my advice would be: if it is really about beleiving him, tell him you would like to talk to his ex-girlfriend about the situation. If he doesn't want that, you know that there is something going on - whatever it may be - and that he is not straight about it to you, and maybe not staight about you with his ex-girlfriend. If he agrees, you might see the situation clearer if you actually talk to her! (I am really interested in him, but I'm a bit concerned because you 2 are still living together...)
