  • My father was a WW 2/Pearl Harbor survivor who served aboard the U.S.S. Maryland battleship. He was there on the day of the attack. He passed away on my 53rd birthday in 2004. This hymn was played as a part of his funeral service. I tear up every time I hear it. Thanks for posting this beautiful version of the "Navy Hymn".

  • Beautiful tribute. Beautiful hymn. Thank you for posting. USMC (retired)

  • For the USN and all who served .

For my father who retired as a Lt Commander...the sea never left him...and now , after these many years I somehow see him on the Ocean...the wide deep blue sea

  • This version was used in the film "Crimson Tide". I think the lyrics were deliberately obscured to let the magnificent melody speak for itself.

  • @pvtpstr right, and the obscured version sounds better to my ears.

  • Hey Dragonusn- great tribute! My grandfather served aboard the USS Silversides in WW2 while in the Navy reserves and a day doesn't go by that I don't brag about his service.

  • What choir is this? Why do they sing only the first and second verse?

  • @irishmatey Because there are hundreds of versus to this song. There is pretty much a verse for every job in the Navy and Marine Corps.

  • I first heard this hymn during President Kennedy's Funeral...today is the 47th Anniversary of that horrible day. God bless America always.

  • I have stood on a sub pier and watched my husband and friends leave not knowing what was going to happen. This hymn was my of giving them God speed as they left port.

  • I have stood on a sub pier and watched my husband and friends leave not knowing what was going to happen. This hymn was my of giving them God speed.

  • Tremendous respect to these men and women of the Navy who have signed a blank check made payable to the United States of America for amounts up to and including their lives.

Read "The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors" if you want a good sense of what the American Navy can do facing overwhelming enemy force.

  • I'm from an old Royal Navy family. My dad was a war hero, & survived with a very few men the sinking of his ship en route to Murmansk in WW2. He loved the US Navy, & went to the Antarctic with your Vice Admiral Evelyn Byrd before the war. He also loved the music! Please see my video.

  • Wasn't this the Official Song of the U.S. Navy at one time? Before Anchors Aweigh?

  • Beautiful....my daughter is serving now on board the USS Abraham Lincoln...thanks for this wonderful video.

  • USN!!!!

  • IMO, The US Navy wins the most beautiful hymn.

  • my grandpa faught in the navy. this is making me cry. I LOVE YOU GRANDPA!!!!!!

  • @stellatois

    Here you are:

    O Savior whose almighty word

The winds and waves submissive heard

Who walk-est on the foaming deep

And calm amist it's rage did sleep

O hear us when we cry to thee

For those in peril on the sea.

There are more stanzas and you can see them and the sheet music on Wiki.

God Bless you and your family during this difficult time, and God Bless your father. He's one of the guys I made this for and I hope it does him credit.

  • To all the people who disliked this video, I will gladly offer a friendly kick in the nuts.

  • Thank you so much for this wonderful posting. My brother served in the U.S. Coast Guard during WWII; I, also, had two uncles and a cousin who served. This piece of

    music is incredibly moving.

  • Go Navy, and the USS Severn, the fresh water tanker of Okinawa, five battle stars, and survivor of five kamikazes of that battle! EW Hicks, my grandfather was there! He told me of the eyes of those Japs trying to hit his ship, as they missed!

  • @Lovetogolf2005 my grandfather was there too

  • A great version.

  • This Navy sub vet thanks you!! Outstanding.

  • This Navy submarine vet thanks you!! Great job.

  • very cool video!! thank you! makes me proud to be a sailor in the worlds greatest navy!!

  • Thank you to all who have served and are serving now to keep us Free....

  • I thank all that have served to keep us safe and free and to all those who have given their lives to keep me free. God Bless all of the veterans that are serving now and all those who have served ever. Including my dad, and my wonderful Sea Bee husband who served his country for years I honor you all.

  • Very nice. thank you

  • outstanding

  • @TheJessiJigsaw My father was on TOLEDO during Korea also.

  • This is called the Mariner's hymn in Britain. It was written by the English clergyman William Whiting in 1860 and has since become a core part of that great seafaring community that spans the english speaking world. From the United States to the United Kingdom, all the way to Australia and New Zealand, great respect to all those who have died on the sea to feed, clothe and protect civilisation.

  • cool

  • by far the best recording of the naval hymn, god bless and keep all those men, women, sailors and marines who keep our shores safe.

  • This has always been my favourite hymn. My father was in the Navy during WWII and Korea, so I guess it isn't surprising that I've known it by heart since before I can remember. Even so, it never ceases to move me deaply. It also reminds me of how greatful I am that there are so many good men and women out there who have been, are, and will be willing to serve this beautiful, magnificent country of ours. My heart and thanks go out to all of you.

  • This is Britains song. But we will let you play it as well :)

  • true. i'm in the US Naval Academy and this will be played at my funeral.

  • For The Crew of the DD-459 USS Laffey

    Friday November 13th 1942 ...........Amen

  • Amen!

    IS3 Moore, NAS Follon

  • My grandfather served in the Navy during WWII. Nice job on this tribute to our Navy and there is no such thing as an Ex or former Marine. Anchors Aweigh and Semper Fidelis

  • EXCERPT

"Almighty God; We make our earnest prayer that Thou wilt keep the United States in Thy holy protection; that Thou wilt incline the hearts of the citizens to cultivate a spirit of subordination and obedience to government; and entertain a brotherly affection and love for one another and for their fellow citizens of the United States at large. Grant our supplication, we beseech Thee, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen."

    G. Washington

    A Proud US Navy Veteran!

    *****

  • im heading to boot camp in may, but for the USMC tho

  • nice, youd be suprised with how much the Corps and the Navy work together.

  • Do you know where I might find a copy of the audio (only) of this version of the Navy Hymn ?

    Thank You .....

  • This is my favourite hymn - my father was in the Navy, and I think of him everytime I hear this lovely hymn. Love to all - Ken

  • Everytime I hear this version, I get chills that are sparked from patriotism. I've never served but wish dearly I had. Only those that have ever served or those that have a true place in their hearts for our armed services, those who serve, and the man above, will ever really appreciate this hymn.

  • Dragonusn - thank you. Thank you for noticing those heros before us. we should all be more greatfull

    Retired Navy - 27 years

  • I agree, ingramlove. Thanks for your service. My dad's retired Navy as well (20 years). I plan on joining, too. :)

  • When he wrote this tales of tragedy were all too common, ships sunk and hundreds of lives were claimed all the time. Since then the death of brave sailors and innocent passengers either taken into the icy depths or dashed against rocks has been reduced severely, but it is still far far too common. Whenever i can i give money to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution in the knowledge that it is going to a good cause. I salute all those who died on the sea and all those still on. May god be kind

  • The greatest hymn in the world. Written by the English clergyman William Whitelaw in the 1800s. He would travel to America in later life, a sea trip of thousands of miles and unpredictable weather, i bet he hummed this all the way. In the US this is the Navy Hymn, in the UK the Mariners Hymn- it means so much to both nations. Every year on Remembrance sunday we sing this at my Parish church in remembrance of all those who died on the sea to feed and protect us in wars past.

  • It was William Whiting actually! All the other facts are correct though

  • Thanks for including the quick shot of the LCAC...go Gator Navy!

  • Hans Zimmer rearranged the hymn in two versions for the soundtrack of Crimson Tide . This is the choral version ("Little Duck") from the CD. The other one is the last part of track "Roll Tide". (downloadable from YouTube as "Pearl Harbor-Navy 101")

It's the most moving version what I ever heard...

Zimmer used fine mixes of natrural human voice with strings and brass, and very soft and warm "digital essences" in the background. The movie won the Grammy for "best soundtrack of the year" in 1996.

  • an amazing hymn im proud to be enlisted

  • There are no words in any language to express my feelings about this hymn or my feelings towards those who serve. Having served myself, I understand the sacrifice our sailors and Marines are put through, often unsung and begrudginly accounted. You have my unending thanks and respect. I am still awestruck to see these brave souls in harms way to preserve our freedom, and can only imagine this tribute to be a small and humble recognition to the debt owed them. God bless our services!

  • There is something very powerful that hits the soul when you see our young men laying down their lives for there country. It takes a special man to be willing to do that. God bless you all!!

  • I truly love the Navy. But one day, I do hope to become one of the greatest warriors in history, a Marine! Semper Fi!

  • I hope to become a Navy pilot.

  • What a moving hymn. The first time I ever heard it was watching JFK's funeral, and I've never forgotten it. My father was a Naval officer in World War II, and he in later years always spoke with such great pride of that experience. My military time was with Special Forces in the mid-sixties, which also was an experience in which I take great pride.

  • I'm only seventeen and from the UK, but I have a lot of respect for the navy and marine corp.

I wish I had the guts to serve, but I don't. I don't want to leave behind family and friends, which is what has given me some of the respect I hold for the navy. I know a lot of Naval Officers have family and friends waiting at home for them, and, sadly, some dont make it home. It's a sad thing, to think this, however, the navy are preparing everyone for a better future. God Bless.

  • This video brings back alot of good memories from my time in the navy.

  • Thank you for posted this beautiful Tribute from the US NAVY to all Service Men and Woman of our Glorius Nation. GOD BLESS AMERICA!

  • Beautiful job. Stirring and Very much appreciated...and I was Air Force!

  • England U.S.A France Spain FTW!!!!!!!!!!!

Coming from a English kid wanting to serve U.S.A =)

  • I just want to say that I don't even know you and I have a lot of respect for you. It takes guts to serve for your country, and even more guts to serve for another. You will go far.

Dress Whites and Gold wings eh? ;)

  • As a CHIEF select, I never knew how beautiful this song was until now. Thank you. I shall remember it always and forever.

  • That was beautiful. I am a Navy veteran and have a friend that just joined the Navy. I am going to pass him this. That song has held important meaning to me since I joined. Thank you for posting that. Absolutely gorgous!!!

    PO2 Christine Mullen

  • Very nice. My father served in the Navy from 1942 to 1945, and then reserve after that. Three years on a tin can in the North Atlantic. "The Nazis used to hunt us," he told a local newspaper on leave at that time. "Now we hunt them."

  • Thank you for this. Mkaes me even more proud to have served in the Navy for 20 years

  • You just need to add a barrage of 16" battleship shots and it would be perfect. God Bless

  • To the men and women at sea, serving this country. May God be with thee, calm the seas and keep thee.

  • For all who are serving and all who have served, may there be Fair Winds and Following Seas and faith in the Eternal Father, Always Strong to Save. Blue and gold forever.

  • For popcorn8811; It is an assault hovercraft uses to deliver Marine assault personnel to the beaches and beyond.

  • Thank you so much for sharing this video, it's with great pride, that I hold as my Dad served over 20 yrs in the Navy. (brother joined the Corps)

Thanks to all who have served, and are active now.

As for my Dad, we lost him in 1992. He was laid to rest in Arlington National (CPO Durkin)

  • This song always tears me up. Thinking about my Grandfather as a UDT. And always gets me thinking about my love of the Sea

  • I used this for the Funeral scene in the HBO movie Taking Chance. if you all did not see it ,especially if you're a Marine Please do

  • whats that at? 49-51 secs

  • Amphibious vehicle of some kind=P cant remember what the name of it was^^,

  • LCAC, Landing Craft Air Cushion

  • ok=) now i know^^, thnx =)

  • I've said this before, and I'll say it again - GO NAVY!

  • Serving 24 years in the U.S. Navy, 17 of them at sea, We are under-estimated in what we can do and accomplish being at sea. We are the first to head where trouble arises, and usually the last to leave. Thank you for your posting.

  • My father was a WWII Naval Aviator and two of my mother's brothers were Marines - one combat pilot and the other landed on Pacific beaches. She wanted to join as a nurse but they would not let her - forcibly. I was an Army Infantryman. My father always told me that the SeaBees were the best - they got their before anybody else and fought with their hands and construction equipment. My father LOVED the Navy Hymn. He had it played at his funeral. Now I've some idea why. Thank you very much.

  • Thank you. Putting childhood aside, I have spent more than 1/2 of my life devoted to the sea. USN Ret. Soon death will overcome me (Cancer) and I will return one last time to the sea. Thank you again, I have long awaited The Navy Hymn to bring me some peace and, admittedly, a tear or two.

  • thank you for serving sir. im an abh airman serving on the lha-5 and things like this makes me proud to serve the united states. Im an mexican born american and i never had the respect i have now since i became a sailor and im grateful i was given the opportunity to serve. hooyah!

  • I did a deployment on the LIU back in 2001. I miss that ship. She was wonderful

  • God bless you and your family. It is because of the tremendous sacrifice and dedication of people such as yourself that we enjoy the freedoms we do. You are a patriot and an American in it's fullest form. I thank you for your decision to help protect us. You may not think of yourself as a hero, but you are to so many.

  • God bless you.

  • Seabees 1962-1965, Go Navy!

  • Thank you.

  • I just lost an Uncle who was at Pearl Harbor and Korea, may he rest in peace. I have been asked as a family member to sing this song accapella during the ceremony, pray that God gives me strength.............HE WAS A GREAT NAVAL OFFICER AND REGARDED HIGHLY...............GINA

  • To the Men and women of the USN, God Speed..

  • I am Mexican with a deep love tu the United States of America...God Bless America, Marines, NAVY and S.E.A.L.S God bless them all.

  • both my parents were in the navy, it becomes a part of who you are, i'm acually going coast guard though, despite the looks my parents gave me and the 'navy talks' i've been getting since!

  • What makes you say that? I thought most of U.S. naval traditions and customs came from the Royal Navy anyway.

  • Im british and I love the US Armed forces, and the US itself. I think we should be the next US State myself...but i cant see it happening, fuck europe! :)

  • Fitting Tribute to the United States Naval Forces: USN, USMC, USCG. God rest the souls of our fallen servicemen and uphold the honor of their sacrifice always.

AZ2 US Fleet Activities - Yokazuka

  • What a beautiful tribute to our wonderful US Navy!!!

  • Amen to all the praising comments on this video...the way this sounds is resonant and haunting, very somlumn and moving, just as it should be!! Gives me goose bumps and sends shivers down my spine. God bess America and all who defend her, past, present, and future!!

  • i played this in band

  • Thanks for posting this beautiful music.

  • I pray for our service men and women world wide in this crisis we face , May god watch over them all and keep them safe .

  • The US Navy owes many a fine tradition to our bretheran in the Royal Navy. The hymn is from another time, and neither too British, or American. It was written as a prayer. If these two fine sea services were to have but one thing define them as Sailors, this hymn would be it.

    Go Navy

  • i love being in the navy hoorah

  • this is beautiful. God bless all of our soldiers, airmen, sailors, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen.

  • Beautiful. This hymn is not only relevant to both American and British Navies. IMO, its very much a prayer for every person facing paril.

  • I served on HMAS Brisbane DDG41, and I loved this clip.

  • keep all our sailors safe which ever nationality they may be. The sea can be dangerous if not respected

  • I'm a son of the USN. My dad was stationed on the USS Rodgers DDE876, and later the USS Kirk DD1087 during the last 6 yrs of 'Nam. I didn't meet him until I was 6 months old. My whole life's been filled with total Respect and Awe for ALL our services, but especially for the Navy! Remember our men & women on land and Sea and those serving below. They are the reason that our Great Nation has endured all these many years. God Bless the U.S. Navy and her fellow branches, and GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!! :)

  • Amen to that. I'm a son of the USAF myself.

  • Even from a liberal peacenik nutjob like myself; Thank You US Servicemen and women. Non Sibi Sed Patriae! Go Navy!

  • Our navy doesn't seem to get the respect they deserve lately!..as a Marine we always banter back and forth,..but deep down we love and would do anything for the other branch...Semper Fi my navy brethren.

  • I myself currently Serve is the US Navy.. and everytime I hear this song it feels me with pride and nearly brings me to tears... knowing just how many outstanding men and women have given the ultamite sacrifice. All I ask is that you give credit to the Sacrifices, on all levels, made by the Men and women of the US Navy, and the Military as a whole. When you see a Veteran or current service member, shake their hand and thank them. It really means alot to them. Trust me.

    SN Phariss

  • From a sailor to another thank you for your continuing service in the greatest Navy in the world

  • thank you for all you have done for this great country people like you who have served or are serving in the Navy are my inspiration for when i join the Navy in a year so once more thank you and let me say it is an honor to have brave men like you fight for us

  • My eternal thanks to you Dragon ~

Possible Japanese Mine between Midway Island and Japan.

I just posted the photo I have of him to the On Eternal Watch site. He is my hero.

    Thank you again.

  • May God bless you, Dragon, for your service and sacrifices......without you, and all our Veterans, we wouldn`t be enjoying what we now have. You have my eternal thanks.

  • I think that "Victory at Sea" should be the official tune and song of the navy instead of Anchor's Aweigh or the Navy Hymn.

  • I did not see my last try at a comment go thru so here i am trying again. I am a veteran of the untied states navy and i say thanks and god bless you for doing this video. may you have fair winds and following seas. sailor8285 1982- Boot Camp RTC San Diego. 1982- HT "A" School Treasure Island Naval Station. 1982-1983 Class C-1 Welding School Naval Station San Diego. 1983-1985 HTFN USS Copeland FFG-25 (Westpac 1984)

  • I'm retired now, but this video makes me want to serve again, I love the posts and the memories. This is in my private collection when I see the "Commander and Chief"! God bless. protect all our servicemen! ET-1(SS) Monty Wynn.

  • I love this version of Eternal Father. My dad was in the US Navy in WW 2 serving in the Pacific theater. This is the song that I feel so bonded to him. He passed away in 1990 and the Navy Hymn makes me feel closer to him. Thanks for this post. So nice to hear.

  • God bless our Soldiers and God bless our Airmen, but may God especially bless the sailors that take to the unpredictable sea in our defense.

  • God bless the UnitedStatesNavy.

But first and always we are sailors.

No matter how mighty our vessel is, the ocean is bigger.

    We shall never forget that.

  • WOW! Thank you so much for posting this. As a Sailor (AM3 to be exact), I appreciate this! It brought a strong and proud tear to my eye to know that I have served w/ so many great "O"'s and enlisted. Thank you!

  • How hauntingly beautiful! the best rendition.

  • I just don't see how so many people can bash our military, after all they've done for this country.

  • Lol, Check your history ! Move to reconsider. The British wanted all you see here. Spain helped tremendously !

As a matter of fact, it is Spain, that helped with Naval Blockades and we utilized her currency at the time. Spain was a huge contributor to our country. to me England was very jealous and a greedy country........always will be.

  • Best if you dont come here then.We will not miss you.

  • god damn my dad said he's gonna play this song at my great grandfathers funeral im gonna freakin cry and im 16

  • ..And if it weren't for the British, we wouldn't be here. The U.S. Navy in particular shows a great amount of British influence. I'm in it, and proud of it, but there's nothing wrong with praising another.

  • God Bless the brave souls of our two nations. We might not see eye to eye, but like family, we are there for each other. USA, England and France forever!

  • might i make a correction, *we might not always see eye to eye on everything*. Need to phrase that better.

  • God Bless America!, God Save the Queen!, Vive La France!

  • BRILLIANT

  • Fly Navy!

    Semper Fi!

  • love the Navy, love being a Gunner's Mate.

  • Outstanding!

    Semper Fi!

  • I love this hymn, the plagal cadence at the end always gives me goosebumps. Good job on the video, i really enjoyed it.

God Blass America, and all those in the Armed forces that protect it and have protected it.

  • Outstanding!

  • Outstanding Tribute video to the Greatest Navy in the History of the world. I love the Navy joining it was the greatest decision I've made in my life.

  • Congratulations on a job well done. This is undoubtedly one of the finest videos on Youtube. Thank you for sharing it with us.

  • my son chris was a marine, who had the good luck to work with th Seals. he was later killed in ramadi by a sniper's bullet. it was the Seals who went out and avenged him. God truly bless all who fight for our beautifull country. this is a stirring video

  • Nice...

Navy will always be something special because one has to deal with the elements of the mighty ocean....weather its peace or war...

  • Thank you so much for posting this. It is simply beautiful. As a 20 year honorably retired United States Navy veteran I humbly salute all of the brave men and women who have served or are currently serving in the Armed Forces.

  • Have great respect for the armed servicess

  • Awesome post.........thanks. Though a marine myself, (and saying nice things about the navy is forbidden), the navy works hard and knows what they are doing....consumate professionals. Proud to have worked with them.

  • I salute all of you who serve. God bless.

  • That brought tears to my eyes. Thank you!

  • I am speechless. This is so beautiful it brings a tear to my eye. God bless all American sailors on the high seas.
