ALL the time I listen to this song and hear that slow, crushing guitar play I think of slow sex scenes in movies. Something just passionate. Mars Volta is otherworldly.
IMO this is mars volta's most "psychedelic" track... all of their music is pretty psychedelic but this one just transports me to another planet every time I hear it
@ChordsFromTheVoid Concertina is more psychedelic to me, really. Maybe cause I was high as a motherfucker in the hospital from a surgery, but hey, good music nonetheless.
this track is just genious. It puts me in the most euphoric mood, releasing me from the stresses of daily life. Some people couldn't understand this music its OK,
your a dumbass if you dont like this music, the Mars Volta are hear because their needs to be a change in music...they're ahead of their time.."VIVA MARS VOLTA PUTOS!!!"
I really didn't get this. Can someone explain this to me? I sat and I listened to the entire thing, just really trying to get into it, but it didn't go anywhere, it didn't move me, it didn't showcase anything resembling any spirit, or emotion. Any attempt to set a mood was shot because the lack of structure made the song consistently interrupted itself without presenting a cohesive musical idea. please, someone help me to understand this?
@Locothrope buy the cd, turn off the lights and press play. this is how i got into the song. at first listen i couldnt get it either, especially this first solo, but when the vocals come in it gets better. it's haunting, sad and beautiful at the same time. And the part starting in 5:25 is just jizz in my pants, when it turns into tetragrammaton. Jesus Amputechture is their best work. It may take time to get it because of the lack of catchy chours and lenghty songs, but it's worth the try.
@Locothrope I think we are just used to listen to short songs, and very repetitive, if you listen to beethoven for example, he broke the standards with his lengthy symphonies trying to overcome himself everytime, I think this is the concept, and also there's no lack of emotion, I think this is all very emotional, think about your regular day, we are a mess of emotions, we feel happy, sad, surprised and many other things in one day, that's what mars volta is all about, the chaos of emotions. IMHO
I’m actually kind of impressed around six and a half minutes in, because I have never, ever heard a guitar made to sound so much like a cat being run through the dryer.
Dude, this song intro would kick ass in a retro futuristic anime about a falling society of socialites with a lone badass as the main charcater smokin' a marlboro red
I fucking love this record and this song is perhaps my favorite on the album. Great haunting and beautiful opener. I especially love the part where Cedric sings: "I regret not killing you while I had the chance..." I love everything about this album, the music, the cover, the opener, the approach, everything.
I agree with Whospodcast01, I prefer warhol's marylin over the mona lisa any day, despite the fact that the mona lisa is the most technically brilliant painting in the world, im sure if Omar was aiming for technical brilliance he would have taken a different musical path many years ago
@TakeItBrendanLSD it's not about the complexity of the licks, it's about the emotion it provokes, about the image it coveyes. For someone who's name is associated with such a potent conciousness enhancing ethogen, i would think you might have a bit more creative insights. Omar rodrigues is not the most amazingly technical guitar player but he does a great job of doing what he intends to do. He conveys images, he's an auditory painter. have some respect.
@TakeItBrendanLSD You've gotten a lot of shit for that. I'm glad you're conscious of it though. Keep it as real as real is to you in your subjective perception.
@Whospodcast01 Frusciante played on this track, although Rodriguez showed him what to play. As a die hard Frusciante fan, I felt the need to tell you.
Would you rather him be an all technical guitarist with no vision of the music and where it goes? I'm not sure why you act like everything he does should be complex. He's not Allan Holdsworth, man. He is playing/paying attention to the atmosphere of the song more than the complexity of it. If he went crazy on this song it would have thrown off the entire feeling of the song and overall sound of the song. Do you crucify Mozart for writing "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" too?
@ba11in612 All TMV is for shrooming. I listened to Deloused all the way through while was tripping on shrooms on my birthday. It was so incredible, a very spiritual experience.
