Nice gymnastics but best kept in the practise room... Kudos for the hard work and for trying to play musically, bravo ! But on the bass it does sound like an exercise, nothing more.
To me it doesn't matter what instrument(s) a piece of music is written for. The goal of music is to bring joy to people, no matter, where they're from. Music is the only language that everybody can understand but everybody understands it a bit differently on the other hand and there is no wrong and right among this issue. Due to bass it gets a completely different character. because the sound is a bit thinner but stronger. But the cello/violin version's great as well.Thumps up for this vid ;)
I destroy the art because i said i never liked the sound of a bass as a solo instrument?
or because I noticed that the intonation of the performance was suspect
or because I find playing the thing at a professional level to be too stressful? after all the kind of concentration it takes to play in tune in time and with some modicum of musicality means that it is often not fun at all.
I have quit. But i am no office jockey, but a hard labourer, cutting wood and carpentry
@Strefanash well, sadly yes. the greatest human beings on earth don't specialise on any one thing. Neither do they only use the bass as a continuo in a baroque ensemble or 8 of them in a great symphony. Simandl will steal your bass and burn it for saying that. So will Bach and Beethoven.
As for all this talk about the piece not being appropraite to doble bass...folks gotta realize that music is music. The musician works by manifesting their musical sensibilities, on their instrument, whatever that is. You can't ask a good player to learn violin to play a violin partita. This gentleman's phrasing and musicality are brilliant and evocative. What more could you ask for?
@ceebass I hate to disagree…(actually I like to disagree). Of course it depends on the technic of the player, but Bach wrote this pieces for cello and the majority of them sound forced on the bass or "like the bass player is struggling to keep up". I'm a bass player and I'm not judging this performance. It takes a lot of practice and guts to play this pieces on bass but I'm just saying they might sound better on a cello. There's a lot of other bass music.
@eliseoborrero Back wrote this piece for violin actually :) but ye, i play violin, but any violin song can be played by a cello or double bass, but to make it sound good, the bass or cello player must add more into it to create a good version for themselves, so this bass player has done very well with his phrasing and keeping it at a nice tempo for a bass. thumbs up for the vid btw
@eliseoborrero that is so false. this was not written for cello at all. it was written for VIOLIN. and bach also transcribed it for organ as the sinfonia to cantata #29
@colinmacknight that is exactly my point. it wasn't written for bass. some violin pieces work for bass and some sound forced. anyway that's what I think and there's freedom of speech in this country.
Super job. P.S. Bach's music belongs to whomevers spirit he touches and whomever can play it. The individuals voice is irrelivent. If he (Bach) touches your spirit, sing on!
Great job, but this is unnatural sounding for the double bass, it is too high to sound like Bach should sound. You've done a commendable job, but I'd much rather here a violin version.
I play the cello, and that's what I was thinking. This song belongs on the cello. Throughout it's entirety, the song seemed to stay in the cello's comfortable middle range, which is like asking a bass singer to sing a soprano part. Sure, it's an achievement, but it doesn't sound quite right.

intonation wobbles from time to time. I used to be bass player myself, in a symphony orchestra
this is not what a bass is for, the tone is too gross and course.
to me, when I can be bothered playing, which is not often, a bass is the continuo in a baroque ensemble or 8 of us in a great symphnoy

@Strefanash then it's time for you to quit being a 'musician' and get an office job. we don't need more stiff 'musicians' to destroy the art.
