnier is Fruciante horribly butchering it. None of them could play Zappa.

why did he say that? does he not like frank zappa?

zappa is musical genius. frusicante is a hack. your right none of those other "musicians" will come even close to zappa.

Wh00terman 3 years ago 2
because when you play less notes, you put more emotion into each notes. when you're sweep picking and tapping, how much energy and emotion are you really putting into each of those notes? granted, it could be a lot; however, it doesn't really sound like it, IMO. it's not my cup of tea. watch some frusciante live solos, he seems to let lose more live. i'll leave it up to someone else to reccomend you songs, i've nearly ran out of space with this comment.

flea got cramp during that show and so the guy had to come on a couple of times to help relax and massage the muscles in the lower arm. if u watch at the end of the JF Tiny Dancer video from this show u can see flea react to his cramp right at the end of it.
