On the first trick all he does is just lie to them. He puts red on top of one stack and black on the other with the stacks stacked straight. Then when he tells them to lift their hand he grabs the stack and just says "ya these are the red cards." Then turns the cards over fast enough so they can't see them. It's all just social engineering
@countsmyth0:34 is first deception. they are not aligned properly. one black and one red has been put over eachother sort of. when he gathers them together they switch places.. he does plenty of these "off-beat" sleights. Saying something with a loud and clear voice, leaning forward and spreading the cards out, then as he reclines and speaks in a softer tone they look him in the eyes and miss the sleights.
@ ISteppedOnATurd - if you pause it at 1:33 you see a 7 of diamonds, at 1:34 you see a 6 of hearts, and at 1:35 you see a 9 of hearts. obviously you didn't watch the trick as closely as you thought.
Or, maybe I do know how the trick is done and I was simply exaggerating. You're right though, you clever dog you, he doesn't show them the same card four times, but he doesn't show them three either. He has two reds and two blacks and simply alternates dealing off the bottom and on top to make his TWO red cards look like four. And look at their faces! They're barely even paying attention anyway! I'm not saying the trick is poorly performed, merely that it's way too simple and easy to figure out.
The only reason this trick seems so amazing is because of the bad video quality makes it hard to see the cards. If anyone was actually really there, they could tell right away what he was doing. The people he's performing too are either complete idiots who aren't paying attention at all or actors; that's all there is to it.
Why? Because I think that you should notice when someone shows you the same card four times insisting that it's four different cards? Don't get me wrong, I like Derren Brown, but this is a ridiculously simple trick and not hard to figure out at all. I take back the actors thing, they're probably not actors, just really unobservant people. I'm sure anyone who was really watching closely would have seen right away what he was doing.
I am a magician and I can assure you the spectators were completely amazed. They had had really no idea what was happening. If you were there it would be the same for you.
And it's easy to comment like that when you are watching a video which you can view over and over again.
What does you being a magician have to do with this video? Nothing. I don't want your assurances. I'm sure they were amazed, but they were also barely paying attention and clearly knew nothing about magic. The trick is very simple, why is everyone so upset by me saying this? It's a very simple trick. That's all there is to it.
yea right...you make a fool of yourself buddy, bottom dealing is something that even the best cardmens in the world constantly improve. its NOT a simple sleight.
Bottom dealing is simple to understand. I repeat: I never said the trick was easy to perform. Just easy to understand. If you can't figure out OBVIOUS bottom dealing, where the magician shows you the same two cards twice each, then I'm sorry to say it but you're either an idiot, or you're just not paying attention. There's no amazing tricks in this magic, just simple bottom dealing. Everyone's attacking me like I criticized his performance, which I never did. I merely said it's a simple trick.
ok.its a misunderstanding then...you meant simple to UNDERSTAND.
but which card magic effect isn't really easy to UNDERSTAND if you know how it s done. i ve never really came across any magic effect that is really complicated and hard to understand. i m not saying hard to figure our,but hard to understand
well anyway,its all good.
its a good ,simple trick (like most good tricks) but not that easy to perform convincingly
I haven't watch the video in a while but what he does though is simply alternate bottom dealing when he reveals the cards, to make it appear that there are four reds, when really there are only two. He hides the black cards by flipping over reds from the bottom and then putting down black cards. Again, I'm not saying it's easy to perform, as it does require some slights, but it's not a "complicated" trick to understand. If you just watch the cards closely it's pretty easy to follow.
Come on, I can't be the only one that saw what he did. He didn't mix or unmix them, they were always the same cards, he simply moved them so fast(and turned them face down) so they were convinced by his words. It may not be amazing magic, but it's excellent showmanship, which is what he is, not a magician.
I doubt this is it but wouldnt the easiest way to do this trick least partially, two seperate sets of each colour, so he never makes them intertwine or untwine, he just switched between a set that is anda set that isnt? still no idea how hed do it tho :)
True. Any real lover of magic knows that they are being tricked, but doesn't care. The ability to do magic is an amazing talent, and when you know the secret, a part of it is lost.
i sorta have an idea how he did it. there's probably a technique that he uses when his "showing" the cards (each one has a seperate flip). i dont know how, but that's probably where it is. he manages to put down a different card than he shows
Funny to see Derren Brown doing a trick as simple as that :) I mean, it's Derren Brown, shouldn't he do something that makes you scratch your head for weeks until you finally give up?
and because it was originally VHS, and because it was Derren's debut.
The reason why he made the cassette is because it is too simple for him, now he went on to psychological disguised tricks, and this is a way for him to pay a tribute to how he started with magic.
but how does he manage to get them all intertwined again at the end after the lady got to chose the five cards she wanted? she could've chosen any combo. of cards but even with him using sleight of hand how does he manage to have them all intertwined again at the end?
The DVD is called "The Devil's Picture Book" and is available from his website.
He doesn't teach his hypnosis techniques because he is a not a hypnosis teacher.
There is a book called "Reality is Plastic" by Anthony Jacquin which teaches all different IMPROMPTU hypnosis techniques, including hand shake inductions etc. Google search it.
This isn't an insult, but anyone who has studied magic long enough to be able to cope with the skill level required for the DVD, would have come across him a long time ago.
The cards never actually unmix themselves. Notice how he only shows one card at a time as he reveals them and then puts them face down. He is using sleight of hand to show the same card 4 times to make them believe that all the red cards are there and puts the others down on the table face down. The opposite applies when he reveals the other hand. It's a very good and very convincing trick though and extremely well performed by Derren.
there are no fake cards used you can find the secret on the dvd the devils picturebook that can only be bought on his in a password protected area i've got it and the dvd is very advanced magic
Don't worry bud i hate it when i've been shown up and proved wrong by someone too. I once tried to argue a point with this guy and he totally made me look like a pathetic stupid bitch. i mean not as bad as what 'mrwhite' did to you but it was still pretty embarrassing. i don't argue with anyone anymore, i think people with our brain capacity should stick to smiling and nodding ;)
actually thats only half correct. density only affects which substance will be on the top and which will be on the bottom.
oil and water separate because oil is a nonpolar substance and water is a polar substance. without an emulsifying agent (such as soap) oil is immiscible in water.
methord looks to be a false count he appears to show a card then count the bottom one down and re show the cards giving the impression they are all the same colour
the effect and method here was devised by j sadowitz and published in the crimp years ago. I granted Derren permission to put it in his competition act at the I.M. convention and on his DVD, because then, I had respect for him. His only "contribution" is to elongate the effect/method into two or three phases. cheers, jerry
this method for oil and water, i.e. using selective b.d. from a face up packet, was devised by j. sadowitz and first published in The Crimp years ago. It has its roots in work by Peter Kane and Charlie Miller.I gave Derren permission to put it in his close up act for the I.M competition some years ago, and to put it on his dvd. This was granted in both cases because then, I had respect for him. All Derren has done is to elongate the effect and method into a two or three phase routine. cheers.
no edites an no cards up the sleeve the video this is taken from is called the devils picturebook its onli available thru dbs site but in it he explains exactli how its done
Well I'm no magician, so I'm free to speculate, unlike the guys protecting trade secrets (Which I respect).
First thing I notice, is he keeps all the cards to emself, no one else is allowed to touch them (only to pick them out in the end).
He also has a peculiar way of putting the cards on the table. Knowing Derren this could just be the misdirection and the trick being somewhere else completely, but this is what I notice.
it is called oil and water because when you mix oil and water they separate the oil floats at the top so the blacks represent oil and the reds represent water
In this trick there are no camera tricks, no cards hidden up sleeves, no short cards and it is done with an ordinary standard deck. Derren also gives credit to Sadowitz for this trick, and does state this is just his own version, but dislikes performing this trick.
I know how this trick is done, but I'm not going to blab it to the whole world on You Tube, however with a little imagination you can find out the full method for this effect.
hehe. I've been doing this trick for so long it sort of tickles me to see people's reactions to it. Especially magicians. They get fooled by this trick since it uses no gimmicks. I had a great time showing this trick to my uncle who is a professional magician. He had his own version of Oil and Water. Then I performed THIS one for him. haha! Great to see a magician stumped.
I'm stumped. Where can i find the book or publication? Right now i'm reading 'Corinda's 13 Steps to Mentalism' but i would love some direction in tracking this one down.
Actually guys, this has no camera tricks involved (even though this clip MAY have been edited). This trick is completely impromptu. Just need a deck of cards.
I see what you mean it looks like the cards move a bit towards Derren. That could be a camera trick or it could be when you place a card down on a flat surface fairly fast a small amount of air gets traped underneath it and when that air gets compressed it seaks a way out and will make the cards move a litte.
If you look closely the cards Derren puts down don't move at but the cards ther other guy puts down does move. Those why I think it was just air and not a camera trick. Cheers.
yes i do now how this works... how would i be able to talk about the trick if i didnt... this is all sleight of hand.. it can be done with any ordinary deck.... and tbh it really isnt that hard.... just takes a little practice thats all....
Your scepticism is pathetic. Whilst you all know there is practice and technique behind every trick that Derren Brown performs, you are treating this as if it is true magic; and that you are a 6 year old sat before a paid magician at your birthday party. Derren Brown openly admits that he uses a combination of Suggestion, Mis-Direction, Slight Of Hand and Showmanship. So why be so un-necessarily sceptical?
Yeah anyone who says they can see his sleight in this clip is lying. I have performed this trick for a few months now without watching this clip and even though i know exactly how he's doing it, not even i can notice it.
are know how derren's trick works? or you know how oil and water works? Cause Derren's version is NOT the normal version of oil and water. I know how the normal one works too and I have no idea how derren's version works, but i want to know very badly

For sure, of course :) But have you ever tried to learn a comparable trick to such a level of great performance? Takes a damn while.

I wonder if it has anything to do with the way he drew the cards out, specifically placing them and the way he flipped them down?

maybe he has the cards up his sleeve?
birthmarkslaya26 3 years ago
I think it's more likely that he switches the cards when he palms them, after taking them out from under the guy's hands!

at about 1:32 the second card is black and he only briefly shows it, they just follow his lead.. for example like when he is at the dog tracks

He tricks them into seeing what he wants them to see.
The cards are always intertwined...he just makes the blacks appear black through suggestion.

No more daytime TV for you O.o
Buy the Devils Picturebook; I'd recommend it if you're interested in learning how to do this (amongst more of Derren's wonderful work).
callumevans324 3 years ago
HOW the hell does he do that ???
xXJess13Xx 3 years ago
OMG When he put the cards under his hand they were face up
When he moved his hand a little you can see that they have been fliped over.!!

methord looks to be a false count he appears to show a card then count the bottom one down and re show the cards giving the impression they are all the same colour

Looks like a bottom deal to me.

the effect and method here was devised by j sadowitz and published in the crimp years ago.

All Derren has done is to elongate the effect and method into a two or three phase routine. cheers.

So someone else you dislike, Jerry, for being more talented, more popular and more successful than you?

no edites an no cards up the sleeve the video this is taken from is called the devils picturebook its onli available thru dbs site but in it he explains exactli how its done
ajphillips666 4 years ago 2
This is done by doubling certain cards that appear to the people watching the trick to be single cards.
Will1471987 4 years ago
Well I'm no magician, so I'm free to speculate, unlike the guys protecting trade secrets (Which I respect).
First thing I notice, is he keeps all the cards to emself, no one else is allowed to touch them (only to pick them out in the end).
He also has a peculiar way of putting the cards on the table. Knowing Derren this could just be the misdirection and the trick being somewhere else completely, but this is what I notice.

i dont get it why is it called oil and water
sullyg07 4 years ago
well I guess, just as oil and water will seperate from each other so did the black and red cards
jayweh 4 years ago
ohhhh... I get it now cool thanks
sullyg07 4 years ago
it is called oil and water because when you mix oil and water they separate the oil floats at the top so the blacks represent oil and the reds represent water

Let's just put some rumours to rest....

Then I performed THIS one for him. haha! Great to see a magician stumped.
pdilla 4 years ago
Yeah I fully agree! I've not practised for a while but I might try and master it by xmas to amaze some of the younger folks on xmas day.

I'm stumped. Where can i find the book or publication? Right now i'm reading 'Corinda's 13 Steps to Mentalism' but i would love some direction in tracking this one down.
fknugly222 4 years ago
Sadowitz? Where can i find his work? A particular book? He displays it as 'mentalism' but being a magician that could be sleighted all the way.
fknugly222 4 years ago
Actually guys, this has no camera tricks involved (even though this clip MAY have been edited). This trick is completely impromptu. Just need a deck of cards.
pdilla 4 years ago
I see what you mean it looks like the cards move a bit towards Derren. That could be a camera trick or it could be when you place a card down on a flat surface fairly fast a small amount of air gets traped underneath it and when that air gets compressed it seaks a way out and will make the cards move a litte.
If you look closely the cards Derren puts down don't move at but the cards ther other guy puts down does move. Those why I think it was just air and not a camera trick. Cheers.

wow he moves really fast

Brilliant, however, think if you could discover someone's telephone number, by looking at their eye movement!!

So why be so un-necessarily sceptical?
lewismaker07 4 years ago
Yeah anyone who says they can see his sleight in this clip is lying. I have performed this trick for a few months now without watching this clip and even though i know exactly how he's doing it, not even i can notice it.
FIREHOUSEFILMS 4 years ago
are know how derren's trick works? or you know how oil and water works? Cause Derren's version is NOT the normal version of oil and water. I know how the normal one works too and I have no idea how derren's version works, but i want to know very badly
