Devestatingly beautiful..the marriage of song and artist is just stunning...I don't have any of her albums from the early 70's , I"m stuck in Arlen-land, but i need to start getting them.starting with this.
Bab’s is the ultimate and always will be. She has always been perfection. But I would love to hear Linda Eder perform this. I have seen both Bab’s and Linda in concert and while Bab’s always gives me chills, Linda makes me cry. She has an incredible powerful and perfect pitch and range that will blow you away. She and Bab’s should do a duet. It would blow speakers apart.
WOW!! I have heard Ms. McCoos version many many times, but never heard Ms. Streisand sing it. She does a TREMENDOUS job!! I'm gettin' goosebumps because it reminds me of the 60's when I was a young kid!! Just the arrangement, the instrumentation, her voice, everything.
Barbara's good, but Marilyn McCoo owns this song. No contest there. And I agree, Babs sounds off in the first few bars. Believe it or not, singing wasn't even what Barbra liked most, it was acting that was her favorite. She sang to pay the bills.

Glee? Barbara Streisand? THE FIFTH DIMENSIONS DID THIS IN 1970!!!!!! HOLY FRAK!!!! The second half was covered, quite bloody well - I might say - by the late Luther Vandross (A House is Not A Home). Interesting how they bled together here. Barbara still sounds really good. I like it.
When Barbra sings this song her voice is so powerful that the melody of this song can not simply keep up with Barbra..she is literally wanting to blow this song away and that tells you what kind of voice Barbra has...simply outstanding.
There was, in fact, life before Glee. LOL. Streisand just nails this by having a duet with the only vocalist who is in her leauge......Streisand! Babs doing Bacharach, are you kidding me? It does not get any better than this! FYI, I love Glee, too. The Matthew Morrison-Kristin Chenoweth duet was TV magic!
Love both Barbara & Marilyn's versions. Barbara's usual soaring & theatrical version works as does Marilyn's more raw soulful version. Although not a great fan of most of Glees reinditions I was moved by Glees version of this song.
you will also note they lifted the happy days are here again duet from Streisand and Garland, right down to the outfit BS wore on the TV show where she appeared with July
I am not a real big Streisand fan but this medley is about as good as it gets ... her talent is beyongd reproach ... add a Bacharach composition and you have musical magic ...
@RochelletheRealtor ...chalk another one up for the McCoo version. Streisand has always been about the voice, McCoo's voice matches hers and her version is just better, probably a lot of it is that I don't particularly like easy listening. McCoo's version also crowds easy listening territory but the arrangement and backing vocals of the 5th Dimension give it more bite, at least to these ears.

Thank-you for giving us yet another GREAT Babs moment... Loved her most in her five and dime days but... she's still the top to me. Oh and as much as I am enjoying "Rachel" in Glee (she IS pretty great), I agree with Vocal Adrenaline lead's comment about Rachel's rendition of Don't Rain on my Parade lacking Barbra's depth... that was a given... but I am glad he cleared it up none the less...hehe.
One less egg to fry...i really like the Bacharach and David songs...I'll never forget their memorable music and lyrics. Im brazilian and we grew up listening our music (bossa nova...) and the american standards. Lorena - SP

babs need to guest star on glee. they clearly love her, what with making dont rain on my parade the big mid-season finale (even though no one in the target demographic probably recognized it, being too young). they've already gotten idina, kristin, and neil patrick harris...all they need is babs.
This recording from the "Barbra Joan Streisand" album, and "Since I fell for you" from the same album, are in my opinion, THE most fantastic and beautiful female vocalist numbers ever.
I noticed glee used the same arrangement aswell. Glee did it brilliantly. One of the best episodes but if your going to use bacharac songs your going to do well. class.

@snubblebunny OK, I get that in England a "mate" is a friend, and "bloody" does not necessarily pertain to plasma, and even that a "fag" is a cigiarette .... but what the hell is a "chavlike"?
@mikesterSTLMO lol i mean i live in an area that is very...um... non commerical... look up chav and Ali G and u have a good mix of the culture i'm emmersed in, i'm not exactly the most culturally standout-ish when it comes to representing that culture. i'm pretty much a 67 year old in a 22 year olds body lol, Chav is a status here so i just meant chavlike in a sense of the circles i run in, either way, this is amazing (the vid)
@snubblebunny I love to think that a chav appreciates a song like this. And that you think you might be a 67yo in a 22yo body. I'm more the other way, 25yo in a 52yo body. Onya mate! I hope you appreciate Streisand as well.
@mikesterSTLMO Well I certainly noticed it in about a nanosecond, primed perhaps by Kurt's earlier rendition of A House is not a Home (It was Kurt wasn't it?.....) It's my favourite song from the first album of Babs that I ever heard. The whole album is a constant joy to listen to.
@BambiAnneDear Barbra Joan was a real thrilling time in Barbra's career as she was transitioning into glam pop rock. I have neve tired of it either. BTW, you have a most interesting, beautiful, and unique screen name:--)
@mikesterSTLMO Not bad is it? Try the initials. It's a performing name I've used. I just re-registered here and all variations of my usual screen name were not available.
This is a great rendition of the 5th Dimension's original song but sorry Barbra, as much as I love you to death, Marilyn McCoo's voice is unmatched. Her voice is so superlative that it's not even earhtly, it's lies more in the realms of being Supenatural.....
I like all of this, but that moment at 5:57 when she sings a duet with herself is just amazing.
It makes logical sense that one person's voice should resonate with that same voice, but it still makes all the little hairs on the back of my neck stand up.
Good...but Marilyn has more heart. In fact, playing both versions to my teens they gave a "thumbs up" to Marilyn;s version. Me too! This version is all about Barbara's voice and not the character of the song. .
Having listened to both versions, I can only say that those who love Ms Streisand, will love this awesome interpretation. For myself, loving Marilyn as I do, her version, " The 5D", still brings me to tears. You are both icons, beautiful & angels among us. GBY to you both. Wolfsky9
Marilyn's version is for the radio listening public--keep it short and sweet....Barbra's is more of a sweeping interpretation....both very very good.....
I've listened to both Babs and Ms McCoo's renditions of this piece and I have to say Barbra owns this piece, the range and power, sensitivity and depth of her voice outshines all would-be divas on this song. (All due respect to Ms. McCoo's beautiful performance as well) This is the studio recording yes? The performance she did of this song on the Burt Bacharach Show displays Barbra even better than this, (doesn't seem possible huh? but it IS! :) Beautiful clips of Babs here too(what a babe!)
I actually appreciate the difference in quality between this rendition and that of 5th Dimension. I don't agree at all (clearly we're all entitled to our opinions) that Barbra's version lacks soul. She's a completely different person than Ms.McCoo, so it makes sense that the mood of the song may change. And even if her voice doesn't do it for you, the instrumentation alone is enough for me.....i love it.
Barbra's version here doesn't compare to the 5th Dimension's - because it doesn't have the same soul - plain and simple. Sorry Babs - you have an incredible voice - but didn't do this song justice.
Barbara Streisands tonality and voice sounds the same throughout the words of many songs -listen carefully and you'll hear - it's tiresome and boring. A much better rendition of 'One Less Bell to Answer' is by Marylin McCoo of the Fifth Dimension!
Barbara Streisand surprised me with her excellent rendition of B. Bacharach classic. I thought 5th Dimension version was definitive one, but now I am in two minds.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
i like 5th dimension better as well. However, this woman and what she does with her voice is mind boggling, when its clear that is. Its her dang nose that gets in the way. She gets to nasally sometimes. Her voice is amazing though. There is not a single person on earth, at least I know of, that has more vocal control over a wider rang of pitch than Barbara Streisand does. I would like this version of the song better if that dang nose tone didn't bit me in the ass ever 20 words or so.
Obviously, you are completely, ridiculously, and clearly, Not musically knowledgeable YouSpamTard! Nasal tones? I think your huge ears must have a lot of gooey, yellowish green, wax. So full of it! I wish whatever you think you hear should not only BITE you in the ass, you should get a good swift kick in the ass. Go watch TV and play Solitaire instead of listening to music. You have no idea what you're talking about.
I know for years she debated with herself and doctors about if she got a nose job to help her looks some, would it affect the sound of her voice. Of course it would, so she never did get the nose job. You are a stupid fuck spamtard know it all know shit dumb fuck Sheesh911. I grew up with this woman and have been listening to her for some 45 years or so, dumb fuck know it all, dumb fuck spamtard troll.
This is one of my favorite Streisand songs. And i find the "Barbra Joan Streisand" Album to be one of her finest. She´s truly terrific yesterday, today and always. I love you Babra Streisand.
i dont pick up after men, they pick up after me(if"men"is what you want to call 'em).anyway, notice how the girl in the song gets used and dumped.that's what she gets for being a doormat with no self respect. barbara steisand has a great voice and a great face .
Barbra, I wish only that you & The 5-D with Marilyn, could have done this magnificent song together; that would have been a duet for the ages. You---Marilyn--it would have been music Heaven. Wolfsky9
My older sister had this album in the early 60's and I remember sneaking in to her room to listen to this song over and over again. Barbra is fantastic
I'm thinking it must have been 'People" I listened to in the 60's since this came out in '71. LOL I did listen to this quite a bit but it had to have been after 71.
True. Today being a singer is first being a Popstar--the image. Madonna, for example, would never have made it without the press and TV and MTV (especially) to sell her Image., thus, compensating for real talent....like Streisand's. What is amazing that, with her off-bear looks (that is, Image)Streisand STILL truly made it....on great talent alone.
@eldiran2 ...I think your assessment of Madonna is a little 1/2 baked. Just because she was an unapologetic skank from day 1, she has endured a lot of unwarranted prejudice against her ballads, which rank among the best of the post-Elvis era. It is hard to imagine anyone bettering "Live to Tell" or "Crazy for You," especially Streisand.
But this is like comparing apples to oranges. Streisand does easy listening and broadway material mostly whereas Madonna is a straight pop singer.
@911insidejo8 Point made. But labeling Streisand as "Easy Listening" (which is done now, after the fact, about all 50's/60's ballad singers, Sinatra, et al) is misleading and inaccurate. Perhaps you aren't aware that her earlier work was a bit jazzy, and that she had a couple albums of Rock, one of Classical, and the 2 Broadway albums came much later in her career. Madonna is, by contrast, pure Pop, nothing more.
Both versions are wonderful, & express the aching loss of this song. I've also wondered if anyone could/ would, sing a song like this on that "Idol" show--I fear not. too much class. Wolfsky9
No doubt this is the best female singer in my life time. Only Frank and Dean can come close.
God made this woman the way she is. Why he made her the best singer ever and a complete fool at the same time is something I will never understand. It's his call. Thanks Jesus
Probably would be a week 1 elimination on American Idol. Shame that people don't have this type of music generally available to them to see how good music can be.
After listening to this twice.I think I understand her meaning now !!! The feeling was never known till I heard this WONDERFUL song.....Remember !!!!!!

BambiAnneDear 1 year ago
@BambiAnneDear Barbra Joan was a real thrilling time in Barbra's career as she was transitioning into glam pop rock. I have neve tired of it either. BTW, you have a most interesting, beautiful, and unique screen name:--)

@mikesterSTLMO Not bad is it? Try the initials. It's a performing name I've used. I just re-registered here and all variations of my usual screen name were not available.

Saw it on Glee, and while noone and nothing can compare to The Barbra,
the duet on Glee was outstanding, gorgeous harmony!!! The whole show
was beautiful music!

It makes logical sense that one person's voice should resonate with that same voice, but it still makes all the little hairs on the back of my neck stand up.
jlmww 1 year ago 3
I love Barbara, but Marilyn owns this with all her soul!
notbatman1000 1 year ago
@notbatman1000 I think that you are right. Barbara is excellent in this medley, but I am still think of Marilyn McCoo.
jackr2010 1 year ago
Good...but Marilyn has more heart. In fact, playing both versions to my teens they gave a "thumbs up" to Marilyn;s version. Me too! This version is all about Barbara's voice and not the character of the song. .

Barbra Streisand is unsurpassed. I don't think I've ever heard a voice so beautiful.

Having listened to both versions, I can only say that those who love Ms Streisand, will love this awesome interpretation. For myself, loving Marilyn as I do, her version, " The 5D", still brings me to tears. You are both icons, beautiful & angels among us. GBY to you both. Wolfsky9

Marilyn's version is for the radio listening public--keep it short and sweet....Barbra's is more of a sweeping interpretation....both very very good.....
naturaltoby 2 years ago
Both done very well ... different but well done ... Personally I like Sheryl Crowes version ... but more importantly was Bacharach/David 's ability !
ahstc1973 2 years ago
I've listened to both Babs and Ms McCoo's renditions of this piece and I have to say Barbra owns this piece, the range and power, sensitivity and depth of her voice outshines all would-be divas on this song. (All due respect to Ms. McCoo's beautiful performance as well) This is the studio recording yes? The performance she did of this song on the Burt Bacharach Show displays Barbra even better than this, (doesn't seem possible huh? but it IS! :) Beautiful clips of Babs here too(what a babe!)
scryabin 2 years ago 2
I actually appreciate the difference in quality between this rendition and that of 5th Dimension. I don't agree at all (clearly we're all entitled to our opinions) that Barbra's version lacks soul. She's a completely different person than Ms.McCoo, so it makes sense that the mood of the song may change. And even if her voice doesn't do it for you, the instrumentation alone is enough for me.....i love it.
msexpresspeace 2 years ago 2
Barbra's version here doesn't compare to the 5th Dimension's - because it doesn't have the same soul - plain and simple. Sorry Babs - you have an incredible voice - but didn't do this song justice.
Bazzaland 2 years ago
Barbara Streisands tonality and voice sounds the same throughout the words of many songs -listen carefully and you'll hear - it's tiresome and boring. A much better rendition of 'One Less Bell to Answer' is by Marylin McCoo of the Fifth Dimension!

i like 5th dimension better as well. I would like this version of the song better if that dang nose tone didn't bit me in the ass ever 20 words or so.

funny but well said...an incredible voice indeed..
ItzMeOB 2 years ago

True. Today being a singer is first being a Popstar--the image. Madonna, for example, would never have made it without the press and TV and MTV (especially) to sell her Image., thus, compensating for real talent....like Streisand's. What is amazing that, with her off-bear looks (that is, Image)Streisand STILL truly made it....on great talent alone.
eldiran2 2 years ago
@eldiran2 ...I think your assessment of Madonna is a little 1/2 baked. Just because she was an unapologetic skank from day 1, she has endured a lot of unwarranted prejudice against her ballads, which rank among the best of the post-Elvis era. It is hard to imagine anyone bettering "Live to Tell" or "Crazy for You," especially Streisand.
But this is like comparing apples to oranges. Streisand does easy listening and broadway material mostly whereas Madonna is a straight pop singer.
911insidejo8 1 year ago
@911insidejo8 Point made. But labeling Streisand as "Easy Listening" (which is done now, after the fact, about all 50's/60's ballad singers, Sinatra, et al) is misleading and inaccurate. Perhaps you aren't aware that her earlier work was a bit jazzy, and that she had a couple albums of Rock, one of Classical, and the 2 Broadway albums came much later in her career. Madonna is, by contrast, pure Pop, nothing more.

No doubt this is the best female singer in my life time. Only Frank and Dean can come close.
God made this woman the way she is. Why he made her the best singer ever and a complete fool at the same time is something I will never understand. It's his call. Thanks Jesus
