  • I had the honor to play against John Brockington before he was in college. We went to rival high schools in Brooklyn in the mid-60s.

He was the terror of high school football teams in NYC's PSAL Division II (Brooklyn). Even in 1965, we knew he would go far.

Jefferson High School won the Division title that year, mostly because of him and a little halfback named Jesse Cleare. Brockington would run over you inside, Cleare would run past you outside...

  • Those might as well be labeled all the rushing highlights for the Packer franchise from 1971 to about.....1993 maybe.

  • Anyone remember the mask Clint Jones once wore with the Vikings? Thing was right up against his face.

  • When you run that hard, you usually don't last that long in the league. As far as Jack Tatum goes, they faced each other once to my knowledge while JB was in Green Bay.1972 season, that was the game where Tatum had his record-setting 104yd. fumble return that wasn't a fumble, should have been ruled a muff.Oakland won,20-14,that being the difference.Number one memory of John was 1973 Pro Bowl, when he flat ran over Mean Joe Greene for a score.Unbelievable.That was back when they actually played to win.

  • @59ogre I would have liked to see that!

  • Now this was FOOTBALL--Black and Blue Division football!

And I also like those old helmets.

  • Mr. Brockington goes to my church

  • Recently I bought an Alan Page replica helmet, complete with his old Dungard lineman style mask, autographed by Page, Marshall, Eller and Larsen. It's my favorite helmet. I also love the helmets/masks of the sixties/seventies. They just looked better, I don't know why exactly. I started my collection humbly by buying a plain white TK with a 64 NJOP mask and adding my own set of 60s Chargers bolt decals and "86" Faison decals...lol. Then I bought a Bobby Bell Chiefs helmet.

  • @2010Drine

I also bought a white RK 2 with the Jack Pardee OPO...are you familiar with that one?? Very rare mask in that the middle bar was placed lower than other OPO's. Also have a Vikings helmet with one bar. Back then the players could get away with that since the takles were more like running wrestling. I sometimes wonder if the old helmets were brought back, there would'nt be the illegal hitting problems. They know they'd kill themselvers if they led with the head. Problem solved!!

  • @6400az according to Joe Pa, that's an excellent idea!

  • @Roggiedodgie

Actually he took it one step further, he wanted helmets without facemasks altogether.. I think that may be stretching it a bit though...

  • @6400az you're right- ha ha ha!

  • Another phenomenal player of the early 70's almost completely forgotten!! When I see him running, the thing that comes to mind is pure unadulterated violence. Knees, elbows, fist pumping.Man would he do a number on my Vikings....Paul Krause....lord help him....

Starting @ about 2:00, I'd love to see Jack Tatum get in front of that runaway train. Both men staring at each other eye to eye, and ready to unload.

  • @6400az Yeah, I'd kindof like to have seen Tatum get run over too, come to think of it. ;) I like the part at about 2:40 where JB carries about nine Bears with him down the field. JB was the epitome of what Black and Blue Division football was all about. He was the first back in NFL history to rush for 1000 yards in his first three NFL seasons, and came close in his 4th, before injuries took their toll. As a side note, I love the old Dungard mask--looks so sinister.

  • @2010Drine

Yep, he carries a bunch of Bears there where you say.

He also did a number on my Vikings as this video shows.

He had those great years, then he just seemed to fall of the map.

I don't reacall him being anywhere near as effective once he was traded to the chiefs. That dungard mask is a classic. I have a small collection of old style football helmets and

love the equiptment used back then. I, in fact purchased one mask just like it

  • @2010Drine jack tatum 'never' got run over. stop hatin'.

  • @92463mike

No hatin here. It's just a a fact of life when you play in the NFL your gonna get run over from time to time. It happened to Tatum as well and on several occasions. Check out the 1973 AFC Championship game, tell me what you see Csonka do to him. If that's not good eneugh, there' the 1977 MNF game when the Rams Wendel Tyler just bowled him over. Both games are available in full broadcast, you don't have to take my word for it.

  • @6400az And what 'you' did not see in each case was Tatum paying both Csonka and Tyler back. Jack Tatum was the hardest-hitting strong safety ever, ask Earl Campbell. He knocked big Earl out in 1979, and I love Earl. Yes, you do get run over once in a while, but best believe Jack 'the assasin' Tatum did more knocking out than anyone!

  • @92463mike

So then Tatum WAS, in fact, runneth over.

When you consider what Csonka and Tyler did , I'd say Tatum still owes them considarably more.

  • @92463mike Jack Tatum hurled his body at people like a torpedo. He was one of the hardest hitters of all time, but he wasn't a classic "wrap-up" tackler. Once in a while he took a wrong angle and bounced off someone or didn't have enough momentum on his side. Remembers force equals mass times acceleration. When he wasn't accelerating, he did get run over from time to time. Not a good idea to say "never" about things you don't really know.

  • @6400az

That's why i didn't think Paul Krause deserved to be in the hall of fame. A centerfield safety who just sat back 15 yards and wasn't physical at all.

  • @shire2005 Paul Krause had over 80 career INTs......he is a HOFer

  • @shire2005 LOL
