Yeah yeah I've heard much better from her prior to and after this date- I believe La Verrett must have simply went through the entire process of menopause during this production. But she quickly adjusted. A big brrrrava her for keeping her s**t together when things got hot!
You know it is just an " OFF NIGHT ". We must be human. Singers sometimes are not really ill but not in the best health, that causes fear and tension and that makes singing difficult. that is what I guessed that happened with Verrett. A pity that a video inmortalized just a weak moment in a glorious career.
she is not doing terribly... she does have her moments in both the good and bad spots but she doesn't make me want to rip off my ears or anything...I still continue to dislike the foot thing...in any production...
Nada impede que Verret interprete uma excelente Carmen. Sua presença no palco até a favorece para isso. No entando esta Carmen deveria ser apagada, para não registrar momento tão ruim na carreira de tão excelente intérprete.
It was with Jon Vickers not Domingo. I believe at the time of this production, Verrett had retired Carmen from her repretoire. She felt it was too thankless of a role plus she had sung it so so so many times in her career
Here I find that Verrett is not really in ideal shape, just coming out from a serie of Macbeth in Paris. The costume is terrible, she seems to be disturbed to breath, and by the staging...She had said after those performances that she would never wish to sing again a Carmen because of being bored of the producers and their way to put Carmen behind Don José, in a week position. What a pity that earlier performances were not captured(like in Covent Garden in 1973).
She should've cancelled! This is HORRIBLE. It's sad to hear such a great singer (and she really was great!) murdering a role for whatever reason. I think her ACTUAL reason for not singing it again was that she saw and heard this recording!!! Poor Shirley- her poor voice sounds exhausted.
She looks great but we have much better clips of her Carmen.
Anyway she's still quite special.

Verrett made her Met debut with Domingo in Carmen nearly 20 years before this...

My teacher always told me, when you're singing don't conduct with your foot!

What a pity that "Carmen" from Paris 1980 (Berganza/Domingo) was not edited officially on DVD!

Carmen is kinda mediocre at times, but this is still cool, Domingo is so great!
