  • Their love breaks my heart. They loved each other so much, but were doomed to be separated for years on end. And through all that they remained true to each other and as in love with each other as when they first met. There are no modern romances that can compare to theirs.

  • I love 1776. To this day, I end all my emails by saying "P.S. Pins! Abigail!"

  • Glad to know John had good taste in Women (I'm one of those New England Girls ;))

  • One of the loveliest scenes in "1776." Even the beginning of this letter, where John compares the southern women besides the more robust "New England girls," is breathtaking. It is immensely clever to show their relationship literally through the text of their (very passionate and moving) letters. Kudos to the lovely (and little-known, outside of B'way) Virginia Vestoff.

    'Saltpeter, John!!'

  • "let me revel in romantic allusion..." :)

so freakin romantic it hurts. i love it.

  • The person who disliked this is a Soviet communist.

  • There is, without a doubt, hands down, no question, no greater love in the history of man kind than the love between Abigail and John Adams. Just thinking about the two of them moves me to tears.

  • lovuh's pillah at 1:15

  • It was this scene that above all others made this movie a perennial favorite when I first saw it, years and years ago. They are so devoted to each other and this song is so moving.

  • Call me crazy, but I think I'm falling in love with John Adams.

  • I love these scenes. They letters remind of the good love. Because in Romeo and Juliet they both die and where's the happy ending in that?:)

  • Virginia Vestoff's performance is beautifully touching. I loved listening to the Broadway recording and am pleased she got to do the role in the movie. It saddens me so that she died when she was only 40.

  • @makeittrue Oh no she died, thats too bad. She was great in the movie.

  • At 0:51 did she say f u John

  • no. what made you think that? lol

  • @lamedude1245 lol no she said effusions I thought she said f u john at first to.

  • @lamedude1245 she said "And you, John?"

  • *sigh* its so romantic. i love it :)

  • Abigail/John. The original OTP. :D

  • remind me again...in this scene, just how are they communicating?

  • The low-tech version of a split-screen, naturally. It's the only way to talk to your loved ones.

  • of course

  • Technically, through letters. But it is a musical, so we can suspend our disbelief.

  • Through Letters (inspidered by their actual letters)

  • I like this. While Thomas and Martha's love is more passionate and innocent, John and Abigal's is deeper, more intellectual.

  • this is my favorite song from the musical

  • My gosh, Virginia's voice gives me shivers. They are such an amazing couple!

  • John and Abigal Adams wrote letters to each other which showed their great affection for each other, one of history's great matches.

  • And she really did write:

    Write to me with sentimental effusion;

Let me revel in romantic illusion.

That line was taken from one of her letters.

  • i love this song so much

  • I agree with celestialstardust, even though they posted 3 months ago.

  • This movie is extremely adictive - I agree! John and Abigail are soooo romantic in a quiet way. Love the formality of their love! It always makes me smile because it seems to silly sometimes that great men of history sing and prance about like this! Makes it all the better in my opinion!

  • aww, best thing I've seen for a long time

  • Forget Romeo and Juliet...John and Abby's is the greatest love story of the ages.

  • romeo and juliet isn't even in the same category: teenage love vs. true mature love? no contest ; )

  • I like George Brown and Anne Nelson Brown, but that's my Canadian pride speaking. (They were so cute!)

  • Will Durant wrote that there is nothing compared to the love an old man feels for his old wife.

  • LOL...Abby and John were hardly old during the summer of 1776; they were barely in their thirties!

  • John Adams said he was only 41!

  • @believinginluv

These words were not just cooked up by the librettist. They were actually lifted from the very letters of John an Abagail Adams.

A great love story and model couple if there ever was one.

And an Honorable President, even if not among the greatest.

  • I saw this movie back in middle school and I liked it then but I love it even more now, it's a really great production and music! Pretty funny too : )

  • Aww, this is so romantic...

  • If it were possible, I'd really like it if someone could post the movie here. I saw snippets in history class and I really liked it! This is such a sweet and beautiful scene, I'm sad that I didn't get to see it.

  • This is such a beautiful song. The harmonies are ingenious and masterful. They both sang it marvelously as well.

  • i'm addicted to this movie I love it and I'm a 15 year old guy...i am like John Adams LOL both when i argue to stand my ground and romantically with women.

  • In one of his later letters to Abigal, she teases him about turning 60, and he replys by saying that if she was within grabbing distance, he could soon convince her that he was not over 40.

    They were so in love

  • It's true: their letters revealed how much, how deeply they loved each other....

...Now why can't I find a man like that?

  • I feel the lack same as you do. Its terrible really.

Although, I would prefer a man to be a bit taller, and perhaps less obnoxious, wouldn't you? ;)

  • @sassenachlass

He was obnoxious and disliked, you know that!

  • @A1l2l2e2n4

Well, yes. But STILL! I don't dislike him!

And, frankly, I would take him even though he was disliked. :D

  • @harwetopa address?

  • @GoinPostalx How sweet! I thank you.

  • @harwetopa Honestly, I'd just like a man who can fiddle. ;)

  • @harwetopa Show me a woman like that these days, and I'll show you a man like that to match.

  • "Do you still smell of vanilla and spring air?"

    What a guy.

Oh my goodness, the harmony at end...wow.

This film never ceases to amaze me.

  • This musical should be revived again. The score is so complex and yet pefect for the story. And it compacts those historic events into a jam packed-thoughtful-laugh-filled two hours. You sit on the edge of your seat waiting for the final vote on whether to seek independence or not-and you know the outcome already! A masterful script.

  • This song is indeed called "Yours, Yours, Yours". What you are thinking of is "Piddle, Twiddle, and Resolve", it is not a reprise, and not that many people know how to spell saltpetre, especially when spell check tells them to spell it wrong.

  • After this touching song, it makes Martha Jefferson's song about her husband's "violin" seem so superficial. Don't get me wrong, though, I adore both songs.

  • this part always makes me cry. i love this movie, i love the acting, the songs, everything. it's the movie of my soul, and this is the song of my heart. :) lol

  • It makes me cry too. :-)

  • KITT!

  • These are based on the letters that they exchanged during the drafting of the Declaration. How sweet that they missed each other so deeply! I love these songs... Humanity to politics, indeed.

  • yup yup

  • A warmly rendered and soulful duet that added humanity to the play's political drama. The violin finish brings tears.

  • I love this song!
