  • I hope to go back up the mountain and will take an HD camcorder to record the switch and more in HD detail.

  • theres 10

  • i always wondered how a cog railway switch looked like not to mention operate...thanks for post this vid..its really something how they figured out how to get it all to work...i got lost for a sec after step 3..lol..awsome vid just amazing!!

  • there is something called cars that go faster and don't need to do 9 things to turn

  • @badgerfan2674 big negative on both of those things, trains can go just as fast, if not faster. Check out the bullet trains. Also, as for the 9 steps to turn, only on cog tracks like this. Normal rails can be switched with a button.

  • @badgerfan2674 I would like to see you get a car to operate on the grades these things are designed to work on......

  • What ever happend to the standard switch with a frog?

  • @Bassotronics Every Cog railway I've ever seen had complicated switches. Its due to the rack rail needing to be there as well.

  • ok it's switched pay me now......

  • well this switch is fro a mountain railway so they cant put a reg switch due to the rack rail

  • That is exausting

  • thank God they replaced those with a transfer-like switch

  • Interesting!

    Why #3?

  • @robertgift That's a good question. It's because of a large spinning gear underneath the locomotive, almost scraping the ground. In addition to two rails and a rack, the spur gear must have a clear path, too.

  • @NKP514 Oh. Thanks, NKP.

Wish the camcoder had been zoomed to see the more distant details at thend.

  • Not to use in commons railways ...

  • They never made a mistake ?

  • now can you imagine this on a grand scale on a huge freight yard lol. man that be a work out.

  • @SaberTanker22 Actually, this is a different type of track, the railroad in a freight yard has a mechanism which you pull and it is done.

  • @LordoftheKaty yes lord sir i a wear of this just i was making a point of how hard it would be if they where all done this way =P

  • @SaberTanker22 Hahaha, misconception. But if it makes you feel better, imagine back in the 1870's when they had track going up the mountains, and the track zigzags and the train has to constantly stop in treacherous weather for the switchman to go out and switch the track, one after the other for the train to go up one grade of track, to another until they make it off the mountain.

  • @LordoftheKaty so what do you mean by misconception i don't know about 1870's era seeing i wasn't born to 1986 with was near the end of the steam age hopefully am not wrong about that lol.

  • @SaberTanker22 I mean misconception because I thought you meant that was how all track switching is.

  • holy shit!! man i have never seen a switch like that before. Pretty interesting. Thanks for posting. You sayin the steps as he does them takes away the confusion.

  • hi, the movies is excellent, thanks ★★★★★

  • alex got fired

  • And they all have to be turned in this order as well...? Nice work.

  • yes they do. I hope to go up again and film it in HD. Stay tuned

  • if u film it again instead of from straight to curved do that the opposite. way from curved to straight

  • Make a Cog Railway yard and use the switching as capitol punishment. :P

  • yep, thats my family

  • wow did I film someone in your family?

  • I hope all their assistants can count that far!!!

  • Nice Video where is this line? Joe in Florida USA

  • This is ON MT Washington, New Hampshire

  • Wonder what you were confused by. Mostly just a matter of memorizing the steps to do to convert the track by moving parts around. It is amazing.

  • I am confused by trying to visualize, independent of the video, the different styles of switch packed so close together and how they interact

  • On cog railways, when going from adhesion section to rack section can the cog jam, ie toth to toth contact rather than tooth to slot?

Or is some kind of syncro mesh used?

  • lol. thats awesome.

  • That is incredible! I have never seen anything like that. My friend worked at the cog (and is in this) and could only try to explain in to me. Now I am just more confused.

  • kelly or alex

  • yea kelly or alex
