  • im not so sure a hare would be happy in hawii...

  • Hey Shug, what tarp is that ?

  • @amcstay It is a Speer Winter Tarp...no longer made. This place has similar...warbonnetoutdoorsdotcom

  • @NecessaryKnowledge Too true!

  • Your wife let's you sleep outside? We need to trade. Mine won't let me out of the bedroom . I need to test some of my eqyuipment.. Good idea,at least you can go inside if conitions call for it.

  • @kyletango She often encourages it)))))

  • Thats very nice thanks

  • @shippen2010 A late thank you.

  • Sorry Shug, won't let me LIKE, bloody computers

  • @MrHatManS Thanks for Liking!

  • @shugemery your vids don't usually let me give them a thumbs up.

  • Thanks for the reply Shug. Last question, can a UQ be to warm? Can't decide on a +5 F or a +30 F. Thanks

  • @TheMan4547 You can always vent a hot one by sliding it up towards your head or loosening the UQ.

  • I just got a blackbird warbonnett and cant wait for my first night. Couple of questions please. Why doesnt the UQ go the entire length of your body. Don't your feet get cold? And where is a good place for accessories to help organize inside the hammock? Thanks Also I understand it's either UQ or pad but not necessarily both. Is that right?

  • @TheMan4547 You can for sure combine UQ and a pad inside to boost your low temps.May lose a bit of comfort though.

  • Does it have to touch the hammock or is there a bit of a gap between them. Thanks excellent vids

  • @1LRLRG If it is a down UQ it should be snug up against your back...but not so tight as to compress the down.

  • hey shug what material is your DIY hammock. id like to try making my own

  • @TheRjourney It is 1.7 rip-stop nylon.

  • you are one crazy dude......but awesome vid!

  • Shug, I have to give you a very heartfelt thanks for all your wonderful videos. Without going into details, let me just say that there are times when I feel so hopeless and despairing; then I go to youtube and watch your videos and it helps me to go on. Your upbeat demeanor and your joy and happiness are so contagious, that I go from tears to laughter after watching your videos. So thank you. Not only do your videos entertain and teach, for this person, they are a lifesaver.

  • @earlymusicus It makes this stuff I do worthwhile!

    Shug

  • I'm sitting here, drinking a mug of hot Ovaltine, so the video is warmer to watch. LOL

  • @earlymusicus Ahhhhh.... Ovaltine! Classic.

  • your neighbors must wonder about you....luckily we dont

  • @occersay96 They ask me if my wife kicks me out of the house.

    Love the cold!

  • LOLOLOL fucking nut awesome videos shug

  • Im learning alot from watching your video's.. Now im interested in tarps, hammocks, and those underslung quilts are just a fantastic idea... 23-25lbs is impressive for gear, food, and water for three days, especially in those temps. I watch some of these "Bug Out Kit" video's on youtube and these guys are carrying 40 lbs and they have little useful gear to show for all the weight... Im learning how to lighten the load and still have the essentials from watching your videos.. awesome system.

  • @rainmechanic

Try it out .... I love the comfort!

  • Love the drumming at the end.

  • @DaveTPC Wish you were my neighbor.... Haaaa

  • Thank you for the very interesting information. I learn a lot from your videos and more than most other similar examples on the net. It took me a few videos to get used to your presentation style, but I've come to like that as an entertaining alternative to the monotonous presentation style of others. Well done and please keep going.

  • @JamesDGallagher

Thankee James .... I do know that I am a strong brew and not for everyone but I appreciate you hanging in there!

If I bore myself then other will be bored I fear.

    All secure in sector seven,

    Shug

  • @drummerthingx

My entire winter kit for this kind of weather fits into my ULA Catalyst backpack ..... which is 4600 cubic inches. That is food and all ...... my weight is around 23 to 25 pounds not counting what I am wearing ... snowshoes et al.

  • Go Shug! Love all yer videos. Dann from Bend Oregon. (pct) This year was the winter that never was, just like cold summer. we're gonna have a drought this summer.

  • So I've noticed on hammockforums and the like, a subject matter that people tend to stay clear of. When you're in -2F weather and you have to pee in the middle of the night, why not just take an empty bottle with you.

Some people find it disgusting, but I usually have an empty 32oz Gatorade bottle with me in the hammock. The wide mouth makes it easy to...well, you get the point.

It beats having to get up and face the cold, and it make a great hot water bottle by your feet afterward.

  • I just don't like it personally .... I am fidgity!!! That is just me ... I know lots of hammockers do like the ol' pee in the bottle routine.

Me .... i like getting up and seeing the pitch black of night or a moonlit forest or a shooting star. Feels so good to get back under the quilt.

  • hey shug, if ibeat on a drum like that at night i'm pretty sure i might hear gunfire from the neighbors. -5 deg. holy cow. my crowsnest is coming soon. gonna see how cold i can get with it. video coming when i do it.

  • Ohhhh ... enjoy that Crowsnest ... gonna be nice and warm-ly.

My neighbors just sick their dogs on me.....

  • Your hilarious! Thank you for the videos.

  • Thankee and Y'elcome....

  • Thanks for the video shug.

I came across your vidoes after doing some business with tinny @ MBD.

You've given me some ideas to try with my set up.

Say...what king of camera were you using? The picture and sound were great, thanks again.

  • That is cool! Glad you got something from my fun.

    I use a Canon PowerShot SD960 IS.

  • All that fleece on, for just -3? I'd wonder if something may be off in your setup? Maybe you got an air gap between your UQ and the hammock, letting in cold air?

And to the folks who have fears of animals coming around while they're in a hammock...the woods might not be the place to spend your time. Personally, I've never been bothered by anything bigger than a moth in my hammock.

  • Naw man .... no gaps ...I was good and warm but I do add a fleece top when I rise to pee and howl at the moon around 4AM. That way, when I awaken i am half dressed and ready for breakfast from the hammock...

Just wore longjohns, SmartWool top and a light fleece top sleeping. Just right for me. Warm on bottom ... moreso than top.

I do not know where you hang but i have had coyotes, skunks, possums, raccoons and deer investigate me hanging. I just eyeball 'em back ... to comfy to get out.

  • It's...."happier than Hons LuLu in Hawaii."

Ok, the drummer won ya another subscription my friend.

I'm considering hammock camping this year. I do alot of camping alone. I want to get into Stealth Camping.

Thanks for the video. 5 starz mate.

  • So much I thankee!

Try it ..... it really revitalized my backpacking spirit.

  • Could never sleep right or comfortably with my back all bent over in a hammack. But to each his/or her own. Video very entertaining though, thanks for the demonstration of new equipment.

  • Thankee .... but I lay really flat in these kind of hammocks. Lay on a diagonal so no sway back like a backyard hammock with spreader bars.

  • Ok, I live in Grand Forks and I got a question about this video...

    Why not a tent?

Why hang out in the open?

I do not understand this while concept of just hanging outside when you could be sleeping in a nice warm winter tent with all your stuff safe next to you and no danger of a dog or something walking right up to you?

If you like hanging to sleep, there has got to be a way to do that inside a tent too...

  • I have tents ... lots of them. I am in a tarp in this video ...just what I prefer.

When I camp I reckon I just leave worry behind and go with what I like. My friends like to be in their tents ..... that is their style and i am all for it. Me ... i like to see the woods and see that dog or Bigfoot coming if it happens along.

So hanging = tarp. i do have one with doors that close but there is always a wee bit of exposure.

Enjoy your style out there in the piney woods.

    Thankee.

    Shug

  • Seems like a lot of work to get to sleep.

From other videos I can understand the idea of a hammock in hot areas of the world.

The idea was to get off the ground and away from ants and things that bite that creep along the ground.

But the Minnesota in winter hammock idea seems like a lot of work to me.

However I could see an idea like some type of hammock/tent where you get the best of both worlds.

    Or a hammock/snow fort idea...

  • @AlanMolstad Much of the heat loss while sleeping is due to the cold ground. Cold air can be better than cold ground.

  • Shug you are the man I am not a winter man but live in the U.P. right on lake Superior and I know cold. My 3 ferrets and I are big time hammock fiends as well. Keep up the Videos your hillarious and make my day...

  • I am thankful that your ferrets and you watched and hammock.

I do thankee for your time.

  • Hey Shug, remember what the sun looks like? We aren't getting much here in Manitoba. Nice video, I do crazy stuff in my back yard too... don't tell the cops lol.... Was that creepy?

  • Crazy on Feller! Thanks....

  • There is enough here for a paper on the psychological effects of long Minnesota winters.

Can you do a "The Shining"?, would love to see your wife and kid get in on the video also.

  • The gray matter congeals and then gets slushy ..... Minnesota thing. Makes for a long cryogenic life though.

Forrest Gump meets Karl Childers in on the schedule now......

  • what a refreshing funny change , well done that man

  • I am too glad that you enjoyed it. Cheers and a cuppa.

    Shug

  • Shug, you are entertaining, inspirational, and slightly insane... thanks for the great video! I can't imagine sleeping outside in those conditions. Clearly, you know what you are doing.

  • I learn a trick or two everytime slumbering in the MN cold ..... thanks.

  • Merry Xmas shug.... How about as a video for the new year, you do a little Survivorman-esque trip into the back country for a few days with only a hammock and your wits to help you survive?

  • Same too you.

If I had any wits .... I might try.

    Would have to have coffee.......

    Thankee Sir

  • Shug Darn good review Merry Christmas and Happy New Year..

  • Happy hiking Holi-Daze to you as well Wingman. Thanks and have a cookie or cocoa.....

  • Shug, minus 2 is a pretty warm night for Minni sota......you need to head north of Duluth to get a real test on your sleep system......you know.....like the minus 20......head to Tetagouche State Park and have nice campout....then on your way home stop at Betty's Pies and enjoy. I look forward to viewing your next episode.....keep em comin.

    Ironboots and Wet Paws.

  • Hope to go up to the SHT and backpack soon..... love Betty's pies!!!! Good stuff.

    Thankee.

    Shug

  • Merry Christmas to you to Shuge...Thanks for all the great vids!

  • Merry right back atcha........

  • Excellent show, I must say.

What type of camera do you use? It works great!

I haven't figured out your zoomy effect at the beginning...pretty smooth work!

I'm in Missouri and like to stay inside by the woodstove and just live vicariously through your vids!

  • Thankee! I use a Canon Power Shot SD960 IS digital camera........ love it.

I use a canon Power Shot SD960 IS...

    Zoomy thing ... think string.

    I love Missouri sweet tea.

  • FAN-taaaas-tic!

I'm doing the same testing now and I know what you mean about the breath vapor icing. I've taken to wearing a fleece lined neoprene face mask. Works well enough, but you wake up with a warm but damp nose. Sorta like a doggie.

    stay warm,

    ~canoeski

  • I use a fleece mask and balaclava but detest my mouth covered ....... call me crazy!

  • Do you still wrap yourself with the topquilt like a sleeping bag?

  • Yes sir .... just tuck it around you. They make wider ones for ground sleeping but a hammock keeps it right around me.

  • Thank you for the quick reply, I've been rolling into a "fart sack" down here in Florida, and lemme tell you getting into the hammock is a tricky slippery fall to the ground nylon adventure. I'll try an over under on the next outing.

  • Before I got a quilt I just used my sleeping bag like one. Just left the footbox zipped up a wee bit.

  • Thanks for another great Video. My kids are going to love it. I got the boys hammocks, mini atomics, and other assorted gear for Christmas. Still more things to get before our first trip in the early spring. Keep them coming!

  • You are a wonderful Santa!!!!! Good stuff....

  • I dig your Black Rock Gear hat! Looks very toasty! Great video, Shug. 120 miles south of you has been pretty chilly too. I would love to have your setup to test my fortitude. Best wishes for a peaceful holiday!

  • The hat is my warmest .. and comfortable.

    Happy to you....

  • Extreme Hammocking. Shug, you need your own show on Spike TV.

  • I hope you are a producer!!!!!!

    Thanks.

  • Very informative and Very entertaining as always. Have a very Merry Christmas. Keep that camera rolling !! Great Stuff !!

  • Got the camera fever ....

    Happy to you as well.

  • Hahaha I love how you say, "botux"

  • A good word indeed!

  • You had to write your name in the snow?

John F. Kennedy: Congratulations, how do you feel?

    Forrest Gump: I gotta pee.

John F. Kennedy: [turning to camera] I believe he said he had to go pee. Heh heh.

  • Fat Man at Bench: It was a bullet, wasn't it?

    Forrest Gump: A bullet?

Fat Man at Bench: That jumped up and bit you.

Forrest Gump: Oh, yes sir. Bit me right in the buttocks. They said it was a million dollar wound, but the army must keep that money 'cause I still haven't seen a nickel of that million dollars.

Forrest would like his buttocks as warm as he can get em, now too.

That's all I have to say about that.

  • Lyndon B. Johnson: [Putting medal on Forrest] America owes you a debt of gratitude, son. Now I understand you were wounded. Where were you hit?

    Forrest Gump: In the buttocks.

Lyndon B. Johnson: Oh that must be a sight.

    [Whispering to Forrest]

Lyndon B. Johnson: I'd like to see that.

[Forrest shows him; Johnson walks away embarrassed]

Lyndon B. Johnson: God damn, son.

  • Funny .... I was thinking of doing a FG video ... maybe Forrest Gump meets Karl Childers!

  • Wakey, wakey...hands off snakey. Brrrrr....-2 degrees in a hammock is more than I'd want to try. I do need to get some sort of underquilt for my HH Explorer though. Great video Shug. Merry Christmas!

  • Hope you get one !

    Merry to you as well....

  • wooo 43 here today on the gulf coast with nothing but rain....I would rather be there for a hangin than here right now.

  • Get out there .... freedom!!!!!!

  • good -5 cool i do -8

  • All-righty...... 'Preciate it.

  • another great video shug, its such a shame we cannot get that sort of kit over here.

  • Merry right back to ya'll. Must be cold up your way. Nothing wrong with the ground ... it is the woods that count!

    I was just testing.

  • Actually it's only -4c today...hehe! But very windy, like always :o(

It was -27c just yesterday! Go figure :o)

  • If we ever go to war with the Russians I am sure the war dept will be in touch with you.

  • Standing by .......

  • Looks warm enough for me! I'll have to do some winter hammocking now that I live in Minnesota. Still not sure where to go yet, but I'll figure something out soon.

  • Good on you..... practice firstto be sure your system performs as you want. Always colder in the "real" piney woods here in MN.

Afton State Park is a good trial spot if you live in the Twins....

  • yeah I got 2 questions for you,

    1. Are you nuts, 2. Is there something wrong with you?

My work truck is freezing up leaving me with no way to work and here you are enjoying sleeping between two trees.

Always a pleasure to watch your videos. :)

  • 1) I am little!

    2) Actually a tree and a fence post ... warmer that way! Haaaaa.

    Thankee Sir.
