Beautiful setting of Psalm 117--gorgeous phrasing, lovely dynamics, good diction--you can understand EVERY word--and it sounds like the harmonies split into five or more parts throughout the anthem. Praise the Lord for beautiful choral singing that highlights what trained voices can do!
I will support HBCU's till the end! Without them our musical history and traditions will be a thing of the past. Well done Dr Hayward!! NSU much respect. Your Brother Across the Pond HU 00"
LOL...do you see the focus in our eyes?!...LOL....and Jolee's face at the end lmbo...and my gracious, Sean was there...he was so wonderful...RIP Sean, we haven't forgotten you! :)
i'm in essence of joy at penn state and we're working on this song. it's pretty challenging, but you this choir seems to have done an amazing job with it. very nice...
These arguments are so trite. They are both great choirs in their own right. I am a grad. of NSU and work with Dr. Carl Haywood,Dr. Carl Harris and Dr. A Hailstroke. They are great directors. Let's put our petty egos aside and enjoy the music. Dr. James W. Wilcox, Jr. NSU ALUMN "93 "95
Well, in response to "dapor06" and "RNathiel Dett", I find that while both choirs are of HBCUs, they hae similar yet different focuses. Morgan, because of its history under Dr. Carter, focuses more on show-stopping with a full-bodied, more operatic sound. While Norfolk has the ability to do it, I find that they have more versatility to perform music from ALL musical periods, from Renaissance to 20th/21st century. From conversations with MSU member Colin Lett, MUS'd have much problems with that.
DAPro06 To be certain I do know my choirs from Howard, Hampton, Morehouse, Kentucky State, Fisk, Tuskegee, and more. Nathan though and eccentric was fantastic and did a lot for the image of all Black Choirs. But the Morgan Choir projected a gospel image for the most part and was not accepted by the choral community at large. It is what another reviewer referred to. I hope you can accept an opposing opinion or allow me to have one. They have gotten a little quiet since the death of Carter
Just to clear the air on a couple of things. this comments written here were actually written by one of brothers. He is Dre Simms and I, Patrick D, am the real dapro06. As a current member of the MSU Choir and Morgan Singers, I can honestly state that we are in no way, shape or form "quiet". We constantly touring performing where most can only dream of singing. More importantly our students are making names for themselves with roles in major opera companies and winning
well to whom ever wrote that comment about Morgan, you must not know your choirs well enough because MSU Choir on its worst day even after Dr. Carter will out sing NSU's choir but i still like them no shade i just want you to get your facts straight. Thanks my love.
TO U MR. DAPRO"06".................. ALL SHADE HUNNNI... BABY.... U BETTA ASK ABOUT NSU...... CARL HAYWOOD... IS THE BEST DIRECTOR IN THE TIDEWATER AREA... HE ALWAYS TELLZ HIS CHOIRS ABOUT THE GREAT ... LIKE MR. MOSES HOGAN... RIDER...Adolphus Hailstork.. AND FURTHERMORE HIMSELF.... U BETTA ASK ABOUT CARL HAYWOOD... AND... DOC IS IN HYMM BOOKS ...AN HAS ONE OF THE FINEST ARRANGMENTS OF THERE IS A BALM AND AMAZON GRACE,,, ASK ABOUT HIM,,, AND HIS CHOIR..
I would like to make it clear that dapro06, Patrick D (Myself), did not write the comment that comparing Morgan and Norfolk's Choirs but I did write the one that followed. My bro, Dre Simms wrote it using my screen name. Please do not take the opinion of my brother to be that of disliking Dr. Haywood. I, personally admire him and his directing methods. I sat in on a rehearsal and found his and the groups musicality to be impeccable.
What an uplifting song. Thanks.

Nice. But Shout For Joy will always be the greatest gift from Hailstork. Followed by "God of Glory Thunders" and "Break Forth".

My brother was in the MSU choir and he played NSU's first CD like it was going out of style.
Both suck if you ask me. Then again, I don't care for nothing but soulful singing
