  • His voice was wonderful--no woner he was a rival of Bing Crosby, such a great loss when Russ Columbo died,

  • my great grandpa love the song

  • I like this. The tunes were sweeter a long time ago. Before they put bad language and awful/ or no melodies in them like todays lousy drivel.

  • @avdreader1 sorta like having hot delicious poopsex with straight men?

  • I have a lot of Russ Columbo 78s . Just love him

I think Bing would not have been so big if Russ had lived longer.

  • I have a lot of Russ Columbo 78s . Just love him

  • every dance ended with this song in the 40s.

  • Don't think any reference to the hit parade without Al Bowlly could have any substance because, with respect, Al was better than Russ Columbo, Bing Crosby and Rudy Valllee.

Russ Columbo was referred to the Canadian Crosby. He was good, but not, in my view, as good as the original Crosby, and certainly not as good as Al Bowlly - no one was!

  • @paulkate72 - A kind YT-er set me straight on this: Russ Columbo wasn't the Canadian Crosby - DickTodd was.

    Many thanks to Marty9020.

  • Rudy Vallee's version in The Palm Beach Story is the best I've ever heard of this song...

  • My mother used to sing this to me when I was very little, many many years ago. And I sang it to my kids.

From those of us who were, once, somebody's sweetheart, and had sweethearts of our own, thanks for posting this.

  • Russ, Bing, and Rudy all up at that big Caesar's Lounge in the Beyond trying to outmellow one another, and add Arthur Prysock and Barry White and Jean Sablon for a sextet, and it boggles the imagination to think what it must sound like. And the special guest is Jim Reeves.

  • The master still soothes. What a voice. Thanks for posting.

  • Such a beautiful voice. His death broke the heart of Carole Lombard...

  • Marvelous!

  • "Rudy Vallee's self-parodying performance (serenading Claudette Colbert) in "Palm Beach Story" sparked a 40's revival." Good description. The movie (1942) aired on AMC about 10 yrs ago. I liked that part well enough to put onto videotape. He singing to a string orchestra on the ground floor terrace, while she's in her suite above "gettin' it h'on" with her new lover, Joel McGrey (or... that's the way it'd prob be if they did a remake today. ...Though there is a kiss at the end.) Great rendition

  • Lovely song. I think Columbo was the best crooner.

  • great lyrics for its time

  • For its time?

    For any time!

At least better then 99% of the lyrics we get with modern songs these days.

  • Incomparable Columbo! Thank you.

  • a fine rendition of a classic song. sung by the best who went too soon. so sad. a truly wonderful voice from one so young.captivating i would say.

  • Hi

This was a signature song of Al Bowlly in the UK who was killed in London by a bomb in his flat in 1941 - a sad loss to us all.

    Regards

    Richard UK

  • Beautiful........

  • 10/10.

    Many Thanks

  • Who was FIRST to use the early form of scat in their singing? Did Columbo copy Crosby or Crosby copy Columbo? I don't recall ever hearing Rudy Vallee who was very popular during that period using this scat. Thank you.

  • Whow! He sounds great , America lost a great crooner,

  • Thanks for this nice Russ Columbo recording which is well recorded. The Victor sides seem to have a lot better sound quality capturing Columbo's voice really clear as opposed to those last 4 recordings he made for Brunswick on August 31, 1934 in Los Angeles. I have one of the titles from that session on my page. It is "I See Two Lovers" . Does anyone have a 78 release for that recording? Interesting the 4 Brunswick titles were recorded only a few days before he died.

  • To me it is merely glorious. I am rested asleep so peacefully. Joyfully, Tyler Lord Hamilton

  • this reminds me of elvis doing his gospel, and a bit more loose (i.e. song's flow is more important than vocal persona.) gorgeous stuff.

  • I've always been suspect of his early "accidental" death. I've always thought there was more to it and possibly a murder........(over lover of course)...I have a lot of this guy on C/D ..........He was so great & very handsome in film, on the air, and on records......Crosby copied him a lot..

  • I have a nice copy of this, but did not post because this was a very good clean post. Now if it were noisy or done on a talking machine and I thought mine was an improvement,I might upload mine.I wondered why my search did not turn up the flip side"Time On My Side",so I uploaded that.

  • Thanks, Victrolaman--for that posting. Russ didn't live to record that much material, glad so much is available here on YT.

    Regards,

    -RR

  • Το τραγούδι?Μοναδικό.

  • Very nice, thanks to youtube Russ will live forever with new fans, do you also have his wonderful hard to find version of "Loveletters in the sand"?

  • Thanks! No, I don't have Columbo's "Love Letters"--but I'd also love to see in posted here on YT... ;)

    Best,

    -RR

  • Don't know if you were aware but this song has been posted several times already on YT. I try not to duplicate them since there seems to be an understanding among some of the YT posters not to duplicate.

  • Really, where has this been previously posted? It comes up on no search.

Anyway, there are many overlapping viewer groups on YouTube--I frankly see no problem in posting public domain material in a format which reaches new and different audiences.

No single setting of popular or classical music should be seen as definitive, exclusive or permanent. It belongs to all of us--hence "public domain".

    Thanks.

  • I frankly don't have a problem with it. It had been brought to my attention by several YT people in the past. I assumed that there was some type of unwritten agreement not to duplicate songs. It is not hard to find the multiple copies of songs that have been posted. If the presentation is different it makes it more entertaining and see no reason why another copy can not be posted.

So don't get me wrong, I enjoy the music you have been posting.

  • Oops, victormonarch has this posted and I believe mickeyclark too

  • @RReady555

I've never seen this on you tube before and I like your post.

    Please don't take it down.

    Thank you!

  • I am not a Bing fan. I think he stole Russ's style....That said, people will send me hate comments. :(((

I love this song and I love Russ Columbo, not only was he drop dead gorgeous but he had a great voice. When he sings, I literally "MELT"! Thank you RR for this GEM!

  • Glad you appreciate Russ, genia...with my Vallee Rally just about done I may yet serve up YT a Columbo Gumbo. ;)

He had an uncanny understanding of a microphone's "Sweet Spot"--and old studio sound engineer in L.A. told me Columbo was legendary for hitting his mark.

  • Hi Genia I only discovered this now. Here's what I read from Rudy's Bio "Let The Chips Fall" "After Columbo excused himself Con Conrad confided to me that when they came east by train (Columbo and Conrad) they had brought with them a portable phonograph which worked by cranking it and all the Crosby records they could find. during the trip they played these records over and over again so that Columbo could get every trick and nuance of the Crosby delivery. I could quote more.

  • Thank you Phredl for that info. Since you are our resident expert, I believe you.

Russ sure was a quick study...I love his voice and his good looks. I'm not an expert, I only know that I think he sounds better than Bing. I guess it is my taste..I feel Bing does not compare to Russ. Too bad he had to meet such a tragic end and for what it is worth I don't believe that match light on the handle of a gun story. :-)

  • I like Columbo voice also and he was certainly better looking. Rudy felt upon meeting him that he appeared much older than reported, more like 30. There are too many conflicting stories about what happened when he died. No one will ever know the truth. It was a tragedy.

  • Thank you again, Phredl, You are our Darling Database just chucked full of info. We are very fortunate to have you! :-)
