Why are male singers singing in falsetto so frowned upon? It kind of pisses me off -- if it's there, you may as well use it! Odds are, these men's high notes would've sounded a lot more pleasing that way!
I actually prefer the high F, because it just FEELS harmonically complete. I can understand some not liking the sound (though I think Gedda does it so beautifully, and Matteuzzi as well), but the Db feels like a cliff-hanger, like the aria doesn't reach it's natural conclusion. But, like high Cs and Ds, if you have them, you have them - if not, you'll just have to do without.
Well, the one who gives me the feeling to be the most at ease is Matteuzzi. And artistically the best too, because he used probably the mixted voice fort he top notes, which is to me the best way to do it. As for the Aliberti, she's not afraid to be ridiculous in her version..!
Matteuzzi sings the F....I can NOT sing an F,grrrr... Still I believe i have quite good high notes. Am I right that the other tenors sing D flat ? I could sing that... I have quite strong D flat on youtube in the duett from Rigoletto. "karifrid, great high D flat,Rigoletto". I can do D,but hardly E flat....
I must confess...I know no Bellini aria "by heart". I have had a run through Meco all ´altar di venere. I sang Pour mon ame on around 13 concerts, but I think I am growing "to old" for that.
Hmmm ~~ Di Stefano and Pierre Duval [remember him?] did it much better than this crew, circa 1963; one with Callas and the other in the first Sutherland recording... Since this is one of those "The HIghest Note Wins" things, Mateuzzi's 2nd try at it has to be the one, since he's the only one to go for the original high F -- not D-flat like the others! ...and in much better voice than his first stab at it, which sounded awful and only [?] went to D-flat... Fun posting!
It was written for her at the end, when her voice was shot to h... Listen to the rather recent recording of that version to dispel any doubts about the quality... it stinks!
Bravo, coloraturafan! Fisichella is the worst major tenor on records - with the possible exception of Giuseppi Morino. Blake and Kunde are best here. IMHO.
I've heard Kraus in this role (good but a little spread at the top), but I'll never forget Saurez. He would mince across the stage, stop for the high notes, lean back and point his finger up. You had to be there. What a hoot!
IL PRIMO è IGNOBILE,KUNDE SA FARE UN FA DIVINO,PECCATO; IDEM SABATTINI CHE SAPREBBE SALIRE ANCHE DI PIU'; MITICO BLAKE; SOLITO ORRORE DI MERRITT, CORRETTO FLOREZ; LAHO AFONO; ENCINAS TORNA A STUDIARE...ORRRORE!!! Listening to this, was waiting for the real high notes. all but 1 altered the aria. It is a killer of an aria. however, there are many more tenors who sings it true to the printed page, and don't need to have the sop. sing the aria. which is wrong in every sense, even though it was beautifully sung. Mr Gedda, Mr. Brownlee, and a host of others. This clip should be named the Tenors with semi high notes.
Why is anyone praising Matteuzzi? He may go for the f but it's a horrible noise and his voice unnattractive and utterly lacking in the glamour that a Bellini singer needs.
@killer1177 It always has to be the mixed voice in all range. It is natural, that when a singer sings lower, there should be more of a chest, when sings higher, there should be more head. But it always has to be the mix. And there are high tenors that are equivalents to the high (coloraturas) sopranos. And if they have a really good technique, thay should be able to sing the high f in full voice.
Very interesting posting, thank you so much !! It´s a dreadful moment for every tenor in this part with lot´s of stress. I don´t think that´s essential to produce the interpolated high legendary notes- but : i´ve got so much respect for the art of Matteuzzi !!! He´s one of the less tenors which have got the style, the beauty and the technique of a true "tenore di grazia". He´s an enjoyment in this repertory, i admire him so much !! Thanks...
JDF, Fischella, and Matteuzzi worked best for me for a combo of legato and top notes. Liked the clip a lot but, of course, all of coloraturafan's compilations are excellent.
BRAVO Matteuzzi !! I've heard this sung by just about every belcanto singer since Kraus (also good not shown here) but I believe this is the best I've ever heard! BRAVO
Lucia Aliberti!! Oh my, utterly amazing!

Lawrence Brownlee hits the high F. Don't know whether it's chest voice or note, but it sounds good.
seektheforce 1 year ago
@seektheforce It's head voice, no male would be able to go that high purely chest voice. It would mostly have to be mixed or head I believe.
