  • Seen a lot of tutorials. This, by far, has got to be the most practical of all learnings! I wish I knew of this years ago. What a jewel!

  • this man is a genius!

Take that beethoveen, Mozart and all classical musicians that studied music like it was science!

  • This is a brilliant system for use with fake sheets.

  • JG: This was a great series! Thanks so much for your time, energy and GIFT. Your aside comments crack me up and make the learning fun!

    Stay blessed!

  • How to find the flash cards?

  • How do you find the 14 page report?

  • hi J, im lovin it, but could you start like at the veryyyyyyy beginning maybe in another form of utube for someone like me who needs to start with " this is middle c"...lol

i want to start with the beginnin of piano with you...maybe on the side, anything, i really like your vibe but i need beginners lesson, i do have a keyboard too....

  • This Video to long couldt go throw the whole thing

    so much talking

  • Yeah, I grover2g has the same questions I'm trying to get answers for. I know after figuring out the key of the song I want to play by ear. And then I figure out the melody in that key for my right hand. But now how do I know what chords to play on my left hands to accompany the right hand melody. Or do you play break up a chord and play like 1,3 on your left hand, and 5 on your right. Sorry I'm confusing. But I'm trying to understand how to blend the chord with the melody

  • ** Part 2

    2. When do you want to use certain chords? I know from your classes that each tone of a scale is associated with a chord type. But what about the added chords... C7, C9, C11, flatted and sharped 5ths and so on... Do you have any hints for using these?

  • **Jermaine,

This video is awesome. I have memorized all of the major, minor, augmented and diminished chords as you suggest. However, now I need the next step.

    1. I see how all chords can be built by combining 3 tone chords. However, in many cases the chords can be simplified or condensed by leaving certain tones out. How do I know which ones to leave out? How do you decide which inversions to use? Simply put, how do you adjust these chords for playing?

  • Hey man you are superb at teaching. You don't scare people away with difficult technical tricks. Tell great stories, and brass tax musical business. Tons of respect for all your vids.

  • hey its me again germaine just wondering if you saw my previous comments about an ear training course, what i woould like to learn is how to get any chord out by ear, if there is a sort of pattern my ear can recognize and know wat chord it is?

  • i recommend a program called PITCH or chords101 / chords 102. Very helpful.

  • Chords are made from various combination of 3 and 4 semitones.

    Major = 4:3 - Minor = 3:4

    Dim= shrink = 3:3 Aug =Expand=4:4

From the above formulas any chords can be formed - how do you reconcile b/w the above and your method? What are the advantages of using your memorising method, other than being able to execute the chord quickly?

  • Don't worry adollar4u, I covered all that too. I talked about major thirds plus minor thirds (and the inverse of the two if you want to create a minor chord). I talked about 4 half steps vs 3 half steps. I talked about intervals. I talked about tertian chords. THe point is PLAYING and not getting stuck in analysis paralysis. I've hammered this point in all 3 videos. Thanks :-)

  • I cannot thank you enough - thank you again much appreciated

  • Ok! Im not gonna say anythng much. That one was Awesome bro.

I had posted a comment before i watched it yesterday, but after watching it I thought "MIND BLOWING". I hope that we will not only get from you but that one day we may be able to give back to you what God has graciously given us also. Even as we continually pray for the grace of our Lord and Saviour Christ Jesus to be with u in Blessing the people.

  • You are a gift from God. That shows by your continued sharing your knowledge trying in every way to make it simple and in the grasp of every level of muscian trying to learn. I so appreciate you as a fine young man with an extraodinary gift to teach. Thank you. Debra Ann Petitan--Chicago

  • Jearmine man u rock!!! thank u so much for this videos they've helped me a lot with my knowledge!!! im not really a piano player, i mean i know how to play a little but im more of a guitar player but still theyre awesome!ok but theres one thing i really want to ask you, you see i dont really play by ear cuz i just havent been able to develop it correctly in fact is really lame but i know some theory and i love music so can u like post some lesson to help people like me?

  • Thank You I wish you played Guitar. I do know how to use a bar cord to play major or minor cords in and key on the guitar. But dim and Aug cords I dont know about

But your lessons are clear and easy to follow

  • Jermaine,

The last three videos have advanced my music knowledge by lightyears. I have been playing by ear for years and never really understood the fundamentals. I now have fresh new building blocks that will shorten my learning curve on anything new that I attempt to learn. Thank you for your help!

    Jazzyd

  • Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. My question is, can your theories be applied to other instruments, like guitar?

  • Yes, absolutely! Chords are the same, regardless of whether you're on piano or guitar. Of course, you'll have to relate it to the guitar but outside of that, you can benefit from EVERYTHING said here. Take care, JG

  • hi jermaine,

  • Jermaine,

Sorry for spelling your name wrong in an earlier reaction, won't happen again.

I followed your Flash cards tip.

I looked a little strange in the beginning.

But guess what: Its a great playing tool on recognising chords and their relations.

    Thanks for this!

  • Another great video, Jermaine. You have a wonderfully personable teaching style and tools that makes this theory work really approachable and practical.

(Your computer video skills are thoroughly impressive as well.)

Do you have suggestions for the mechanical side of things? How can I train these 61 year old, beginning student muscles and mind to produce patterns? What do you suggest to go beyond practicing scales? Thank you!

  • this video is addicting, especially for ppl who really want to learn more....

  • Really good info

  • Mr. Jermaine Griggs, we the little people out here appreciate what you are doing for us. I've purchased learning dvd's my entire life, and guess what, they were boring and never held my attention. I am focused now, and I am feeling your method of teaching. I know I speak for tons of us out here when I say styles make fights. Your style of teaching is made for your future contenders methods of learning. Continue the good work and I will spread the word about your method of teaching.

  • man, you are such a nice guy. i really appreciate that you share your knowledge with us.

i had to laugh when you said: "oh man, this thing isn't even on (periodic table)". hahaha, that was

    so "live" :)

  • Hi Jermaine, thank you for the awesome video :) Subscribe people to get them first! I recommend tit!

  • Hi Germaine,

Thanks for this great video and explanation especially about building 7, 9 and 11 chords.

Finally I understand how to make these chords on my keyboard and their relations.

Tip: keep your story a little shorter, e.g. the Ford story is really long man!

Keep on these great videos, wish your course would be available also online!

    Thanks

  • haha, my wife said the same thing about the Ford story. I guess I shouldn't get carried away next time :-)

  • Great video. Finally i started to appreciating playing music!

  • Hi jermaine god bless i've learnt so much from you. i actually bought some of you dvds and is currently practising.may god be with you always.

  • One of the great things about learning piano is we don't just learn the skill of playing piano, but we really develop our ability to teach ourselves new concepts faster.

This video really speaks to that!

great assembly line analogy :) for teaching strategy Jermaine.

  • Wow! I only planned on watching about 5 minutes of this before going to bed, but I stayed up and watched the whole thing! Great stuff, Jermaine. You could have a 5 year old playing like a pro with your teaching skills.
