I love prefab sprout and Paddy Macloon is genius - but i quite like this version.

Love prefab sprout but I found that Paddy's demo of this song sounds a little bare, and actually I do prefer this version. Plus Frances Ruffelle looks a little bit like Lolly (another Geordie), which is a good thing.

The meaning and feeling just completely seem to have vanished in this awful cover. The music has just been slap dash thrown together. Glad I didn't hear this version first

This is just awful. Please listen to the original, written and sung by Paddy MacAloon. They ruined his masterpiece.

Yeah - Paddy wrote it and originally recorded it in '92 but it was rejected by his label... Frances's version was the first one released.

I like both. The quality of the song itself shines through.

It's Paddy McAloon's tune. You can hear his version of his own song on the "lost" album from 93' he's just released.

Nice. But not even close to the McAloon/Sprout version in beauty and complexity and subtle inflections.

Just different - Paddy's is much more "lush" in terms of production and instrumentation. Both are great. :)

@gazzo45 Its my favourite song from Earth the story so far.... along with Earth the story so far, lovely too.. Really don't like this version at all, its lacking all the loveliness of his own. I love the picture with himself and daughter too.

Paddy MacAloon wrote this brilliant tune and this is even better than the version he sings on the just released Prefab Sprout album.

You know, I love PM & PS, and I agree with you. The Paddy version may have been better with a proper band and TD producing IMO.
