As a B'ham native, I was about to take gentle umbrage at your choice of song ... but I then realized you were headed straight for the 20/59-65 interchange lovingly known as "Malfunction Junction." I changed my mind. Good call. :-)
Major makeover? Shayet, it needs a Knoxville-style blow up and rebuild!
B'ham was humiliatingly slow at finishing its interstates - 20/59 was open to Tallapoosa St. in 1973. The trumpet split opened in '77, and I-20 was finally connected to Leeds in 1984 or 1985.
Can anybody tell me wny in the Southeast their is no truck restrictions on speed limits? If you do 70mph,a truck should be doing 60-65mph on interstates and Why no signs for trucks Right 2 Lanes Only in Metro Areas? Its amazing that you are doing 70mph and a semi truck is doing 75-80mph down the interstate
There are some rural three lane (six lane) highways in the east, I-75 in Georgia for example is 6 lanes or more for the entire 355 miles as well as in Florida to where the Turnpike branches off at Wildwood.
During my travels,it depends on the pacticular State for 3 Lanes, espically for truck traffic. i-65 in Kentucky is 6 lanes from Louisville to Elizabethtown and i-75 in Michigan 6 lanes from Detroit to Toledo
With so much truck travel on our interstates(Fed-Ex,Ups,Walmarts(past 40 of them in a hour)etc need more lanes to not cause backups on our interstates.
Me three! Also I find it ironic mine was 3 years before the earliest Toyota car affected by the recent recalls(which was 2005, as I've been paying close attention to the cars Toyota recalled).
Anyway, great video. I also laughed hard at seeing the Corolla racing with you at the beginning. He also (not) surprisingly took that trumpet 20/59 interchange a little fast, so I'm sure he hadn't had taken the car in for service yet. :)
Yeah, it's definitely one of the most annoying "traits" of some American drivers...although many are good at utilizing the passing lane for passing only, and moving back over to let faster traffic move by.
Most drivers do use the right lane and then the left to pass but it only takes one to hold up the freeway but ofcourse it isn't a law to keep right it is just common sense.
Actually, believe it or not, but in many states, it *is* the law. In Oklahoma, for example, the state patrol is fairly stringent on drivers keeping right, except to pass, and I personally saw 1 driver get pulled over, 'cause he was by himself in the left lane for a good 5 miles.
I know Illinois enforces KRETP as well, but not as stringent as Oklahoma. Oregon and Washington State do so on a sporadic basis.
Out here in California, it's not a law, but rather an advistory. ::sigh::
Before even watching the first second of the video footage itself, I took note of the skyline in your picture. That's literally the best picture I've ever seen of the Birmingham skyline.
First time I've ever heard that song; catchy tune
I've always liked that I-20/I-459 stack; I've seen it in numerous pictures.
Looks like a pretty neat and mostly well-designed 8 lane freeway (the I-20/I-59 duplex).
Isn't this also the busiest freeway in the State of Alabama??
lol hold on man you to go go east to get to hell (ATLANTA,GA)

I'll be honest, I only used the song because it fit from a tempo standpoint and it was the right length :)
Freewayjim 2 years ago
No harm done! That's one of my favorite Chris Rea tracks, anyway.
I'm enjoying your Birmingham videos (if getting a bit homesick).

Some places do have left lane restrictions.
In the Atlanta area all through trucks are banned inside I-285.

Great vid!!...
I wonder if in (USA), three-lane highways connect cities in different states or only found in urban centers and metropolitan areas.

Boy that silver Toyota Corolla in the begining sure was in a rush to go nowhere.. Maybe his accelerator was stuck lol..

...ha, don't say that; I have a Toyota Corolla as well. ::gulp:: 69,000 miles and no issues, thus far, but you just never quite know...

I'll never get used to the American idea of using any old lane!
localdriver 2 years ago
If some drivers would adhere to simple lane discipline the rest of us would not use "any old lane"

The I-20/I-65 interchange is one of the weirdest I've seen (that is not some kind of spaghetti interchange).
aswchris 2 years ago
I like the interchange with i-65, lots of speed changes 60,50 and 70mph SWof the city back to a 2 lane interstate to i-459,Great Job buy Freeway Jim

Yeah I-65 and I-459 carry less traffic.
aswchris 2 years ago
Thanks,
I would guess either that or I-65 through the city is the busiest freeway in the state.
The stack at I-65/459 (coming in a future video) is more impressive, a little more spread out.
As for the skyline, there is a better view from the flyover ramp leaving US-31/280 to I-20/59 West that you'll see in a future video.
