I was actually looking for a vid of Sherlock playing violin, but I am so happy to have stumbled across your video. Thanks much for introducing me to this vocalist!
"...She would have graced any assembly in the world. Who could have imagined that so rare a flower would grow from such a root and in such an atmosphere? Women have seldom been an attraction for me, for my brain has always governed my heart, but I could not look upon her perfect, clear-cut face, with all the soft freshness of the Downlands in her delicate colouring, without realising that NO young man would cross her path unscathed."
@catherinespark In Victorian London, showing emotions was considered vulgar and not gentlemen-like. It was a culture that taught prudery and restraint.
@Sshelly34213 That, in my opinion, is one of the things that makes the Sherlock Holmes books so unusual: For me, underneath the action and intrigue there is a deep platonic affectionate tone and spiritual side that makes the stories remarkable even for today, let alone Victorian times! But in the books Watson often seems struck by Holmes's coldness as well, so perhaps Holmes did come across as colder to most even by Victorian standards.
@catherinespark Yes but cold does not necessarily make him an aspie. He's just cold...lol there are tons of characters in literature that are just cold people. There is a bit of intrigue there because we see Holmes as purely logical. There really is no reason for Holmes to be otherwise, there are no real tragic occasions that Holmes and Watson have shared together. So what need was there to come off otherwise?
Ich hab das Lied immer so aus zufall im Radio gehört & fand das voll toll & ich geh das jetzt ein .. wow das lied hat ja sogar ne geschichte so.. Ich mag das lied voll :)
At last he found his only woman, THE WOMAN, Irene Adler, but that relationship was doomed to failure from the beggining. Fistly, she was already engaged with another man, secondly, they never met each other face to face for longer and had a chance to talk! (Shame, I bet anything they'd became a wonderful couple) Holmes was fascinated by Irene, he admired her mind and wiliness, but they never got a chance to be together.
Beautiful vid! And the song is exactly about them! Very touching... 5/5 & favourites ^^ Btw, in my opinion, Holmes never REALLY fell in love - but that don't mean he didn't notice women! He just didn't find that one, that proper, who would be worthy his love. Sounds like vanity? Yes, but remember, Holmes had his right to think that way, he had a wonderful mind, he was a versatile person and he surpassed tons of people in inteligence, so no one can blame him for this).
A scandal in Bohemia is one of my favourites. The misfortune of Holmes, after having been deceived by an 'inferior sex', is comical, but also beautiful. The song's mood, for me, does not really correspond with the quaint life of Holmes; but a lovely idea, regardless.
Yes, I agree. It's a really nice story, quite different from the others as it shows Holmes in a tricky, uncommon situation. But... oh well,... why not playing around with romance a little? ;)
Obwohl eine Reihe netter Schauspielerinnen bei der Serie mitwirkten, war doch Irene Adler die eindrucksvollste von allen - vielleicht weil sie SH am Ende doch noch um den Finger gewickelt hat? ;-)
my opinion is that holmes spent all his love on a family member or teenage love but then they died or he was rejected so he vowed never to love again. JB's version of holmes clerly shows the conflicting emotions of love and sadness
The thing is that Holmes HAS to feel, everyone feels emotions otherwise you'd literally be autistic...
Holmes must at least speculate about the idea of loving someone if not then he probably did and was hurt by it.
Maybe not by a romantic type of love, perhaps his mother died and it haunted him? I find that a lot of the time matters like not showing your emotions comes back to family members parents in specific.
@Sshelly34213 Some people are literally autistic and Holmes may actually be one of them (google 'Sherlock Holmes autism autistic asperger syndrome'), but even autistic people feel emotions - they just don't show them normally or recognise that they are feeling them in the same way as most people.
But there is simply no evidence to support the idea that Holmes has asperger's syndrome. 1. The writer never intended him to be that way, he based him off of a real man who did not have asperger's syndrome. 2. We don't know that he can't "show" emotions," only that he appears very calculating, logical, and unfeeling. When you're in a professional situation, usually that occurs. He may very well CHOOSE to appear so.
@Sshelly34213 I think it's a matter of individual opinion, both on whether Holmes has the traits (intended or not) and on what ACD intended. I agree that ACD said he was inspired to build a man around Joseph Bell's arts of observation and deduction, but whether he based Holmes's personality on Bell any further than that less clear. But I'm sorry if I misunderstood - I thought you were saying autistics couldn't feel and were absolutely emotionless! But I know now you didn't mean it like that.
@catherinespark Well...again i doesn't matter if one has "similar traits" with a certain psychological disorder. If someone is charming, does that automatically make them a sociopath? Asperger's syndrome was not even discovered until the 40s, it didn't have a name...so why would Doyle create a character with a disorder that wasn't even known at the time?
@Sshelly34213 I quite like trying to infer things from the canonical details that perhaps ACD hadn't intended. I agree with you there's no hard and fast evidence as to Holmes having any kind of autistic or other disorder. However there are other things besides his apparent lack of emotion that could indicate it. E.g. his fixation on details and literal manner (even with Watson casually), possible obsessions (evidence being monographs), hyper-acute senses and disorganised eating and sleeping.
@catherinespark Well...again, there is no lack of emotion because we're not in his head...
Other than that...there's not much else we can deduce. We don't KNOW that he sees everything in a logical manner, only that he comes off as someone who does.
It's possible to have all of those traits and not have asperger's syndrome, HSP have hyper sensitivity and they're aspies. I eat 1 meal a day and sleep very irregularly. When you don't have a normal routine, that happens.
@Sshelly34213 Oh and also I think you are right that were he to choose to show emotions he could, given his acting abilities, but also his ability to soothe a witness or charm a person into telling him what he needs.
@catherinespark Anyway, the idea of Holmes having Asperger's syndrome is a claim, purely that. So why should I believe a claim someone just made up one day on their day off? Literary hacks say that about every character who is intelligent, logical, and, cold. Oh, that and he's gay. It's always at the same time.
I choose to see it as a claim that cannot be backed up by anything other than circumstantial evidence.
@Sshelly34213 Thanks for discussing with me - discussing such points is always interesting to me and I see your points. I too get annoyed when people insist on neurological and sexuality 'diagnoses' for him. I suppose we will just have to agree to disagree on some matters of opinion! I personally think Holmes has many of the traits but, as you say, we can't know, and as he says in the book when he puts forward an idea that cannot be verified as certain, 'well well, I don't insist upon it'!
@Sshelly34213 Sounds like the best way to look at it. I have noticed that trying to argue 'diagnoses' like that seriously, rather than just observing and discussing, can almost lead to possessiveness and defensiveness from the parties arguing the point. As an Aspie myself it's fun to see a character who appears to display some similarities, but...well...for whatever reason (if any) he's just Holmes and is the way he is!
@catherinespark Hey, I get that side of it. I often am pleased when I can make connections to characters as well. We all want to share something in common with them because they mean a lot to us.
omg...the look in his eyes as he plays the violin! This is beautiful, but I truly don't believe that he 'loved' Irene. She showed him that not all women were stupid. He admired her intelligence and bravery....that's all.
I agree, I've always felt that Watson was reflecting his own wishful feelings in regards to his thoughts on Holmes and Irene Adler,
(plus Watson did have a wife at the time remember)
IMHO the simple reason Holmes wanted that photo of Irene was so that he would see through any disguise of hers and recognize her instantly if they ever encountered each other again.
No he kept it because she defeated him, the only woman to ever do so. That's the one thing that probably means something to Holmes, to be able to outwit him.
Holmes is a master of deduction, he remembers every detail, he doesn't need a picture to remember anything...
Gorgeous edition. But is kind strange to see a so called sherlockian "in love". It do not make sense. I'm sorry, I don't believe there were any thing about love between Holmes and Adler, possible just attraction.
Yeah, I understand that very well. I thought the same in my first sherlockian years but over the time I changed my mind gradually. And the wonderful portrayal by Jeremy Brett definitively convinced me: Holmes has a greater heart than he shows.
So with regard to Irene I think love is possible, not THE great love but more than just attraction.
where can I download this song? would it be on BearShare?
