I agree on both percpectives, but I wavor more to the Christian Perscpective, we all think we're good people. According to Scripture -“There is no one righteous, not even one.” (Rom 3:10) And the only way to life, is through Jesus Christ, -“I am the way the truth, the way, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6) So we can store all this stuff on the earth but it's not going with us when we Die.
...However, I think we should look at the meaning from a broader perspective. If you go through life, and don't contribute much to the common good of people, once you are approaching your mortality, you may realize how insignificant and unhelpful you were to the world. Not being bad, "I never killed, I never store", does not contribute to being good, "I kept my spare change and my pride."
You say good deeds aren't important, well I would argue that the two lines I just quoted would disagree.
I'll probably get some flak for this, as I know most thrice fans are christian, but I'ma say it anyway.
I'm an atheist who loves thrice, some of their songs have lyrics that I disagree with, but on the whole their songs are great and deep.
Referring to soccerwez1, when he is talking about how he thinks this song "screams Christianity": That is the great thing about music, songs can have many meanings, whatever you can relate it to. ...
With all due respect, I would like to throw my two cents out there and say this....
I would argue that songs don't have different meanings. Most, if not all, writers write with a specific purpose and message to get across....being a writer myself, I know this to be true. I do think that people may relate to the same song differently based on their own life experiences, but that doesn't mean that the meaning of the song changes.......
I agree and disagree. Just because the song writer is thinking one thing doesn't mean that is it's only meaning. A milk crate is designed to carry milk bottles, but they are used to store many other things, even act as stools. Are you telling me that their purpose stays the same? No, purpose and meaning are relative.
The meaning of this song is pretty clear. Dustin is describing a man who thinks that he has lived a good life, but he is measuring himself according to his own standards....not God's. Many people do this...and it is very dangerous because wrong is wrong, and there is no getting around it. Dustin is a Christian, and most of his songs do refer to stories in the Bible or general Christian lifestyles.
If you don't mind me asking, why are you an atheist?
The character is measuring his life and comes to the conclusion that he hasn't lived a good life, by his own standards. There is no reason this song needs to have anything to do with religion, just good vs. neutral.
Yes I know Dustin is a christian, and I know a lot of their songs do. I used to be a christian or I probably wouldn't ever have liked this band. Not all of their songs have a religious overtone though.
I don't mind you asking, but can we take it off this page? PM me if you want.
Thrice is a great band, however, the way they compose music isnt as intricate as they were. The guitar in "To Awake and Avenge the Dead" was amazing. Their new music sounds generic.
...good works isn't the issue because we all fall short of the biblical model. We can't earn our salvation. In fact, the bible regards our best work as "filthy rags" before God. What I believe Dustin is trying to say is, WHAT IF the biblical model is correct? Then anyone who thinks that good works or "all I've done" can earn salvation is sadly mistaken if/when we meet our maker.
Of course, I do understand that it could simply be about denying personal hedonism and living for others.
This song isn't just about doing more good and generous things-- though I can understand that interpretation from a secular perspective.
But IMO Its about an individual that not only has lived for himself, but he has denied God for his selfish pride and the temporal. He has no fear of God because he's lived his life comparing himself to others in this world.
But what I think Dustin is trying to portray is that...
I get where you're coming from. But to me it reads as an indictment of a decadent culture that squanders its resources and ignores the suffering around it. What is it that they say? 10% of the worlds population consuming 90% of its resources, how long can that last?
People, be nice to other people or you will regret it.

I am particularly fond of "A Torch to End All Torches". Specially that slow part with the gang vocals!
