Maybe another thing to try in getting people to try BSD is maybe not to come across as a snickering teenager that looks down on everyone and laughs like the world is full of retards.
@jcii2 Yeah, I love gnome! But anyone who says "X sucks" in computerland lacks understanding that ... everything has its strengths and weaknesses and pros and cons, and very few softwares actually "suck" (malware sucks, viruses suck, lots of ad-driven crap sucks, but Windows, BSD, Linux, all kick ass in their own way).
I had tried PCBSD 7 and then 8.0. Poor in sound and graphic drivers. The installation with some basic programs takes longer than most of the Linux distro. It is sad to say PCBSD is not yet ready for any casual user like me. Of course a graphic installer may be a new thing to BSD folks, but it has been here with us a long long time ago, particularly in Linux world. Ubuntu or Mint or OpenSUSE is much better and easy to use. Thanks.
GNOME rules I like it way better than KDE ... He is wrong Gnome does not suck it is used by way my people than KDE ... Plus I think KDE looks like it was made for a 12 year old girl it looks very feminine... KDE also look more like a Mobile device OS and not a real desktop OS...
Seeing how this is 2 years ago, im wondering what PC-bsd look and feels like now. I currently have a few computers in my parents house that are linux because there computers just cant run windows anymore, and they dont want to buy a new computer yet and they hate it. This is more of a windowsie feel. does any one know how it is now?
PC-BSD Made me look at the BSD's from Linux and I didn't not like the idea. However, I think PC-BSD has a long way to go still. It is still buggy in some parts and it really does not have the drivers for most PC hardware. Also it runs much, much slower than a comparable Linux distro installed on the same hardware. I hope the PC-BSD team keeps up the good work. PC-BSD may be good with time.
Really? bsd is so much better than linux? as far as stability, thats a big MAYBE, but bsd barely has a desktop version set up, this PCBSD barely even has support for wireless controlling via gui, nor does it have a stable application updater? your hating on linux and yet we're ahead of you on basically every single aspect? I'm sorry im not trying to hate on anyone, i like the idea of BSD but all the crap bsd flings at linux is annoying, especially since its inferior in every way.
@CJay554 While I agree with you on the crap-flinging, I think "and yet we're a head of you on basically every single aspect" is an incorrect comment. While Linux is _much_ further ahead than BSD in GUI tools, (which makes sense if you consider that the BSDs were/are designed with servers in mind) if you look at things like the Networking stacks I think you might find that BSD is superior in some areas.
this is stupid dude!!! why are you running Mac Os x in that machine even myself I've intalled an Opensouce Os in my macs and I'm not an expert like you
Actually KDE is just desktop and FreeBSD is operating system. You can install many windows managers (kde, gnome, sawfish, etc.) on FreeBSD just as on any Linux.
I have an old windows 98 computer in the closet and was thinking of installing KDE on it but a friend recommended BSD any thoughts on what I need to do? I just want to do it to entertain myself and have an alternative pc that is usable as windows 98 is virtually useless.
KDE takes up too much memory for a computer that old. BSD is a bit hard to install and harder to use. I would suggest using Xubuntu for your old computer. It's fast and lightweight.
Its a matter of choice, I find BSD to be a bit faster and MUCH more stable, it also has a nice "feel" to it if you know what I mean. Pc-BSD is more user friendly I find but FreeBSD is a bit more configurable
You shouldn't have said that, you don't know how much fail KDE4 is !!! I loved kde3 but when I tried KDE4 I couldn't even figure out how to do the easiest things!! I tried to use it for over a month and it just got worse and worse! I'm never trying it again, I'm still using kde3 with gentoo which is painful with all the masked and updated packages! ITS A LOT OF WORK :D
Under the FreeBSD i cannot watch ANY vids on this site, im VERY curious WHY that is so, obviously its nothing to do with the actual OS, its the "admins" on this site...
wow. This is complete bullshit. You can install a 64 bit version! No problem!
''PS: it is good for old pc only'' I dont know what you are talking about. If this were mostly for old computers, they would not have put KDE4 as desktop environment by default, i can tell you that my friend.

there are 1366??, i saw 1066 or 1333 or 1666, but 1366 i haven't.
But, a core2 ex are hard to get, and a core i7 too expensive...I'd like probably stay on vista till w7 get stable. I said that w7 need a very good graphic card to see it adequate.

core 2 ex can be found in amazon and micro center, radio shock, compusa. if not go with pentium dual core which it also has decent performance as well. and graphic card just go with geforce 96000 you'll be ok.
Yeap!..but core 2 ex it's expensive too (there are a bit of them). Beside I prefer AMD a Phenom II X2 costs the same of a Pentium and works better =). With the graphic card I'm looking for a GTX 260 or Radeon HD4870 (in deed I prefer ATi because in my personal experiences nvidia fails, not always but it does =S)
You're wrong. I'm not publishing the "new Microsoft garbage". I just use it. I would say that this OS isn't easy to install and first use. Maybe this OS made for real users but not for the wide community.
Right, so I just pointed out a Linux distro, and you just brush it off and continue to lie. Ubuntu can be installed from WINDOWS for fucks sakes, it's called a WUBI install. Ubuntu * com, it's pretty simple. Google is your friend. I'm on 7 RC (not a full version, it doesn't currently exist. Only an unstable version) and Ubuntu is far better.
Some my friends, who lashes Windows, work in computer sphere. The rest use Windows without a doubt. Understand?
I want to say that person who wish to install any OS (Lin, BSD), have to speak English well. If you don't - use Win. I work as a truck mechanic, so speak English not well (technical English a little), it is very hard to me to install these OSes, except Win.
Then you're in luck. Ubuntu is installable and usable in around 40 languages, and I noticed that one of them is in fact similar to what language is on your channel.
What's the difference between Ubuntu and Mandriva. I am useing ubuntu and I heard about Mandrive but I never tried it. It seems to me that ubuntu is more popular.
ubuntu is more popular than mandriva. However, this is because ubuntu is aimed for people who never used linux before. And their right, ubuntu is a very good distro for linux beginners. Mandriva on the other hand, is slightly more advanced than ubuntu, but in the long run, it is more capable. For example, mandriva is much more graphically advanced than ubuntu. Also, mandriva programs install very easily.(Just double click and it installs by itself.) You should try the mandriva live cd.
What do you mean more capable? It's all Linux underneath the distro customizations.. you can do anything with any distro, each one is just geared toward certain use cases by default.
When I said it's more capable, I meant that mandriva programs are .rpm based. This means that programs are easier t install and more programs are becoming compatible with .rpm. And if the operating system has better program compatibility, than the operating system is more capable.
Please explain to me how being RPM based (versus .DEB based) makes them easier to install. And please site some references as to how you're claiming "more programs are becoming compatible with .rpm". Last I heard, Debian-based packages far outnumbered RPM-based packages.
The package manager logic is better at solving dependencies on DEB packages last I heard. I have used RPM and DEB and they honestly seem about equal. This is a myth perpetuated from what has been similarly how most Linux people talk about BSOD when that was clearly only a problem in the Windows 9x days.
What have they taken from Linux?? They took everything from BSD because they could keep it all closed source and make money off of it - just like Microsoft did with their TCP/IP stack (seriously, Google it). Apple is just as profiteering as Microsoft, if not worse. Open source is the only real way to evolve.
"It's really amazing that in 2009 only M$ has common sense?? I guess that's why they sell so much. "
You are so clueless in not even funny. Kde is the best GUI out there. And the reason MS sells so much is because Idiots like you accept the OS given to you with your computer. Keep your virus ridden Winblows. But then if you had the intelligence to run anything else you would not have voted for Obama.
i have to agree on this one. in fact, this guy is terrible at promoting anything :)) he mocks gnome, he mocks his own product by counting the flaws in bsd, he's using a mac... i don't know who send him to that conference anyway
even in CD installer ( cd2 ) u can install the graphical environment, during install ( KDE etc ) or post install ( sysinstall/pkg_add ).. it just a matter of choice, normally i use FreeBSD for server and not install X/GUI at all...
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
yeah, look who's talking :)) you start off by posting this stupid video that says nothing good about BSD and a lot of other silly stuff about other OSs, with no arguments, and now you're the one who gets all upset and what not. fuck off!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
it's mind boggling how this ignorant can say so many stupid things... another thing worth noting, is the fact that freebsd doesn't deal well with dependencies, through its ports/packages system. there is no such tool as apt-get, aptitude, yum, zypper etc., as in linux. freebsd excels in many ways, but at this chapter lags far behind linux
your a complete moron, you sit here posting for a day. just to post your trolling reply. You have no clue what freebsd is about. Linux honestly has nothing on BSD when it comes to running it as a server. I will not feed your troll-ness after this comment.
the init process and the config file in arch linux (and slackware, for that matter) is BSD style, but the rest of it is different. arch has a package manager that deals well with dependencies, and moreover it uses binary packages, so the install is fast, even if you do it from scratch. gentoo is the most freebsd-like, the package manager (portage) works exactly like the ports tree (and has the same issues :D)
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
talking about zfs, this mutt puts it as if freebsd has done anything special in order to get it into the system. they did nothing, it was more of a gift , because solaris went opensource, so mac os x and freebsd rushed to get their hands on it - and they should have. but they didnt develop it or anything. solaris on the other hand went open because of the linux drivers they want to get, so you should rather thank linux for that, which supports more file systems than any other os anyway
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
if you want to read/hear something interesting and useful on such topics like freebsd/linux, go watch/read stuff from guys like greg lehey, or kirk mckusick... hell, even kriss moore is better than this sucker right here... :)) i like/use BSD, FreeBSD, PC-BSD and even Mac OS X :) i also like Beastie... but this jerkoff is plain ludicrous. and by the way, linux rocks B-) this guy is just kicking himself in the butt with those stupid comments he makes
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
this guy mat or whatever the hell his name is, is just plain ridiculous. it has already been stated - all he says is crap, wild conjecture, major bullshit. other than whimsical statements, i haven't heard anything useful/interesting. on the one hand, he dismisses things that really DO work, saying they suck and that's it. :) no argument needed, he is a demigod - in his own mind perhaps :P - anyway. on the other hand, he counts the flaws in PC-BSD... :)) pathetic
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
you're wrong about that. mac os x's kernel is called XNU, and it is a hybrid kernel, composed of a mach microkernel and a BSD subsystem. mac os x has some freebsd elements in it (like the TCP/IP stack), but definitely not the kernel. you're the one who should "google it"
I was thinking of trying out PCBSD! But when I saw this PC-BSD guy, I changed my mind.
He's making fun of other operating systems, without strong arguments. He only says this sucks, that sucks. Nobody is gonna use your BSD if he talks like that!! Especially Linux users! WTF the Tux mascot in the video
He did say something about Linux, don't know he was referring to the kernel or the GNU/Linux OS. And he shouldn't male fun of Tux. And I think you are a BSD fanboy.
I think my religion is the same as Lev Tolstoy, Easter-Orthodox Christianity, but i don't go to church. And of course i don't belive every aspect of christianity.
why are you cherry picking the christian faith? what good is it in it's "entirety" if you can just pick up the parts you like and ignore the parts you don't?
besides, who said the creator of the universe needs to be created? maybe he doesn't want to be created. maybe he does even exist.
But it'll be pointless if we waste our life worshipping a god that didn't exist. God shouldn't have been capitalized, you weren't referring to the Christian god..

Thank you =)
I'll try to use it.
Free soft forever!!!! =)

Ubuntu it's easier. Example:
Detects all your hardware (graphic card, wireless, webcam, 5 in 1 cardslot, etc.)
Ubuntu has a graphical installation so easy that give you indications step by step. It's just easier to install than windows vista.

I just installed the latest version of PC-BSD on a virtual machine.
It's really not bad, I would definitely recommend it!
But in my opinion, Mandriva Linux is still the best windows alternative.
windows7linux 2 years ago
What's the difference between Ubuntu and Mandriva. I am useing ubuntu and I heard about Mandrive but I never tried it. It seems to me that ubuntu is more popular.
futur3artist8D 2 years ago
ubuntu is more popular than mandriva. Also, mandriva programs install very easily.(Just double click and it installs by itself.) You should try the mandriva live cd.
windows7linux 2 years ago
hmmm I might. It was a bitch dual booting ubuntu linux and mac and it was even more of a bitch deleting the thing. lol
futur3artist8D 2 years ago
What do you mean more capable? It's all Linux underneath the distro customizations.. you can do anything with any distro, each one is just geared toward certain use cases by default.
thedarkener 2 years ago
When I said it's more capable, I meant that mandriva programs are .rpm based. This means that programs are easier t install and more programs are becoming compatible with .rpm. And if the operating system has better program compatibility, than the operating system is more capable.
:)
windows7linux 2 years ago
Please explain to me how being RPM based (versus .DEB based) makes them easier to install. And please site some references as to how you're claiming "more programs are becoming compatible with .rpm". Last I heard, Debian-based packages far outnumbered RPM-based packages.
thedarkener 2 years ago
The package manager logic is better at solving dependencies on DEB packages last I heard. I have used RPM and DEB and they honestly seem about equal. This is a myth perpetuated from what has been similarly how most Linux people talk about BSOD when that was clearly only a problem in the Windows 9x days.
ismouton 2 years ago
Ubuntu has .deb, like you say, just double-click and the installation starts.
And .rpm and .deb supports the same software, in deed more software comes in .deb all because ubuntu.

BSD is more like MAC because OS X is based off of BSD.
tenshitaiakuma 2 years ago
Duuuh. BSD is like Unix not MAC, MAC have taken some source from BSD, Linux etc.
jokeersuper 2 years ago 5
I've used those OS MAC, GNU/LINUX and I should say that freebsd is more better than mac or Linux and other unix based and Unix like Os.
hellertytus 2 years ago
What have they taken from Linux?? They took everything from BSD because they could keep it all closed source and make money off of it - just like Microsoft did with their TCP/IP stack (seriously, Google it). Apple is just as profiteering as Microsoft, if not worse. Open source is the only real way to evolve.

You are so clueless in not even funny. Kde is the best GUI out there. And the reason MS sells so much is because Idiots like you accept the OS given to you with your computer. Keep your virus ridden Winblows. But then if you had the intelligence to run anything else you would not have voted for Obama.

i have to agree on this one. in fact, this guy is terrible at promoting anything :)) he mocks gnome, he mocks his own product by counting the flaws in bsd, he's using a mac... i don't know who send him to that conference anyway

one question FreeBSD has graphical enviroment ?
Mpratsonis 2 years ago
yes of course
filmmaker2698 2 years ago
the graphic envioroment is independent of any bsd, its called Xorg .
so any bsd can run any POSIX programn so yes freeBSD have xorg, also openBSD an NetBSD and so on.
24oscar24 2 years ago
"one question FreeBSD has graphical enviroment ?"
Not out of the box.
Yldii 2 years ago
-yes it has. you can find it on their ports collection and install every window manager that you want and customize it the way you like.
blackwater127001 2 years ago
even in CD installer ( cd2 ) u can install the graphical environment, during install ( KDE etc ) or post install ( sysinstall/pkg_add ).. it just a matter of choice, normally i use FreeBSD for server and not install X/GUI at all...

yeah, look who's talking :)) you start off by posting this stupid video that says nothing good about BSD and a lot of other silly stuff about other OSs, with no arguments, and now you're the one who gets all upset and what not. fuck off!

it's mind boggling how this ignorant can say so many stupid things... another thing worth noting, is the fact that freebsd doesn't deal well with dependencies, through its ports/packages system. there is no such tool as apt-get, aptitude, yum, zypper etc., as in linux. freebsd excels in many ways, but at this chapter lags far behind linux
youdanieltube 3 years ago
your a complete moron, you sit here posting for a day. just to post your trolling reply. You have no clue what freebsd is about. Linux honestly has nothing on BSD when it comes to running it as a server. I will not feed your troll-ness after this comment.
Jamesthefishy 3 years ago 4
pkg_add rings any bells to you?
24oscar24 2 years ago
it does, but it still break packages :)) same thing happens in gentoo, the linux distro that is most bsd like
youdanieltube 2 years ago
i use arch/debian/openbsd i have not used gentoo but archlinux gots its rc.conf and shit its pretty bsd also got ABS a ports like system
24oscar24 2 years ago
the init process and the config file in arch linux (and slackware, for that matter) is BSD style, but the rest of it is different. arch has a package manager that deals well with dependencies, and moreover it uses binary packages, so the install is fast, even if you do it from scratch. gentoo is the most freebsd-like, the package manager (portage) works exactly like the ports tree (and has the same issues :D)
youdanieltube 2 years ago
ohh i see your point. :)
youre right.
24oscar24 2 years ago
With Gentoo it's better build the programs than use the package manager. And the most of Gentoo users make the compilation of their programs
OERB159260 2 years ago
Gentoo is not bsd-based and isn't like (bsd is faster), but Gentoo's good.

talking about zfs, this mutt puts it as if freebsd has done anything special in order to get it into the system. they did nothing, it was more of a gift , because solaris went opensource, so mac os x and freebsd rushed to get their hands on it - and they should have. but they didnt develop it or anything. solaris on the other hand went open because of the linux drivers they want to get, so you should rather thank linux for that, which supports more file systems than any other os anyway

if you want to read/hear something interesting and useful on such topics like freebsd/linux, go watch/read stuff from guys like greg lehey, or kirk mckusick... hell, even kriss moore is better than this sucker right here... :)) i like/use BSD, FreeBSD, PC-BSD and even Mac OS X :) i also like Beastie... but this jerkoff is plain ludicrous. and by the way, linux rocks B-) this guy is just kicking himself in the butt with those stupid comments he makes

this guy mat or whatever the hell his name is, is just plain ridiculous. it has already been stated - all he says is crap, wild conjecture, major bullshit. other than whimsical statements, i haven't heard anything useful/interesting. on the one hand, he dismisses things that really DO work, saying they suck and that's it. :) no argument needed, he is a demigod - in his own mind perhaps :P - anyway. on the other hand, he counts the flaws in PC-BSD... :)) pathetic

you're wrong about that. mac os x's kernel is called XNU, and it is a hybrid kernel, composed of a mach microkernel and a BSD subsystem. mac os x has some freebsd elements in it (like the TCP/IP stack), but definitely not the kernel. you're the one who should "google it"

Oh he's trying to be funny! NOt funny!
He's a POOR Sucker himself. Hate his FANBOY talk!

He said Gnome sucks. Thats not a nother Os, its just a desktop environment. Which just so happens to suck BTW.

He did say something about Linux, don't know he was referring to the kernel or the GNU/Linux OS. And he shouldn't male fun of Tux. And I think you are a BSD fanboy.

Gnome sucks? That's just your personal opinion! The freedom of free software & open source is to let people choose what they want and not.......
What you say is the same as YES it sucks, because it sucks! You should tell WHY YOU think it sucks and WHY another is better or worse

Yup, but the creator of the universe(not the judeo/christian God) deserves to be worshiped, don't you think?
nchristy08 3 years ago
Out of curiosity, what is your religion?
highchief42 3 years ago
I think my religion is the same as Lev Tolstoy, Easter-Orthodox Christianity, but i don't go to church. And of course i don't belive every aspect of christianity.
nchristy08 3 years ago
why are you cherry picking the christian faith? what good is it in it's "entirety" if you can just pick up the parts you like and ignore the parts you don't?
besides, who said the creator of the universe needs to be created? maybe he doesn't want to be created. maybe he does even exist.
ambir 3 years ago
Maybe yes, maybe not. We'll see when we get to the other side.
nchristy08 3 years ago
what if there is no other side? we've got no evidence saying there is an " other side ".
ambir 3 years ago
Are you imortal? What i was trying to say is we'll see if there is a God when we'll die.
nchristy08 3 years ago
But it'll be pointless if we waste our life worshipping a god that didn't exist. God shouldn't have been capitalized, you weren't referring to the Christian god..
