How could u do this to a poor animal. Really? Is fur really that important that u need to go && kill a freakin Raccoon, Thats just sick. Im pretty damn sure that, you wouldnt wanna be skinned after you died! Think about other animals first before doing this. Have a heart. Jeezus! Sooner or later, Some animals are gonna go extinct becuz of ppl like you! Animals arent sapposed to be used for fur! They have lives too, just like us!
@TheresaRVids wow you must be very young or very ignorant,, wow i dislike posting negative comments but hunting certain animals (deer) can be forms of correcting former human mistakes of non selective hunting in the past which will preserve biodiversity, preventing species extinction. Second he said he found it on the road, hes only making use of an animal that died by someone elses hands.
@TheresaRVids How is an entire race species of Animals going to die when hunters control the population. Also, you skin an animal so that you can eat it. The skin is sold to be used to make clothing. Animals ARE supposed to be used as fur. They are also used for food. It's the circle of life.
all of this is well and good if your only selling the fur or using it for something like a hat, but if you want to get a little more money for your fur, dont cut around the feet just cut from the back of the legs to the tail pipe then cut the feet off the bone leaving it on your pelt then whan you get to the front legs do the same that way it can still be used for a mount turning your 10 dollar coon to a 30 dollar coon and so on
after finding the fresh carcass, is there a process before the skinning? a drying of the carcass? or just straight to dirty work? any help would be great.
THIS IS GROSS U NEED TO THINK WOULD YOU LIKE IT IF YOU WERE DEAD AND SOMEONE SKINNED U UR SICK AND I STRONGLY DISLIKE U OR ANYONE ELSE WHO ENJOYS THIS
For enyone who is interested in in how to skin, flesh, and preserve hides and furs, i "HIGHLY" recomend the DVD "Practical Fur Handling" by Tom Ozbourne. I bought it for $16 off amazon. he covers all North American species from raccoon, beaver to bobcat and coyote ect. Wether your a trapper or just some one that whants to preserve a road kill, its worth every penny.
I don't know much about tanning, but if I remember right, the whole point is not to let it dry out, because then it comes out like some kind of cardboard... if you want to know how to tan something, though, there are actually a lot of useful guides for it on the internet (especially for brain tanning).
Urbanscout, you have a long way to go in shinning a raccoon, correctly! I suggest you learn if you are truly interested; lesson to hill9292 of this blog. Also, tanning is not an easy process; suggest you send it to a tannery.
how do u use the brains, durring the tanning process? =]] As you can imagine, i've never skinned an animal in my life, but the process of both skinning, and tanning intrigues me. =]] So it'd be really neat if you could get back to me on that! ^_^
Wow you should really practice on bein easier with that you dont eed to cut up the belly neither you just need to cut around the rear feet and around the asshole and connect those cut and rip the hide off of it it only takes me about a minute to do one but i do over 800 coons and coyotes and squirrel a year so i have practice
well if u don't scrape the fat off the fat will rot/get rock solid and it will basically ruin your hide, also if u skin it like u should u can easily flip it right side out to flesh it.
This may be correct for butchering if you don't care about the hide, but for the fur trade you want to case-skin them. Make a cut from the ankle to ankle, 2 inches north of the vent. Then peel it off like a sock. You must de-bone the tail and split the tail so it lies flat. This method shown will rot the hide. You must scape off all the flesh and fat or it will all rot.
Thanks for the tip. I wasn't planning on trading this hide. I made a hat out of it for myself. It didn't rot, I don't know why you would assume it would. How do you stretch/scrape it when you case skin it? How do you brain-tan it when you case skin it? thanks!
I didn't have sound when I saw your video 1st. Now your method makes more sense. It perhaps did not rot because 1, it looks like the coon was probably sick because of it's lack of fat. They should be pig-like tubs of lard by Nov. When you case-skin, you hang them by the feet, and peel it like a sock. Much fat & flesh stays with the hide. The most important cut is ankle 2 ankle, bout 1 1/2 inches N of the vent. This makes the pelt longer than ankle to vent cuts. Longer pelt = more to sew with.
2nd, it didn't rot because I think you scraped as soon as it dried, perhaps overnight. When preping for fur trade/garment industry, coons are case skinned like a sock, then u flip the hide fur-in. It is slipped on a beam of oak wood. A curved knife is used to scrape off fat & flesh. 2-handed blades r used. The coon is then placed on a stretcher, wood or wire, shaped like a big surfboard. It dries 4 several days. Removed when skin feels like paper. Hung for storage. Keeps for years. :)
Yeah, in retropect I think case skinning most animals makes the "smoking" part easier if you're going to brain-tan it.
I keep trying to link to my blog where I brain-tanned it (and fucked up) and ended up making a coonskin trucker hat. I'll add the link to the description sidebar.
say that u went and hunted deer...you kept the meat of course...thats what hunting is all about! and then u skin it for its hide as a plus...if u dont want to make anything out of the hide cant u jus sell it and to who could you sell it to?
raccon hides are worth more if you dont cut down the belly and chest. How I do it is I cut across the back legs and ass and pull the hide off like a shirt. And than scrape the fat off and turn it right side in
Niiiice thanks for the vid, I found a fully intact roadkill raccoon last night. Messy business roadkill is, but I am sure he will make a nice pelt when I get to processing it completely. First project in quite a long time, I used to work as a taxidermist.
You're not supposed to cut the coon up the stomach. You're supposed to cut, around the feet then go from one foot to th other by cutting acros the anus. Then you're supposed to pull the pelt down. When you get to the ears, you cut the cartilidge as close to the skull as possible, same thing with eyes and nose. Thats how you skin a 'Coon.
thanks for this video. . i was driving through the mountians on the highway and there i saw the coon, your video came to mind and so insted of letting it go to waste i pulled over and to make a long story short my brother and i have now skinned our first coon. . .how did you use the brain for the tanning process?
man ill teach you how to skin a coon and if anyone is interested in authentic coon skin hats message me ill mail you one for 15 dollars depending on the size.
man, I wanna learn how to skin a dead animal but I've never done it before so I'm kinda intimidated. And I like how you said: "thanks little raccoon" in the end. That was nice.
this week i trapped 1 possum and 2 coons...the first one i only kept the tail....im gonna sharpen my knives b4 i kill this one and try to skin this one...they have already killed 10 of my rabbits and 5 chickens....its time i got some resourse out of that meat they ate....what is the best way to kill them quickly? nail gun is the only gun i have....thank u for sharing your skill for folks that want to learn,,,,too bad carrot eaters dont watch salad shows and keep their negative comments private
If you give the animal a blow to the back of the head with a heavy stick or even a baseball bat handle you can maintain a safer distance than getting in close with a nail gun. You dont have to mash its head, just a couple quick whacks to dispatch it humanely.
Hey urban, if you cut around the ankles then across the thighs, hang it upside down and case skin it, your job would be much easier.Peel the skin off like a sock while working the flesh with your knife.
The rule of thumb is that all mammals have enough brains to tan their own hides; as far as how to do it, there are various guides online. I recommend the one on mullerslanefarm . c o m
Thanks Urban Scout. I in the not so distant past gutted and skinned a fawn. The fawn had his leg torn off by a dog I was walking with through the woods. The dog didn't kill him, so I had to. First time I ever killed a mammal. Also the first time I've gutted or skinned any being. I ate the salvageable meat and fed the rest to the dogs. It was all pretty intense. I still have the skin, been thinking of making a drum with it. Thanks again for this video. Wish I had my experience on tape to share...
Here's a question you might be able to answer for me. I've skinned two raccoon's as well and the first time my attempt to split the tail failed uberly, so I just had to pull it off the bone which ended up killing the tail half way. So my question is, how do you split the tail? I take it merely with just a sharp knife? Kind of obvious I guess, but my raccoons still failed...both of my were roadkill, though I know that has nothing to do with the question...
Interesting. The tail is pretty weak, you have to be super carefull. Mine is okay, perhaps yours rotted away? How old was the roadkill? Maybe the tails were run-over and weakened them more. I don't know...
Apparently so...I don't think my roadkills were all that old. Mum got the first one and said that it couldn't have been more than three hours old--tack on another hour to get it home, about four. The one I got I have no idea how old it was. The only thing on both of them that had been run over was the head. Both of their skulls were crushed.
hi i pick up a lot of road kills in woburn uk.chinese waterdeer muntjack hare pheashant rabbit.good meat that should never go to waste.thousands of people just drive on by .meat is expensive this is free range .chinese water deer tastes very nice .muntjack is dark and very strong tasteing as is hare .rabbitt is very bland low fat .wood pigeon is very dk meat very rich.
There's nothing wrong with wanting to practice primitive skills, and the skin of animals is often wasted by many of todays hunters. This vid might inspire a young hunter to save the hide from one of his kills and actually do something with it.
This guy took road kill that would normally rot on the side of the road and turned it into a useful object. Primitive recycling. Nice job.
i save most of the hides from my kills and only few are wasted. i do my own taxidermy and tan my winters bounties and give most of them to my church which has a bazaar every spring

Why all the hate?
There's nothing wrong with wanting to practice primitive skills, and the skin of animals is often wasted by many of todays hunters. This vid might inspire a young hunter to save the hide from one of his kills and actually do something with it.
This guy took road kill that would normally rot on the side of the road and turned it into a useful object. Primitive recycling. Nice job.

i totally agree with you ^^
its acually sad how some primitive skills arent used today
catyoukai8 4 years ago
yeah, when in a survival scenario, these are essential skills.

i save most of the hides from my kills and only few are wasted. i do my own taxidermy and tan my winters bounties and give most of them to my church which has a bazaar every spring
