Schon and Cain should have changed the band's name. Journey is not, nor will they ever be they same without Perry. He brought a sound to Journey that made them successful. They were nothing before Perry and they are nothing now, but a generic shell of the band they once were.

Arnel is a good singer. Certainly doesn't sound like Perry, but he's not tryin to emulate or copy Steve Perry. He's just has a voice that fits good with Journey. But my heart still goes for Steve Perry and Journey.

For those who think they know the personnel matters of Journey, guess what? Its none of your business. Broken hips rarely heal 100%. He'll never walk the same again. Its a matter of how much pain he can endure for touring. That's his personal choice, and I can't say I blame him. Sure, he can sing for other recordings but when has he toured? He hasn't. I don't blame him for retiring, as a matter of fact, he's more than earned it.

@newERNIEifyJourney I don't have an answer as to why you didn't hear about him prior to Arnel. He's been performing with Journey since the late 70s, they became enormously popular in the 80s, took a break, went back to performing in the mid 90s, then SP was injured in an accident so he retired.
@jannisares Steve Perry was popular only with Journey fans in America. Even in rock n roll in late 70s and 80s, steve's voice failed to penetrate the mainstream rock. that's a fact! Perry was not that famous and only Journey fans knew him. Perry should say thank you to Arnel Pineda and Journey. when Perry was replaced by Augeri then Soto..still never heard Journey in Rock Festivals. I did not hear Perry because I am young and I am not an AOR 80s fan. I don't listen to radio in this category.

Arnel sounds good on this track. In reality he is an alto that is fast becoming a baritone. He is not a 'tenor voice' as Schon put it but he is really good when in his element.

@mikeknight4u He was in an accident not long after the release of Trial by Fire. His hip was broken. Anyone who has broken their hip knows that he'll never be able to walk right again. This would cause massive pain also in his lower back. His voice is as beautiful as it ever was. He can't tour because of the chronic pain, and he doesn't want to be a pain med junkie. So he retired from Journey. I don't know why Steve Smith retired from Journey.

But they will always have Ross Valory & Neal Schon, two of the worlds most underrated musicians. They are technical virtuosos and who cares who the singer is... nice songs but mostly background music... it's not like he was Robert Plant... it's throw away fun music... who cares who sings it....
Arnel doesn't have Steve's vocal range as far as octaves go, because Steve is a countertenor.
But even though Steve was quite the showman with his expressiveness with the way he sang i.e. running around the stage; Arnel wins hands down for honesty and really looking like he is enjoying himself and putting his heart n' soul into each song.
Maybe I am biased because chronologically(by 7-day week) Arnel is only four months younger than me and makes me feel like I grew up with the band.

For those who think they know the personnel matters of Journey, guess what? Its none of your business. Broken hips rarely heal 100%. He'll never walk the same again. Its a matter of how much pain he can endure for touring. That's his personal choice, and I can't say I blame him. Sure, he can sing for other recordings but when has he toured? He hasn't. @mikeknight4u He was in an accident not long after the release of Trial by Fire. His hip was broken. Anyone who has broken their hip knows that he'll never be able to walk right again. This would cause massive pain also in his lower back. His voice is as beautiful as it ever was. He can't tour because of the chronic pain, and he doesn't want to be a pain med junkie. So he retired from Journey. I don't know why Steve Smith retired from Journey.

Arnel doesn't have Steve's vocal range as far as octaves go, because Steve is a countertenor.
But even though Steve was quite the showman with his expressiveness with the way he sang i.e. running around the stage; Arnel wins hands down for honesty and really looking like he is enjoying himself and putting his heart n' soul into each song.
Maybe I am biased because chronologically(by 7-day week) Arnel is only four months younger than me and makes me feel like I grew up with the band.

In 1980s AOR only Journey song failed internationally, no hits and no awards. Boston, Kansas, Foreigner, Toto, Air Supply had hits and became a radio hits staple. Escape album was flopped and not charted in Top 40 outside the US. Too bad, GLEE and Arnel Pineda did the work for Steve Perry to make Don't Stop Believing became a hit.

I think the reason we still go Journey concerts is because of the love of the Journey we know with Steve Perry. Can anyone sing or remember any of the new songs or lyrics since Steve left? .
