This brings back such wonderful memories of my favourite racehorse. My father took me to Sandown the day he was beaten by Arkle in the Gallagher Gold Cup - the greatest atmosphere I've ever known on a racecourse but somehow still a sad day - I still have the race-card. To me, Mill House is the very essence of National Hunt Racing.
I really feel so sorry for Mill House. If Arkle hadn't been around then he might have won a couple more Gold Cups, but then Dreaper had Flyingbolt waiting in the wings. Mill House will always have a special place in my affections; he was a wonderful chaser at his best.
Would absolutely love to see Mill House's 1967 Whitbread Gold Cup victory in which he jumped like the proverbial stag to beat Kapeno. David Nicholson, who rode him that day, said it was like sitting on an armchair. Mill House never put a foot wrong that day. The 'big fella' was a helluva a horse at his best.
Yes,I feel the same way about the 'big horse'. Mill House was the last 6-year old to win the Gold Cup and if Arkle hadn't be around who knows what he might have achieved. Having said that Tom Dreaper would have had Flyingbolt waiting in the wings.
Mill House was a great jumper on his good days ,but was prone to making the odd blunder. However he jumped like a stag here and the result was never in doubt.
When the 'big horse' won this race who could possibly have imagined that in just 12 months time his chasing crown would be worn by the greatest horse in the history of steeplechasing, Arkle.
Well, one of the great unanswerables is what Mill House might have achieved had he not been foaled the same year as Arkle. Certainly, immediately after this race nobody *in Britain* believed Mill House could be beaten for the foreseeable future (though it's a great irony that Mill House was also Irish-bred).

Can't help but feel sorry for Mill House - to be a truly great horse who just happened to be a contemporary of the greatest of all...

You have to think hat, at the least, he could have been a double Gold Cup winner.
