You know, I've more or less made peace with the fact that 95% of the movies that are made will be mediocre. By and large, it's product...product that's designed to appeal to an audience that enjoys it. Most people are not adventurous in their taste in movies, and they don't wish to be challenged...it's entertainment, and little more. Sometimes I enjoy the conventional, if it's produced with style and enthusiasm. I have room for both the mainstream and the arthouse in my life!
@CineRam I agree! While I do like arthouse fare, I think you need to have a balance of something like Uncle Boonmee and then something like a District 9. If every single movie I watched challenged me I'd have a constant headache!
John Cusack is awesome, you seen him in High Fidelity? btw noticed you mentioned a few Kubrick films in this vid, I've uploaded a few reviews of his films, which you might be interested in. thanks
Totally with you on Robert De Niro in Taxi Driver. One of my favorite male performances ever. I've really never seen a more authentic character than Travis Bickle, very surreal. Dude I thought I was the only one, Meghan Fox isn't my bag at all! I mean obvious eye candy but that's it. HATED THE VILLAGE TOO! First movie I can really remember being so bummed after watching. Texting in general pisses me off, I guess that's the hippie in me. I kind of liked this being long, was interesting throughout
@theInnerdvdPattern You hit the nail on the head. I agree completely. Natalie Portman has a natural beauty unlike Meghan Fox, she just seems fake.
I know, that was my first experience where a trailer advertised something that looking like a creepy idea, and the ending made everything I dug about the movie vanish. I will never revisit that movie. Left a bad taste.
I love technology, but I become an old man when it comes to texting, I've never understood it. I like conversations, more personal.
@TheBSKILL I don't dig the ultra tan or whatever it is look.
I kind of hate M.Night now hah. The movie actually made me start hating it before the ending. when it was revealed about the time that the village was really in angered me.
@theInnerdvdPattern Same. Looks like their trying too hard or something. Natural is the way too go. Even if your pale I still thinking trying to tan yourself too much looks too odd for my taste.
Oh man same here. I don't think I've enjoyed a M. Night movie after The Village. It sucks because based of Unbreakable, Signs, and Sixth Sense the dude has chops, he just has clearly lost his head. Like to put out The Last Airbender with a straight face, are you kidding me!?
@theInnerdvdPattern And a damn fine actress she is. Probably my favorite right now.
Oh man. I feel sorry for you. Are you still hurting from it? I knew it took me a long time to recuperate from that travesty referred to as a "film". LMAO!
@TheBSKILL I can't get enough of her. I've taken a liking to Michelle Williams over the past few years too but yeah you can't touch Natalie Portman.
Did you see the whole thing or? If you did then I feel sorry for you! I've seen a few episodes of the cartoon and it's not bad. The story didn't seem to complex so good job Shyma...however you spell it.
@theInnerdvdPattern Michelle Williams, sounds familiar. But yeah, i'll see just about anything if Portman is in it. Although I heard a lot of negative feedback on "Your Highness" did you catch that one? I looked hilarious. But yeah.
Oh no! I didn't. The trailers we're enough for me to be totally uninterested and not to mention it looked like a bomb from a mile away. Id much rather watch the cartoon. Which I have see a few episodes. Pretty good but will pass on the movie.
@TheBSKILL She's been in more independent movies more than anything but she was in Brokeback Mountain,Synecdoche New York and even Shutter Island as Leo Dicaprio's wife.
No I didn't see that. I kind of avoided it because it was bashed so much.
Yeah the reviews of it were enough for me haha. Maybe M.Night should take a break and/or go back to film school or something ha.
@theInnerdvdPattern Oh ok. I remember her from Shutter Island. I only raw half of Brokeback Mountain but I vaguely remember her in that. I'll have to check out more of her independent stuff.
Same. Unfortunate the theater HAD to play the trailer for it. LOL. I know eh? I heard pretty decent things on "Devil" but again, the trailer to me looked SO DUMB. I remember thinking that was the silliest concept. He needs to find his roots alright!
@theInnerdvdPattern Was meaning to check out Blue Valentine. I like Ryan Gosling, he's a good actor.
Yeah it looked terrible in my opinion. I might watch it if it ever comes on Netflix. That's about it. Very low expectations on that one.
I have no idea!! Has director made such a terrible plunge like he has? I can't think of any off the top of my head. Most Best Director noms are consistent at least.
@theInnerdvdPattern It's on my Comcast OnDemand, I think I will watch it :) Wasn't it nominated if I remember correctly? At least in performances.
Really Kubrick has never won? That's a damn shame. I can't recall John Hughes being nominated either which is tragic. M. Night certainly isn't living up to his debt titles. It's almost like he stop trying because he knows he'll break even lol
@TheBSKILL Michelle Williams was for best actress but unfortunately Ryan Gosling was snubbed. He deserved at least a nomination. LAME. It's not exactly an uplifting movie so be prepared. Kind of depressing but still good.
Yeah very lame. I think he was actually nominated for a Razzie for directing The Shining which completely baffles me.
Yeah it's really to bad John Hughes died. Wasn't he only in his early 50's or something. Not cool.
@theInnerdvdPattern Seems like Gosling ALWAYS is getting snubbed. Have you ever see "Half Nelson" such a great performance by him. Made me become a fan of his. Yeah I heard it was sort of a downer kind of movie but I'm up for anything that has good performances, no matter the subject matter.
A Razzie!? Epic failure. That movie was a horror classic! But of course it was ignored back then :(
Yeah very young! From what I've heard through Kevin Smith, he just wanted to retire w/ his family. Sucks.
@TheBSKILL He got nominated for Half Nelson I think but I agree. Yeah that was a good one. I think I might slightly prefer him in Blue Valentine. He's definitely better than the 'pretty boy' image he used to have a la The Notebook. Kind of like how Brad Pitt is actually a really good actor.
Yeah not cool! Agreed. The camerawork alone deserved an award among other things!
Ahh too bad. It did seem like he wasn't doing much of anything in his later years.
@theInnerdvdPattern You liked it over Half Nelson? I have to check it out. I know Half Nelson dealt with some heavy themes, so I'm not one of those people who if the movie is depressing I think of it any differently. The Notebook was just a giant wet-dream for chicks, kind of pisses me off he's most notable for THAT role. Yeah Brad Pitt is one of my favorite actors. When he's "on" he's untouchable.
Oh 100% agree! Such frightening shots still!
Yeah heard he just wanted to spend time w/ family.
@TheBSKILL Well I haven't seen Half Nelson in a long time and it's kind of different than Blue Valentine but I'd say yeah. I've actually never seen The Notebook but yeah it does suck.
He is! Have you seen The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford? That's one of my favorite Brad Pitt performances.
Well I can't bash him for that. It would've been cool to have seen more movies from him but at least his family got to see more of him.
@theInnerdvdPattern Yeah one is a school drama the other a romance. Hard to compare 'em. I watched it mainly because it was a "family" movie for the weekend, and not as bad as the later works of M. Night but definitely for the senseless girls. It's no Garden State or (500) Days!
I haven't but I've been meaning too. Isn't that the 1 w/ Casey Affleck in it 2?
Yeah I think he was writing scripts or something because a lot of movies in later years have been adapted works from John. But yeah.
Yeah Casey Affleck is in it as well as Sam Rockwell. It's not a traditional western and it is kind of slow paced but in a good way...well for me anyways.
Yeah that sounds about right. He wrote more than he directed. After all he wrote the Vacation movies from the 80's and didn't direct them.
@theInnerdvdPattern I like all of those actors, I'll need to see that asap. Sounds good, westerns are awesome.
Which are CLASSIC! I really feel like he molded some of my absolute favorites. He just had a talent for tapping into what it feels like to be our age I think. There will definitely be none other than him. Favorite Hughes movie btw?
@TheBSKILL It has a really great musical score too! I'm a sucker for movies that use piano a lot in there music for some reason.
Of course they are! I definitely agree with that. Hmm tough question. I know it's generally agreed upon that The Breakfast Club and Ferris Bueller's Day Off are his best and they are usually people's favorites I much prefer Vacation,Christmas Vacation and Planes, Trains And Automobiles. What's yours?
Foreign films are better than American ones. I'm currently addicted to Korean films and thanks for the heads up in the last video about Amelie coming to Blu-Ray. Thanks for this, Kyle.
@ksmred2 I think he can be a fine actor. For example he's great in Ed Wood and Dead Man(yeah I finally saw it!). I just think his choices as of the past 5-10 years has been kind of lame and he doesn't seem to be doing anything interesting.
No problem man! I'm glad that we've been able to talk about films on here and twitter.....
American History X may be the weakest film of those I mentioned but it's still good I think. Man watch The Up Series.
@ksmred2 Treeless Mountain is very understated and simple. I'd say that it's in a similar vein to Wendy And Lucy. I still need to check out Hong Sang-soo. What would be the best film to start with?
I still need to see anything from Albert Brooks. I'm thinking about checking out Lost In America soon.
I don't want to spoil Tabloid but there's something that happens and well let's just say she brought one of her dogs to the screening. You'll know what I'm talking about after you've seen it haha.
@theInnerdvdPattern Treeless Mountain looks like right up my alley. For Hong Sang-soo, Turning Gate is the best I've seen from him. Tale of Cinema and Woman on the Beach are also great. I'm one of the few people on this planet who prefer Brooks to Allen. Without him, no Curb Your Enthusiasm. No Apatow (though I don't care for his movies). He deconstructs films as he is making films. Well I've never considered Allen a perfect filmmaker even in his 'golden years'. Sure you have Manhattan and Annie Hall but you also have stuff like A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy which I didn't like hardly at all. He's mostly been hot or miss for me. I'm not big on Apatow either. Wait so are you saying Curb is like Apatow's stuff? Curb is 1000 times better in my opinion. I'll check out Brooks soon.

I'm so with on Megan Fox on all counts. She's looks way to fake to me to be attractive.
Hellz yes to The Joker & Hannibal Lecter! All your villain choices are great!
Great answers! I can't say you're wrong for any of the films you consider overrated. The films I think aren't all that would get me some hate as well lol. Ultimately some just don't hit with me emotionally and that's kinda important IMO even if I can see a films "technical" brilliance.
@Crisrav1138 Thank you! I was starting to feel like I was the only one who felt that way.
Thanks! Yeah your bound to always anger someone when you call something overrated...especially if it's considered a classic. I think though that if everyone had the same opinion it would get boring!
i love Vivre Sa Vie n Pierrot LeFou mosly just for Anna Karina and i was thinking on doin a video about stincky criterions and almost all the Godards are there ooppss have u ever seen Tout Va Bien? dude is the most pretentious n awful film ever made don't ever try to watch it
@MrJoel450 I think he's generally a pretentious director. I've only seen Breathless, which I mildly enjoyed and Pierrot Le Fou which I didn't like at all. It felt like the director was showing off. Karina is the saving grace though.
No I haven't seen Tout Va Bien and the way you describe it well....I don't I'll ever watch it!

Same here! I was anticipating The Village so much when it came out. Afterwards I felt like I'd been slapped in the face by the director or something.
Haha yes! I rarely text in general too. It takes me a while to text anyways. I guess I'm turning into an old man early ha.

@MrJoel450 Anna Karina is definitely easy on the eyes and I do like her but Goddard is another story.
Agreed about Johnny Depp.
Hmm I'm not sure. I guess they extended my limit for time length. Not sure what my maximum length is though.

@theInnerdvdPattern What is your opinion about Godard?
i love Vivre Sa Vie n Pierrot LeFou mosly just for Anna Karina and i was thinking on doin a video about stincky criterions and almost all the Godards are there ooppss have u ever seen Tout Va Bien? dude is the most pretentious n awful film ever made don't ever try to watch it
