IIRC, they were supposedly from 'back home,' Granny was feeling homesick and staying in the cabin, and they decided to surprise her with some Flatt and Scruggs music to cheer her up.
But I heard they were originally reluctant to support that show because they suspected it might promote a negative image of "hillbillies". In other sequences of them I have seen on this show, they dress more formally. Here, they would appear to be risking the negative stereotype fo "hillbillies" with the hokey hats and without their usual ties. The context of the scene might make it different, however.
