I'm sure there's still great music around, the video above is testimony to that. I ask you this though, how many people do you think have heard of this song compared to Justin Bieber's latest single?
It's called an add9 chord. Amadd9, for example, is just an A minor triad (root + minor 3rd + perfect 5th) with an added 9th. If you were to make it Am9, then you'd play root + minor 3rd + perfect 5th (optional) + minor 7th + major 9th. However, in an Asus2, you'd play the root + 9th (or 2nd; depending on which octave) + perfect 5th.
It's just a matter of terminology. It doesn't matter. What @magicofmayhem said in his comment is actually true.
@AlbertoLaiho It's not a matter of terminology, it's a matter of function. It's not a 9chord w/o a 7(or implied). If you were to play an Asus2 up an 8va, it's still the two w/o the 7 if you're analyzing it. A 9chord implies a 9 of 7. Take for example a F#9 chord. If you block a dom. 7 chord w/ the G# up the octave, you have a very distinctive sound. If you take the Eb (7) out, you do not get nearly the same effect. Function.Is.Everything. Terminology means almost nothing.
Oh yes, I agree with you. I am by no means saying that they sound the same or that they have the same functionality. I was just pointing out the terminology for the different uses of the 9th (or 2nd, depending on how you want to call it and the context in which that note is played). I'm only talking about the names of the chords (which are rather irrelevant, really). But, technically, a 9chord w/o the 7th, is called add9. It does NOT sound the same as an actual 9chord (continued...)
(...continued) But it DOES, in fact, include a 9th in it. Like I said, it does not sound the same as 9chord WITH the 7th.
We both arrived at the same point, too, which is that terminology is useless. These names are pointless when it comes to the music itself. Different notes sound differently when put together with other notes, regardless of their names, and the name that said group of notes receives, and that's about it.
Sorry, I didn't mean to say that terminology is useless. Just that it's irrelevant when it comes to the music itself. It's just a reference so you can produce that sound again in the future.
@magicofmayhem That's not right though is it? Certainly his 'hits' have familiar progressions, but the same could be said of some of Antoine's songs - admittedly I haven't heard many. His album tracks are cut from the same cloth as this, I promise you. :)
@magicofmayhem FYI, andy uses color chords just as much as Antoine. The difference is the complex rhythyms. Andy's song "When She Cries" is centered around the Cadd9 chord.
@magicofmayhem It can't be major and a suspended chord. If it's suspended, that implies that there is a second or a fourth in place of the third, hence the feeling of suspension. It would be an G6add4 chord.
This guy is so good it just makes me want to pile all of my guitars in the front yard, douse them all in gas, and lite a bonfire. I'm good, but this guy is the exception rather than the rule.

@KrummyBear
AlbertoLaiho 3 months ago
@AlbertoLaiho It's not a matter of terminology, it's a matter of function. It's not a 9chord w/o a 7(or implied). If you were to play an Asus2 up an 8va, it's still the two w/o the 7 if you're analyzing it. A 9chord implies a 9 of 7. Take for example a F#9 chord. If you block a dom. 7 chord w/ the G# up the octave, you have a very distinctive sound. If you take the Eb (7) out, you do not get nearly the same effect. Function.Is.Everything. Terminology means almost nothing.

@KrummyBear
AlbertoLaiho 3 months ago
@KrummyBear

@KrummyBear
Sorry, I didn't mean to say that terminology is useless. Just that it's irrelevant when it comes to the music itself. It's just a reference so you can produce that sound again in the future.
And sorry for the comment spree!

@magicofmayhem That's not right though is it? Certainly his 'hits' have familiar progressions, but the same could be said of some of Antoine's songs - admittedly I haven't heard many. His album tracks are cut from the same cloth as this, I promise you. :)

@magicofmayhem He seems to quote Andy McKee (Nakagawa-san) though at 2:22 - even in the same key :)
