The knock on his power might not really be fair, it's not a secret that he's had hand problems later in his career. We've seen hand problems affect the way Mayweather punches. The main thing is that Americans didn't see enough of Calzaghe, so a lot of the criticism is unfair. He's a disappointment because he retires undefeated and he didn't entertain us.
It's a shame there seem to be some kind of question marks to Calzaghe's career, at least to Americans, because he's an undefeated champion retiring on top. I do still think he's clearly better than anyone at 168-175 right now.
He didn't necessarily seem adamant on fighting them, risk outweighed purse, and maybe even a risk for a hometown decision since he wasn't coming to the US. It seems as though Calzaghe and his manager were content to just beat whoever was in front of them. Career wise, I see it RJJ > Calzaghe > Hopkins, even RJJ fell off way too early. Hopkins > Calzaghe maybe if he wins the Cruiserweight title at his age, even if Adamek turns out to not be so great.
Not that he wasn't old himself, but it raises questions about what would happen in their physical primes, because fighters like Hopkins and RJJ seem more physically imposing than Calzaghe, its a wonder how they would have fared when they were younger and in better shape. Then, his resume comes into question because he retires undefeated and didn't fight a lot of guys or when he should have. Hopkins and RJJ did duck fighting him because he was an unknown.
He outworked and beat Hopkins, but going down early and going on with a fight where both fighters looked unimpressive probably wasn't good for his appeal in the US. He seems to be physically strong, but his punches look unimpressive. Next fight against RJJ, he goes down early. He gets up and does show something by going on to what he did, but he couldn't get rid of a strong but shot Roy. His fitness and mental toughness were impressive, but that was all, and this was against older fighters.
UK fans are more passionate, and I think Calzaghe is a great boxer. The problem with him is America is that when we saw him succeed, it wasn't as impressive as we would have imagined. There's the Manfredo stoppage. Manfredo sucks and would have lost, but he didn't look more than stunned and it makes us wonder how many times Calzaghe received the hometown treatment. He owned Lacy, but he couldn't get rid of him despite all of the punches he landed.

this reminds me of a bar i was in about 2am in the states. this old guy was making an effort to get up and had knocked his beer over earlier and some of it spilled on the floor, the burley guy next to him stood up and reached over to help the old guy up and slipped on the spilled beer on the floor, he fell backwards and hit his head on the jukebox and it knocked him out cold they had to call an ambulance.

you know the prescott fight everyone was saying how he is fighting another no one and look what happened...obviously he is not going to fight current world champions right away he needs to build up..also fagan went full 12 rounds with chavez and world class boxers so fagan is not some no one he is a hard puncher like prescott the only difference was khan was more careful and he won the way he is suppose to! this reminds me of a bar i was in about 2am in the states. this old guy was making an effort to get up and had knocked his beer over earlier and some of it spilled on the floor, the burley guy next to him stood up and reached over to help the old guy up and slipped on the spilled beer on the floor, he fell backwards and hit his head on the jukebox and it knocked him out cold they had to call an ambulance.
