...next episode: So they helped us escape these catastrophes and further manipulated our DNA to serve their breeding needs. In 2012 the "good" ETs will try to exterminate us once more. The "bad" ETs won't let this happen, they want us lab rats for breeding. So the good turn out bad, the bad good and both manipulate us. And we leave in our oblivion thinking we are a superior race and ETs don't exist. It's epic!
Of course, those myths all have a different timeline and so that probably doesn't make much sense unless it was an oral history passed down from one specific event...
Anyway... truthfully, I'm skeptical of all of this stuff, but from a strictly sci-fi standpoint, it's pretty interesting to make your own mythology around this extra element. I do like how at the end of this episode even the "experts" can't agree... Tsoukalos responding to the other guys' ideas with this "You're nuts!" attitude.
These "gods" said, here do this... take all the animals (known to you and so a much smaller number than every species) build a boat, take refuge and when things calm down, use birds to test that the waters have receded. All the fill in stuff, like the Hmong belief that refuge was taken in a giant pumpkin, could just be interpretation of things that were beyond contemporary understanding.
So nobody really says it here, but couldn't the argument be made that all flood myths are related; that each pocket of civilization was warned on an individual level and so you have 35+ flood myths from around the world that share some incredible similarities.

It's been discovered recently, that the Mayan calendar was translated incorrectly. The researcher that translated it could be off in the hundreds of years. This would explain why the calendar start date pre-dates the Mayan civilization. It probably didn't. This also means that the end date could have already happened, or it won't happen for another hundred years or so.

In my opinion, the 13 month calendars were much more accurate. 13 months, 28 days per month, every month started on Monday, ended on Sunday, following the complete lunar cycle.

It's been discovered recently, that the Mayan calendar was translated incorrectly. The researcher that translated it could be off in the hundreds of years. This would explain why the calendar start date pre-dates the Mayan civilization. It probably didn't. This also means that the end date could have already happened, or it won't happen for another hundred years or so.

I've researched the Maya calendar days, and it shows that it's not purely a 365 day year. What I'd really like to know, is how they determined when it started and ends.

Is it absurd to say that the calendar doesn't end? It'd just start a whole new cycle. If the Maya thought the world was going to end, why would they have made predictions of events that happen well after that date? Just in case of a 'oops, sorry guys, our math was off'?

They were smart in that regard, sure, but this is still a civilization that would sacrifice humans and discard the carcasses up stream from their water source and wonder why they got sick drinking the water. Even the common cold would be devastating to an ancient culture. On top of that, there were skeletons that showed signs of malnourishment, which means food ended up becoming an issue.
Looking at it from the eyes of ancient people, they would have abandoned the cities. "Our water is foul, and the land isn't growing, the Gods have cursed this place."

Nothing to do with ancient aliens,this is just how people most commonly measure a year.
Not an actual basis for debate about extra terrestrials so dont even think about bringing up leap seconds.

@searfleshjoywear The Gregorian calendar was designed to revolve around religious festivals, which were conveniently aligned with the solstices. The only ones who immediately adopted it were Catholic, others eventually had no choice but to convert their calendars.
In my opinion, the 13 month calendars were much more accurate. 13 months, 28 days per month, every month started on Monday, ended on Sunday, following the complete lunar cycle.
