The breeder cut the ears. A procedure done to breeds like Great Danes, Boxers, etc, which some argue helps to keep the ear clean and prevents infections - like people who circumcise children for hygienic reasons. Tail docking is a far more painful process as many young puppies are not even given a local for the "cut". Then there's also the issue of spaying/neutering. My dog is intact. I bet if I asked him whether he prefers ear snipping vs the removal of his testicles, he'd pass on the latter.
