Is there anyone out there that could tell me where I might find the Act "Ragamuffin Doll"?I have search every where I can think of. I sure would appreciate the information.
...and, sadly, the Bert Williams puppet was eliminated because MGM didn't want to offend their Southern exhibitors by showing him in the montage [just as Lena Horne's musical number was almost always snipped out of prints that were shown in the South].
This was two years in the making- and a LOT of changes were made between the original idea and the final release version; for instance, MGM eventually felt that a stop-motion "Leo the Lion" wasn't appropriate enough to introduce the film, and decided that no one less than William Powell as "Flo Ziegfeld" himself, should "set the scene"...
WOW!!! Thanks for posting this. I've seen this film many times.... This is interesting, but I think they made the right decision to re-shoot the opening with William Powell.
I wonder who does"Leo The Talking MGM Lion's"voice?

Yep there's a reason why William Powell was a star and Leo was played by a real lion.

I've seen a (different) "Leo the Lion" puppet on an MGM Parade episode. He introduced the short "Screwball Squirrel".

My goodness, some of those puppets were terrifying!! The choice they made for the final cut was a good one. Thank you for sharing! :)

Thanks for this. Thank heavens they replaced Leo with Mr. Powell, reprising his role as Ziggy.
