It's really not one of the best spielberg movie. It is enjoyable with some unforgettable scenes like the end in John ford style or the horse vs the tank but characters have have a big lack of charisma and in time of war some of them are fucking naive
Saw it yesterday... I wanted to like this movie but i almost hated it. The acting is horrible (albert, french girl and her grandfather). 60% of the movie felt like it was a disney movie (the music, conversations with the horse, and a lot of dialog). Spielberg could have casted some actors that actually talked german or french. What i did like was ofcourse the scene with the two soldiers, that was genius. tom hiddleston, he was the best thing in this movie. And the war scenes were really great.
Hey Schmoes! I'm returning to this review because I saw War Horse yesterday, and I'm totally with Mark on this one. I LOVED this movie, more than I expected to. Maybe I'm sentimental, but I thought this movie was great! I love the cinematography, the score, the landscapes, the horses, the story, everything. I think the Best Picture nomination is justified.
Mark, I've noticed that your lower scores are much more specific, but when you get to the really good stuff you go right for the 4.5 or 5. I think it'd be more fair if you gave this movie something like a 4.87 because those are the vibes I'm getting. I haven't seen it, but it has 4.87 written all over it. Cop out review.
The only Spielberg film I have not seen in the theater during the last 22 years is The Terminal...and that was only because I was out of work in 2004 and low on cash. I'm seeing both of these.
Did you know that this is the FIFTH time Spielberg has released two movies he's directed the same year? 1989 (The Last Crusade and Always), 1993 (Jurassic Park and Schindler's List), 1997 (The Lost World and Amistad), 2005 (War of the Worlds and Munich) and now 2011!
We enjoy your reviews, humans. We find it strange that humans would make a movie about a horse, but I think that you have convinced us robots to give it a chance. Thank you for expanding our robot brains.
I have no interest at all in watching this. A touchy feel'ly story were the star is a house...really not my kinda movie at all. Glad yas enjoyed it tho
I already saw Tintin and thought it was good, but nothing special as for this I will be seeing this. Origianlly I wasn't very excited but this review kind of started a little flame of excitement haha.
After these scores I'll have to go see it now. Normally this would be the type of movie I'd wait catch on disc, but I suspect the war scenes will look amazing on the big screen.
I'm excited for this movie. Just curious do you guys plan on doing a review for the dark knight rises' new trailer. It got me even more pumped for it.
5 out of 5. Man im sold. Must see this movie. Besides, its Steven Speilberg, not executive Producer or some crap, but Directing, sorta have to see this movie.
I think I'd like War Horse more than TinTin...only because I'm more of a live action lover...but I really wish the movie wasn't about a horse, because I think horse's brains are too small to control their entire body and that they're dumb (no offense to those who think otherwise). I'd probably like it better if it was about a dog, which, well , you can't ride on...Still probably going to see it =)
i'm so glad this movie is great. from all the trailers and advertisements it looked like it sucked. just goes to show never judge a movie by its trailer!
OK, so is this horse just a normal, regular horse, or is he so humanised that you are waiting for him to speak any second? Don't get me wrong, I love animals, but I hate when we impose too much human traits onto them, they are perfect just as they are.
Can you guys please, please, please, please stop putting trailers in your reviews? Or can you put the whole trailer there AT ONE POINT and like put an annotation telling us when the trailers over? because I like watching movies without trailers
This looks amazing, to bad that it just comes out in February on my country. What's your thought on Steven Spielberg not been nominate for best director at the golden globes?
@schmoesknow ahhh guys. We just finished our politics unit. I would of totally excepted that. Sorry :) maybe when I take political science next year. But your welcome to make smear ads about each other and have Schmoeville vote for a President Schmoe. It be a fun idea but I hope you two gentlemen would run a clean race ;) just a thought.
I'm glad I can agree with you guys on War Horse. I saw both this and Tintin at advance screenings, and this is by far the best one. Currently it's my #4 favorite movie of the year behind Warrior, Hugo, and The Artist.
Lol you got the first few facts entirely wrong. One war horse is based off a book by michael morpurgo whih was also adapted into a play. And also speilberg went to see the play and he said i want to direct a movie to do with this :l Oh well apart from that, great review :)
A movie with a horse?....Again? What is it about horses, dogs and dolphins that inspire people to make movies about them? And it's not that i don't trust your judgement... If you're saying it's good, it's good... But horses, World War II, animal-human relationship are all worn out subjects and it doesn't look like War Horse gives a new perspective on those matters... But i haven't watched it so i won't rush into conclusions.
@legendlover91 To be fair this was a novel that was adapted into a very successful, award-winning play; so it's not as if some film executives came up with the idea, out of the blue. And it's world war 1, not 2 (horses weren't used in the battlefield in WWII). I do understand your point about animal-human relationships being well-tread ground in movies but I think that if you had seen the play you might have a different perspective. I just hope the film lives up to it!
@jungsbodyguard Oooh... First of all thanks for the correction (stupid mistake:))! And secondly, thanks a lot for the extra info... The truth is that i hadn't heard about this movie at all and i had no clue of its origins so i was just basing my comment on a first impression... I don't know about the movie ( i don't even know if it will be screened in my country) but you now got me interested and i might try reading the novel!
I'll probably wait to see tintin on DVD and I wasnt even going to watch war horse despite the fact that it's a Spielberg movie. It looked a little cliche and formulaic. but I guess I have to go see it if it got a 4.5 and a 5...
Did you really just mention Eternia & Battlecat? Wow! You guys always surprise me with some geeky reference I would probably make in a similar situation.
Giving a film a 5 doesn't have to make it your favourite film. I would give something like avatar or saving private ryan a 5 but they are not my fave movies.
im wanna see war horse and ill see tintin on bluray and go so the girl with the dragon tattoo which i cant wait for and i cant wait for your review on it, hopefully david fincher does it again
Oh Mark, you know how much I love Cumberbatch. I'm such a BenADDICT. anyway. Can't wait to see this! I downloaded the Williams music a week ago and it's so beautiful. I even used it in my political ad in my government class. Needless to say, got me a round of applause. Wants to see this so bad, I might skip out on seeing my crazy family and sneak into the theater. Oh and Guys! I SERIOUSLY recommend you guys watching Sherlock. Cumberbit_ch out!
@DjHamHam411 If there's a week in your Gov class about smear campaigns, can Harloff and I make ads against each other?? "Kristian says he cares about the environment..."
I love when one of you does the "Bang" 5/5 Schmoes, haha. This movie looks great; love Spielberg and Williams! I don't know if I'll see either in theaters, but if I had to pick between this and Tintin, I'm going War Horse. btw, Ellis, I saw a Sarah McLachlan commercial earlier for dogs and cats in the animal shelter, lol.
Those are some high schmoes there. I wasn't really interested in seeing this movie before. Movies about horses really don't appeal to me. I think I'll be checking this out now. Tin Tin. on the other hand, will probably be a rental.
Man, I would love to see Spielberg make a movie based on the true events of the USS Indianapolis ( the story Shaw was telling in Jaws) That event was absolutely terrifying. It would be an incredible way for Spielberg to come full circle.
@donniedarkodevotte Check out our podcast w/ David Gambino (president of Robert Downey Jr's company)...some news about a USS Indianapolis movie coming up... :) -Ellis
Surprised at Ellis' 5. Anyway, my interest for Spielberg's movies is growing the more films I've seen of his (can't believe I've put some of them off for so long), so I'm very excited for this film.
@CaliCriticReviews You know how I hate giving out perfect scores, but this one earned it...146 minutes long and it flew by. Hope you like it dude! -Ellis
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
So sad... I thought you guys would be able to see past the sentimental, pull at your heart strings bullshit that Spielberg's been churning out lately. There's absolutely nothing subtle about it. After this, if you guys don't give Dragon Tattoo a 5..... I'll be very disappointed.
@grindhouse141 Well my friend, we have known this about us and you. You are a loyal subscriber and one of the things that has always been great, we hardly ever agree. But you are the perfect example of someone who expresses their difference in opinion in a fun way and a way that we envisioned when we started this channel. That being said. WAR HORSE RULES :)
Ignore that idiot. I've read his comments and he's just an immature smart ass that insults people because they don't like the movies he likes. You guys are more than welcome to enjoy the movies you enjoy. @schmoesknow
I will definitely be seeing both Spielberg movies. He's my favorite director of all time so these are required viewing for me. haha Glad to hear it's as amazing as I thought it would be!
@Lordi465 Yup, I think this and Toy Story 3 are the only ones of the last 2 years. I guess I'm stingy...maybe I'll be visited by 3 ghosts on Christmas and change my ways??
@schmoesknow Aside from Dragon Tattoo, Tintin and Mission: Impossible 4, my dad and I CANNOT WAIT to see this. I have been anticipating since I first heard that Spielberg was making it.
Speaking of M: I 4, I don't know if you got my comment on your Box Office Sunday board, but, my dad and I are going to the IMAX theater at Universal Studios to see it.
I don't know what theater you guys went to to see it, but, is the prologue playing at the IMAX theater at Universal Studios. I'm just curious

@mhammer1777 Well, actually you should take your own advice, since YOUR opinion is not the definitive one. Try not to be so self-important next time.

Great review guys, as usual! I'm definitely seeing both Spielberg movies. And I was shocked that Ellis gave this a perfect rating.
