Possibly one of the most useful Vortex episodes I've seen. I'll certainly be referring back to this next time I debate with my Protestant friends.
Question: You mention 40,000 Protestant denominations. I used that figure one time in a debate and was dismissed because I couldn't prove the number. They said there were only about 20. I believe my point still stands even with 20 denominations, but is there a place I can point them to which shows a list of those 40,000 denominations? Thanks!
@ChrisDaron When you're done laughing, make sure you tell him the truth and educate him. It's not funny and it's not fair if don't share the truth we have.
The Church is very sparing in it's interpretation of scripture. However, when the Church does interpret scripture it does show the chasm of difference between Catholics and Protestants, for example, John 6 or Matthew 16: 18. We believe the Church and the Pope as the successor of St Peter will be guided by the Holy Spirit and hence has the authority to interpret scripture. If anyone contradicts the teaching of the Church even if it's a catholic scholar don't listen to them, they are in error.
@auzziesoceroo Before there was even a Bible, there were these traditions. Without them, 2/3rds of the Bible would not even exist. Jesus believed in these so-called traditions...was He invalid? No. To say the Catholic Church is wrong is to say, the Trinity lied to us.
This is ultimately the big question anybody has to grapple with when approaching the Catholic Church with an open mind. Pick ANY topic, and you will always wind up coming back to the authority issue. The God-given, apostolic authority to declare truth and identify error. Basically, either the Catholic Church is the only one who has this authority, or no one has it, and we're all in a heap of trouble if that's the case. As always, good stuff! Thanks!
Thanks Michael. It's watching people like you and Bishop Sheen, Mother Angelica, etc. that keeps me enduring through persecution. Thank you for speaking the truth without yielding. God bless you. I hope you and everyone at RealCatholicTV have an blessed Divine Mercy Sunday!
umm err the Roman Catholic Church did not put the Bible together. The Undivided Church of Christ put the Bible as in(i .e. Latin Catholic, Orthodox Catholic,Coptic Catholic). St. Athanasius of Alexandria letter in the year 367 which was the first known listing of the New Testament including all those books now accepted everywhere as the New Testament....The RCC as in todays church was not the sole who created the Bible...I am not including the Prost. who are not Catholic
@jkranites Of course the Catholic Church put the Bible together; because the Roman Catholic Church was the only Church then. The Church was unified and undivided then, and was unified and undivided under the pope, the bishop of Rome. The fact others fragmented off the body of Christ and became the Orthodox and the Coptics etc. doesn't change the fact the Roman Church was and is the original Church of Christ
@jkranites I'd hate to burst your bubble (please excuse my crassness), but the Church founded by Christ was actually called the Catholic Church by the disciples to the Apostles; that is, by the men ordained as priests and bishops by the Apostles. It's simply an historical fact and it's all in primary source documents.
@auzziesoceroo Yes, of course, that's why "Where does it say in the Bible that the only valid teachings are in the Bible?" followed up with a lesson about how the Bible wasn't finished until long after Christian teachings were spread through...you guessed it...TRADITION. :)
My girlfriend came into the Church on Easter. She says in the Protestant mind all "denominations" are working on the same evidence (the Bible) and coming to different conclusions. The Church looks very arrogant to Protestants when it says it has the truth.
The problem is that the Catholic church has a long history of tradition that points back directly to Christ, but most Protestants deny or are ignorant of this. I think we would do well to charitably point this out whenever possible.
Good clarification at the end about the intention being to assist others in finding the Truth.

Great Video, Michael.
I do believe the quotation is "The proof of the pudding is in the eating". Which may even be more a propos to what you are saying!

@mdlagreca Oxford World Christian Encyclopedia - Google "number of Protestant denominations". There is a great article on a website called "phillvaz"

This Evangelical Protestant kid keeps telling me that the Church used to kill people for reading the Bible and calling them "heretics"...
Then again, he's a protestant..
Another Protestant (same denomination) told me God Himself wrote the Bible... hehehe

I am surprised by the number of Christians that do not realize that the catholic church basically compelled and edited the books of the bible.

Not only that but protestantism has also spawned mormonism and the westboro baptist church. And people wonder why England expelled the pilgrims
