From what I understand, the mighty Goguryeo destroyed Sui Dynasty, but the Tang Empire destroyed Goguryeo, however, Dae Jo-Young, son of Goguryean general Dae Jung-Sang, held off the Tang in today's NE China, and created the state of Balhae. Balhae was later subjugated by the Khitan Liao Dynasty.
People of Balhae, after the fall, migrated to Koryo =d the last crown price of Balhae, Dae Gwang-hyeon, lead the southward run. but yea, the Khitan subjugated them, Khitan's are Altaic like Balhae anyway =D Balhae was of the same race as Koryo, but it sucks.. lost a lot of land there!!
