Larry Lolonde is one of the most complex guitar players I have ever had the pleasure to listen to. Id even go so far as to say his originallity (in my opinion) far exceeds that of Claypools. Take a look at his riffs from songs like My name is mud, Jerry was a race car driver, American life, and Del Davis' tree farm. His originality is evident. The recipe for Primus - One part Les Claypool, and none other than Larry Lalonde. Take your pick from 1 of the 3 drummers and presto, Musical Geniuses
Don't misunderstand me, I really love metal and rock, but that's not totally Primus style. They go further. So you can't listen to Larry thinking he is going to play like malmsteen or buckethead or hendrix. They all have a different kind of expression. So please Thumb up my comments for all the people watching this video could know who Larry LaLonde really is and stop comparing. Larry plays great.
Well is difficult to UNDERSTAND Larry if you don't listen to Jazz, understand Jazz, and play Jazz and experimental guitar/music. After knowing that you must know Larry has a unique style. Larry is NOT a metal guitarist, He is not a rock guitarist neither. Larry is a MUSICIAN and he has too many influences, in his Music. And obviously for people who have just listened to metal, like the majority of Primus fans, this is difficult to swalow.
he's not the best gutarist ever. in fact, i don't think anyone knows who it is, but LaLonde is definitely one of the most proficient players i've heard.
Why can't all the music snobs appreciate all musicians for what they each offer? Do any of you think these guys (Les, Buckethead, etc.) give two shits about whether or not they're better than musician X, Y or Z?
Hint time: They don't. They're busy writing SONGS.
LMAO I love when somebody has to assert their opinion as fact. If you don't like the band... DON'T LISTEN TO 'EM!!! Band bashing just means you have no life, and are jealous of their success. You're entitled to your opinion, but don't force your opinion on everyone else like it's a proven fact. The only proven fact is there are 34 likes to 3 dislikes, so they must not be as shitty as you think they are!!!
@bucketheadfan1 It's called being a good, open-minded musician. It's funny cause even if you hate Primus and/or Possessed, you gotta admit that anyone who can go from being the backbone of the original death metal band to the backbone of one of the most style switching, avante-garde musical acts in history that is primus, has got to be an incredible musician all on his own. Not a lot of people can say they done that, did it happily, while still getting none of the bands credit, and be ok with it
Holy fucking shit, theyre both great musicians you fucktards. and the last time i checked, being a musician wasnt about who can can play better. its about expressing yourself and enjoying yourself plyaing, you play because you want to. not to best other people and starting retarted arguments on youtube.
Buckethead is just about speed and being fucking faster with boring scales, that's why a lot of people here likes buckethead more than ler, cuz people here don't know SHIT about what is the guitar about, is not about how fucking faster can you do one gay ass solo. Ler is groove, ambient, creativity, soul, spirit, and he is a WAY more BETTER songwriter and arrangement than shithead can hope to be in his life of autism
@psychopathtoine nice argumentative skills kid, buckethead sucks, a fact is a fact. Overrated and pretentious godly awful piece of shit. People think that they are badass because they are not into jonas brothers and justin biebers, there are so many overrated shits like Les Claypool, Mike Patton and Maynard, and all of them sucks (claypool is shit)
Ler completely deserves his due.....he has always pushed the envelope with what could be done with guitar and on stage he will blow your mind with how musically epic he can get.
i think hes a brilliant guitarist, but what i love even more is how primus's songs are mixed, it makes les's bass sound like the lead instrument and larry as a more background soloist
Really nice tribute, and it's sad how Larry doesn't get the respect he deserves as a kick ass guitarist, but hey, he doesn't really care for the popularity and money, he just plays it cause he loves it, wich makes him one of my ALL-TIME favourite guitar players ever.
larry is kick ass and soo is les and herb brain the second drummer is cool but to answer ur question larry is number two guitarist cuz in the vid sgt baker its before him and herb
Too bad buckethead is a hyped up douche. Sorry, fags. Just a bunch of regurgitated and over-dubbed Zack Wild and Yngwie Malmsteen guitar masturbation. His only style is a mask and KFC bucket. Wow..........
your both stupid. Buckethead AND ler are both amazing guitarists. COMPLETELY different styles. Buckethead is a PLAYER musician. Where as ler is a band musician. Stop fucking comparing musicians its not a fucking contest for whos best.
I love ler and buckethead both for what they bring to the table. Ler compliments les claypools bass style excellently and thats what makes it so great.
Ler is one of my favorite guitarists. His style is so unique and out of this world. But its not really the technicality of his solos that put me on the floor, its the finesse . The solo for mr knowitall is one of my favorites, as well as one of his easiest, but who the hell else would think of a solo like that? its so weird and ridiculous
Also, even though he didnt really write most of the ideas to his riffs, he added character to them. compare primus to frog brigade.
im not gonna agree with anyone on this one. i am a huge fan of larry lalonde and his playing skill is truley amazing. he did not write most of the guitar licks for primus however. and although he is a genious and severely underrated player, i dont know if we can say the same for his ability to write songs
also another reason he's underrated is cause his works are so far from the norm that people would rather critisize his works than pay attention and realize how much talent it takes
Everyone focuses so much on Les and the drumming that Ler's genius is overlooked. Just listen to what that guy is doing, it's so amazing and groundbreaking, It's a shame he doesn't get more credit for making Primus what they are.
Alot of people forget (or fail to mention) that he was taught by Satriani... that explains the PRS madness. love his tones. his moves. i think i'm gay for you larry.
Larry goes nuts in Wynonas big brown beaver, Tommy the cat, and Jerry the race car driver. If u isten 2 those tracks u can tell from that he knows his crap. U can even try anything from brown album or Tales from the punch blowl.
I think thats the wrong way to look at it. It's not about technique I mean I know guys who can play it. Its not that hard. BUT if you ask someone to CREATE a solo like larry plays them THAT is where it gets hard. I mean he doesn't use the normal ways of soloing like pentatonic or any diatonic scales. he uses tritones and stuff and it sounds unique. thats the art of music, not the technique.
You are arguing creativity vs. technical skill. I believe we can both agree that Ler has a plethora of creativity, especially when we can describe some of his work as bad acid trips.
I was merely suggesting that his creativity is also reinforced with the technical skill he can apply to 6 strings. Wynona BBB is a good example of that. Tommy the Cat is another
Yeah Tommy the cat is really cool! I especially love the live version Of Wynona's in which they perform in Penguin costumes... You can hear the guitar very clear in this video.
I am a friend of larry's and he looks so funny in these pics. my dad knows larry really well so he comes over a lot and his stept son is my friend and his brown guitar in some of those pics i got to hold 3 days ago so HA

@HellolzEveryone Well that depends. I meant his newer bands ,not quite Primus.
His current groups *Holy Mackerel, Flying Frog Brigade* are kind of rare to hear about.
Les himself though did stuff with bass player magazine, CNN,
